THE IMPORTANCE OF READING
Reading is a skill that most of us take for granted, yet is one that is essential for being able to get on in life. As a child grows up, being able to read well not only enables them to discover new facts and to learn at school, but also opens them up to a world of new ideas, stories and opportunities.
Evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don’t, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”— Dr. Seuss
How can you help as a parent?
As a parent you can make a huge difference! Ensure that you are reading with your child as often as possible and recording in their reading diary. To develop fluency, it is important that children read their book multiple times; in turn increasing in confidence. As children become more fluent, their comprehension and understanding will also improve. Remember, home reads equal moving through the reading challenge.
- Bronze = 50 home reads
- Silver = 100 home reads
- Gold = 150 home reads

Success for All Phonics
Success for All Phonics gives children a daily phonics and reading lesson throughout EYFS to the end of Year 1. Following the phonics lesson, children will have online access to the book they have read in class (as well as a printed copy) so that they can continue to practise and eventually read the book fluently and automatically, no longer needing to sound the words out. For more information follow: https://fft.org.uk/phonics/
Lightning Squad
Tutoring with the Lightning Squad is a reading tutoring programme where pupils work in small groups with a tutor to improve their reading skills. Not all children will complete the Lightning Squad. If your child has been selected for this, you can help by accessing the books from home using your child's log in and practising reading/spelling the words on the parent progress reports. To access follow: https://tutoring.fft.org.uk/app/student
Nessy
Nessy Reading and Spelling was developed at the Bristol Dyslexia Centre by a team of specialists. At Parkside identified children from Year 3-6 will be provided with a Nessy account. Please encourage your child to access this at home regularly and work through the set targets. The programme begins with systematic synthetic phonics and, as literacy skills develop, students advance to instruction in spelling, morphology, vocabulary and comprehension.
Please contact school if you have any questions or require any further support with helping your child at home with their reading reading.

WORLD BOOK DAY
Just a reminder that World Book Day will be celebrated on Thursday 2nd March. Please click here for a reminder of the homework project we would like all of the children to take part in.
We can't wait to see their creations!
This year's theme will be 'fiction vs non-fiction'. We invite children and staff to choose their side! If you choose fiction, come to school dressed as a character from a fictional story book or wear the colour red. If you choose non-fiction, come to school dressed as something based on a non-fiction book or wearing the colour blue.
We will look across school at which genre is the most popular: will it be fiction or non-fiction?

SAFEGUARDING UPDATE
Listen up, Speak up
Half a million children suffer abuse and neglect a year in the UK. But there's something we can all do to change that. Listen up, Speak up
With NSPCC’s free 10-minute digital training, empowering every adult to know what to do if a child needs help, and where to go if you need support yourself.
https://www.nspcc.org.uk/support-us/listen-up-speak-up/
January saw the launch of the NSPCC’s latest campaign which aims to give adults practical advice on what to do if they are concerned about a child and offers training on how to sport and report abuse.
The last year has seen the NSPCC’s adult Helpline experience a 14% increase in the number of contacts about in-person sexual abuse. From April 2022 to March 2022, the Helpline spoke 8,347 times with adults expressing concerns about the issue compared to 7,338 the previous year. The Helpline’s child protection specialists have also taken thousands of contacts over the last year relating to other issues also: physical abuse, emotional abuse and about neglect. The extent of children at risk is likely to be more than half a million children in the UK experiencing abuse or neglect a year.
The NSPCC believe that abuse and neglect are preventable and that everyone can play their part in keeping children safe – the main reason for them launching Listen Up, Speak Up!
The campaign has been endorsed by Olympic cyclist, Sir Bradley Wiggins, who last year spoke out publicly about being groomed by his training coach when he was thirteen years old. Bradley kept his experiences hidden and struggled to cope, he said that if someone had spotted that he was suffering and had spoken out, he might have been able to get the help and support he needed much earlier.
The NSPCC’s long-term aim is to reach at least million people in communities and organisations across the UK to equip them with practical advice and confidence to know what to do and who to speak to if they’re concerned a child might be experiencing or is at risk of abuse or neglect and are encouraging every adult in the UK to take our 10-minute digital training.
