Athens Murals Athens, Ontario

On our way home from Kingston, it was such a nice day that we decided to take the secondary roads. At one point we found ourselves in Athens, a small town of about 2,000 people.

In the mid to late 1980's, before murals were popular, Athens painted many building sides with murals and created quite a tourist attraction for themselves. There are still murals in town, some original ones, some repainted, some new (and some painted over).

I've always had a "thing" about murals, having a catalog of many, many murals from our travels. My mother raved about the Athens murals, and I had been down to see them some 30 years ago.

Before finding ourselves in Athens though, driving through Lansdowne, a very small "village" and Lyndhurst, not quite as small, I spotted some hints of Athens "spillover".

A pano of the bottom half of a mural. It was on the side of abuilding with a narrow laneway.

A preserved mural on the side of a restaurant.

And inside the restaurant was another mural.....

A short visit in May 2023 produced two more murals, plus one work in progress. Last picture (taken through a reflecting window) is to be the finished product.
