This May edition of the Sustainable Futures Seminar Series focused on the wildly relevant and pressing issue of climate change. Chaired by Dr Stephen Lowe, Research Associate at the Henry Royce Institute, the event brought together two leading experts from The University of Manchester who each gave a presentation concerning the topic.
Dr Stephanie Sodero, Lecturer in Climate Change and Health at The University of Manchester, gave the first presentation of the event called ‘Under the Weather - Reimagining Mobility in the Climate Crisis’. The presentation was named after Dr Sodero’s book of the same name that was published earlier this year.
Anchored in two Atlantic Canadian hurricane case studies, Hurricane Juan in Mi'kma'ki/Nova Scotia in 2003 and Hurricane Igor in Ktaqmkuk/Newfoundland in 2010, the book explores the intersection between human mobility and severe weather. Through this ecological approach to mobility, Dr Sodero provided the event with an insightful and pertinent presentation that contributes to contemporary cultural, environmental and policy discussions.
Dr Sodero concluded their presentation by participating in a live Q&A session with attendees.
The second presentation of the seminar was given by Aristeidis Voliotis, Research Scientist at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science at The University of Manchester. Titled 'Understanding Air Pollution through Aerial, Ground-Based and Laboratory Observations', Voliotis presented findings from aerial, field and laboratory observations that add to our current understanding of air pollution. The presentation gave detailed analysis and evaluation of one of the most glaring causes of climate change worldwide.
A live Q&A session was also held for Voliotis’ presentation, which after being wrapped up signalled the end of a lively and engaging seminar.
