Where did carrots come from?
- Carrots originated in modern day Iran and Afghanistan in the 10th century
- It then traveled to Spain and Northern Europe
- These carrots were purple and white, not orange!
- Carrots are a root vegetable that needs moist soil with a lot of phosphorus and potassium
- When you eat a carrot, you are eating the roots that are underground when the plant is growing
- it can take two full seasons for carrots to grow, but we usually pull them out of the ground after one. If they're left for the two seasons, they'll grow flowers!
In 2011. there were almost 35.7 metric tons of carrots grown in the world. This is almost 79,000 pounds!
Some insects like vegetable weevils and wireworms like munching on carrots while they're still growing beneath the soil
Indigenous people of the North Wakashan used carrots for medicine in the past
