ALUMNI It was while needing to access some information from a secondary college’s website recently that I came across what I thought was a nice idea. They had a specific page to highlight the achievements of former students spanning a range of industries, occupations and pastimes. Whilst we do have knowledge of the achievements of ex-students who have gone on to win Olympic Gold Medals, become airline pilots or have played numerous games for AFL teams we don’t know everything and wondered whether our school community could email in the achievements of the Viewbank alumni that you may have knowledge of. Please send an email to viewbank.ps@education.vic.gov.au if you know of someone who has gone on to bigger and better things and I will endeavour to ‘populate’ this page in upcoming weeks and months.
AUSLAN INFORMATION SESSIONS As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, we are running two ‘Introduction To AUSLAN’ sessions in the last week of term. The sessions will be run by Max from the Expression Australia Auslan Team and will run for 60 minutes. Both sessions will be identical and you can choose either Monday, September 12 or Thursday, September 16. The sessions will cover a brief intro to the language, community and culture, followed by fingerspelling, greetings, etc. The sessions will commence at 7pm and the meeting link is below. Would you mind emailing the school at viewbank.ps@education.vic.gov.au to advise us that you will be attending so that we can give approximate numbers to Expression Australia.

WORKING BEE Many thanks to the generous families who came to our working bee on Sunday. Our Jilinga vegie patch set up is taking shape with two shipping containers soon to be moved in preparation for our gardening program in 2023.
BOOK WEEK What a wonderful week of celebrations was had this week with Book Week celebrated by all. I’m sure we have plenty of photos to share later in this newsletter, but the book parade, book swap and author visit were undoubted highlights along with the now traditional ‘Where’s Wally’ search. Thanks to the staff for organising such events and getting in the spirit of ‘bookery’ by dressing up in a themed fashion on Tuesday!!
MATHS LAND The second of our transition events for 2023 took place this week with Maths Land taking place on Wednesday. I’ll let the photos tell the story.
PLANNING FOR 2023 Many thanks to families who have finalised sibling enrolments for next year, and others for advising us at the office that they have plans to move schools and/or states in 2023. That information is all very helpful as we plan ahead for next year. Term 4 starts with a request for grade/class considerations for next year from parents, and then the whole cycle of class ‘creation’, transition, staffing appointments and so on commences. Always a busy time.
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE DAY A reminder that on Monday, August 29, there will be NO classes for students to enable staff to undertake the tasks associated with their professional practice day as discussed in last week’s newsletter. OSHClub is facilitating a full day care program for any parents unable to make arrangements on that day. Please note that there will NOT be a common professional practice day in Term 4, but rather individual days with the hope that replacement staffing issues are less prevalent then.
I hope everyone has a pleasant weekend. This time next week will be the first day of spring!!
Kind regards,
Bill Kersing
Principal
Book Week Celebrations We have had a fabulous time this week celebrating Book Week. This year the theme was
‘Dreaming with eyes open..’ and our students certainly got totally involved on Tuesday for our Book Week parade. Thanks to all the parents who helped create the huge range of costumes, I hope the experience wasn’t too stressful. Today the students have enjoyed hearing from author-illustrator Dale Baker. There have also been many super sleuths out hunting for Wally around the school.
A big thank you to the Book Week committee – Louise, Rachel, Ellen for organising such a fun week.
Smile Squad six month fluoride varnish visit The Banyule Community Health Smile Squad team are returning to our school from the 10th -21st October 2022 to complete six-monthly fluoride varnish applications for those students who have provided consent. Fluoride varnish applications help make sure students have the best chance of preventing tooth decay, so we’re excited Smile Squad are coming back.
Consent for this fluoride varnish application was provided when students’ initial consent forms were returned. However, if anyone has changed their mind and do not wish to receive a fluoride varnish application, they can contact Banyule Community Health directly to let them know.
Please contact the Smile Squad team via: CONTACT PHONE NUMBER: 03 9450 2000
The Smile Squad team look forward to visiting soon.
Have a great week.

HELP NEEDED – SECOND HAND UNIFORM SALES We are seeking a parent volunteer to man the second-hand uniform sales at the school every Friday for half an hour at 8.45am to 9.15am. Please contact the office if you are able to help. Unfortunately, the Second Hand Uniform shop will be unable to open until we have a helper. Thank you
LATE ARRIVALS Please ensure children who arrive late go straight to the office to be marked as present. If the child does not come to the office for a late pass a text message will be sent to the parent/carer notifying that the child is absent. Late arrivals can only be time stamped at the office. When Parents/carers record the late arrival in Compass it provides us with the explanation but does not mark your child as present. When your child presents at the office, staff will record your child’s actual arrival time which updates the class roll.
WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK (WWCC) A ‘Working with Children Check’ is just one part of creating and maintaining a child-safe environment. It is a requirement that all parents/careers who wish to volunteer or participate in school activities have a current WWCC. https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/
Kind regards,
Lucy Addati
Business Manager
SWPBS Whole School Reward Day Our first ‘BIG’ school wide reward will be happening on Tuesday the 30th of August. We are having a movie day! The day includes allowing students to come in free dress, watching a G rated movie as well as being provided with an individualised box of popcorn to enjoy, thanks to Hoyts Northland. Please email the school if you do not wish for your child to receive popcorn.
The sessions will be 9:15 – 11 for the F – 2 students and 11:30 – 1:15 for the Year 3 – 6 students. We also ask that each student brings a pillow to school to sit on as well as a drink bottle. We look forward to sharing pictures and reflections on how the day went!

Parents and Friends will meet on Tuesday 30th August, at 7:30 pm in the staff room.
At this meeting, we will talk about our Father's Day Stall, Student Disco and other fundraising events for this year so please come and have a say. This is a great way to get involved in the school and share your great new ideas!
The students enjoy our special events and love seeing their parents and guardians involved in our school community.
We invite new members and new ideas. This committee is open to all parents and guardians, a warm welcome is extended to all.
New members are always welcome!!
This year’s Fathers' Day Stall will be held on Friday 2nd September, 2022. Children are asked to bring no more than $10.00 to purchase some quality goodies for their Dads, Grandparent, Uncle or Special person. Please remember to bring your money and a carry bag with you on the day.
For this to run smoothly Parent helpers are required to assist with the setup (Thursday afternoon), selling of gifts and packing up the stall which will run throughout the entire day…. so if you are available please contact Carol Seneca via email cazstar@optusnet.com.au (Mob: 0410 039 554)
School disco helpers needed. We are in search for some helpers to set up the bbq area from 3.30 to 4.30 the day of the disco. Kids can be there and have a play on the playground while the adults get it set up.
We are also in need for some BBQ helpers between 4.30-7.30 if anyone is free. They are in hour blocks or feel free to do a couple of hours, we will appreciate anything that you can do.
Parent helpers at the disco are required as well. The tasks include supervising all doors (so no students can leave), supervising the toilets and drink tap area, signing the students in and out when parents arrive to collect them as well as monitoring student behaviour. And just general looking out for students that may have a question or need some help with their dance moves!!!!
We have a few names down and we thank you for that but we still need more. Jump on the compass site and book in for a time that suits you.
Please note all parents must have a working with children check prior to the event and they need to be registered at the school office prior to the night.
