A day in the life of an MHA Community Safety Officer Jacob, Community Safety Officer

Making a difference to my mental health

In Summer 2022 I was requested to work with a tenant since MHA were struggling to complete major works to their property. The tenant suffers with serious mental health issues and displayed challenging behaviour, making access and an agreement of work difficult.

It was clear the tenant needed a continuity in personnel and someone who could manage their expectations and help co-ordinate the works. Building a positive relationship was absolutely key. After discussions about the tenant’s emotions and mental health and efforts to improve their wellbeing and regular engagement we were able to start to build a good rapport.

I was then able to liaise with the contractors to partially complete the works, but the relationship between the tenant and the contractor began to deteriorate, which further impacted on the health of the tenant. The tenant continued to engage well with me, and with their permission an alternative contractor was appointed to undertake the works.

The works were eventually completed in December 2022. The tenant’s home is their safe place and the tenant was ecstatic to have their home renovated and works completed.

The tenant messaged Jacob after the works had completed …

“It's over, done dusted, just a few things to touch up jobs here and there, and obviously the living room door is urgent now. but it's done really, and if it had not been for You and Terry, I wouldn't have made Xmas this year, I mean that, I was ready to check out, but finally, I have home I can be proud of again. a place I can finally ask my parents down for cuppa. Thanks Jacob and Terry, you are the first people in 21 years other professionals that have actually made a difference to me to my mental health, I can start dreaming of getting a job, not self-harming so much, hopefully eat better, get some new teeth...all this was lost, because my environment was killing me slowly, but you two sorted it out ...Thanks Both!
