Hello, my name is Emil Thompson and I've been tuning pianos for over 40 years. I originally trained in Edinburgh at Stevenson College in the mid 1980s. I have tuned hundreds of pianos over the years including everything from nine foot Steinway grands in stately homes and concert halls to tiny ships pianos in remote highland hunting lodges.
One of the great pleasures of my job is to see how even an old and neglected piano can bring so much music and joy into a home once it has been carefully tuned and restored to a playable condition.

Helpful Information. A standard tuning takes around one and a half hours and costs £80. I am happy to travel up to 2 hours from my base here in Fife but may charge a little extra for travel if you live more than one hour away. Any additional repairs can also be factored in when I see your piano. If you need me to raise the pitch of your instrument to concert pitch I can do this but it may take a couple of visits if your piano is well below concert A440. Please be aware that not all pianos can be raised safely back to concert pitch especially when they are old and unstable. Most of the time older pianos can be tuned at their current pitch and still sound nicely in tune with themselves.

I am delighted that Emil has brought my piano back to life! From the 1st email enquiry I sent, he always responded really promptly and I arranged an appointment quickly and easily. He clearly knows his stuff and had a very painful sounding baby grand, back sounding like a dream in no time at all. He's incredibly knowledgeable about his craft, he was punctual, efficient, and just a really warm and friendly guy! It is always a bit daunting booking a stranger off the Internet and inviting them into your home but Emil was a delight. He is excellent value and doesnt draw out the appointment time so he can charge extra or anything. I was really amazed at how quickly he had a piano which hadn't been tuned in at least 15 years, sounding perfect again. I had been looking for quite a few years for a tuner in this area and there never have been any local to me so when I found A440, I had very high hopes and he didn't disappoint. It is one of those trades that is a bit of a dying art with electronic pianos and such being around now so if you do find a good tuner, by all means keep a hold of them. I will definitely be keeping Emils details for any future problems now that I've found him!! My piano is very precious to me so it's not something I'd have trusted to just anyone! To have it back in playable condition really is a gift and I can't thank him enough for that.

We had recently bought an old piano which was completely out of tune…. So much so our son wouldn’t even attempt a tune. Emil painstakingly retuned her and brought her back to her original tuneful condition.
