Baylis Court School Newsletter Friday 27 May 2022

Caron Kipping to Baylis Court and gave a one hour talk on domestic abuse and her experience. She briefed us on who she was and what she did for example her work that she had been doing with a charity called DASH and how she helped other women in the same situation as her. She was very interactive and made it clear that questions were welcomed. The talk was very educational as it was informative of what the warning signs of abuse was and the red flags to look out for specifically: for example an abuser will isolate and take you away from friends and family to gain full accessibility and control over you. After she was done with her in depth talk of her experience with abuse, she explained her goals and what she wanted to achieve. After being a midwife for a long time she decided to become a spokesperson for domestic abuse and wanted to spread awareness on the problem. Continuing on we were asked if we had any questions; as this was a very serious topic we all had to take into consideration what we needed to say. Many people had questions such as “why did it take you so long to leave?” and “ Why did you keep giving him extra chances?” Caron elaborated on each question with her own perspective and what she didn’t note and what she wanted us as younger girls to note in our significant others. We were also advised not to make the same mistakes as her and to learn from her experience such as putting ourselves as priority and loving ourselves and treating ourselves as priority before putting someone else as one, to put our own needs over someone else’s. It was a very educational and informative experience and we were able to gain knowledge on an area that we were not familiar with as well as being able to learn what to do and how to approach relationships.

DANCE LESSONS

Year 7 have been learning dances from around the world. So far they have learnt Japanese, African, Flamenco, Bhangra and Ballet! They are then selecting their favourite styles to create a piece of choreography for their final assessment.

Issrah – “My favourite style was African because is it upbeat”.

Simran – “I liked ballet because I used to do it when I was younger.”

We are all so proud of Riya who started her Duke of Edinburgh Award with us here at Baylis, and was last week presented with her Gold Award at Buckingham Palace, where she joined in a garden party with the Earl of Wessex. Well done Riya!

On the 24th of May, a group of ambitious sixth formers visited Oxford university. For the majority of the visit, we were situated in Brasenose College where Dr Joe Organ gave us an insightful presentation on why we should consider applying to Oxford. The trip sought to address the societal myth that suggests Oxford and Cambridge are universities only suited for a small number of elites. After giving us an overview on the components of a compelling application to Oxford, Dr Organ sent us off with Brasenose students on a tour of the campus. The architecture was both magnificent and historical. Walking through the same mahogany halls that influential figures – such as David Cameron – strolled through, inspired us to set our sights high when applying to university.

Book Review

The Boy at the Back of the Class is an inspiring and sweet tale that highlights the importance of kindness and friendship in a world filled with injustice and discrimination. When Ahmet, a Syrian refugee who has recently moved to the UK, arrives in the narrator Alexa’s class, she is intrigued to learn more about her new classmate. Ahmet gradually makes friends and adjusts to his new environment and shares his displacement story from Syria to the UK and what happened to his family, from whom he’s been separated.

I would certainly recommend this book to someone as it brings light to the ongoing refugee crisis that many choose to ignore.
