The long and short of it! Week 4 - Term 2a

Continuing our work on length this week we have measured ourselves. We thought about how to be accurate and where we would start from on our bodies. We used lots of great language, as well as ordering our bodies in height order. We made sure that we started in the same place every time and on everybody in the class. Problem solving continued outside with great team work as well as resilience.
The Jolly Postman returned with a problem. The Gingerbread man was worried! He was getting very frustrated that his feet kept on getting wet as he crossed the river. We examined lots of different materials that would be suitable to keep his feet dry. We tested them in the float tank, making predictions with our friends and using new vocabulary. We decided that some of the materials would be ideal for making boats. The next job is to decide which would be the most suitable, and also to learn about the different jobs that boats and ships carry out in the world.
1 more and 1 less and the Gingerbread man story maps, always learning and sharing ideas. The class really enjoyed following a set of pictorial instructions to draw a Gingerbread Man, they really enjoyed being as accurate as possible. We also played some roach games to support our listening and turn taking. Lots of opportunities to write and apply our phonics. We had a busy week with visitors, we had our height and weight measured as well as our eyes tested. We celebrated the Chinese lunar new year. This year it is the year of the snake, we watched a funny story about the animals having a race. We also tried different foods, we very much enjoyed sharing new foods and deciding if we liked them or not.
What a beautiful bright and fresh morning at Gibside. We really were keen to look at new things this week. Spring is almost here, we spotted snowdrops, small bulbs and winter roses. We spoke to the gardener, who told us all about the orchard and apple trees that were beginning to come into bud. This week we walked further and investigated the abandoned garden room, we could see for miles from the window spaces. We also realised that ground was not as hard as the previous week, this time we could turn the large cork screw in the park. We have noticed that our strength has increased, some of us can support ourselves to get on the swings and move our bodies to make ourselves move forwards and backwards. Looking forward to new adventures next week.
