Welcome, Dustdevil! ⬇️ Scroll Down ⬇️

Monday, Oct. 24, 2022

Dear University community,

  • Last Tuesday’s Maroon Madness was nothing short of awesome. It was clear that there’s a lot of Dustdevil spirit out there. Our thanks to Dustdevil Athletics and all the volunteers who helped to make this event so memorable. See a video highlight reel and relive the fun.
  • Also, last week, Congressman Henry Cuellar (’82) joined us to share the good news of TAMIU being awarded two grants totaling $3.5 million that target scientific research and increasing the number and quality of well-prepared Hispanic students completing TAMIU undergraduate degrees. TAMIU faculty members Dr. Ruvini U. Pathirana and Dr. Alfredo Ramirez, Jr. will lead these initiatives. Find out more.
  • Congratulations to our Student Government Association for organizing two campus Town Halls to introduce candidates for City Council and Mayoral races. I hope these events encourage your vote this year. To make that easier, early voting on campus will be held on the following dates.
  • On Saturday, over 300 of you really showed you can “Make a Difference” at North Central Park. From colorful murals to clean-up, to tree-planting, TAMIU students, faculty and staff joined together en masse to show the power of Dustdevil pride. Thanks to all for your service to our community! View our photo gallery here.
  • Tonight, TAMIU will return to its long-cherished tradition of celebrating its Diwali Festival in the Student Center Courtyard from 5 - 7 p.m. The word ‘Diwali’ is from Sanskrit and means “rows of lamps” to symbolize the victory of good over evil, inner light over spiritual darkness and knowledge over ignorance. It’s time to gather with loved ones and celebrate life...something we can all relate to.
  • The Festival is organized by TAMIU’s Office of International Engagement and will include a sampling of Indian cuisine. There will also be lights, a photobooth, music, henna tattoos and bindis, or colored stickers worn on the center of the forehead. Dr. Emily Vanchella, TAMIU visiting lecturer for the College of Arts and Sciences, department of Fine and Performing Arts, will play Indian music on the sitar. Join us and celebrate TAMIU’s global engagement.
  • On Thursday, Halloween Fest, long a signature event here at TAMIU, will return with some 35+ booths. This will be the first time in two years that we’ve been able to host this fun event, so get your “ghost” on and have a “goblin” good time. Here’s all the details.
  • You can continue the spooky fun at the special showing of the silent film classic, “Nosferatu,” which will be offered free of charge Saturday afternoon at 3. University organist Dr. Colin Campbell will recreate a true silent film mood with his improvised accompaniment on the Sharkey Corrigan Pipe Organ. It’ll be a treat, not a trick!
  • Have you ‘checked out’ the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library’s new addition to its research family? Meet Primo. That’s the name of the new Library Catalog and a powerful search tool accessed from the Killam Library homepage. Get the scoop with this short video tutorial or visit this blog link.
  • We continue to observe National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. We’re proud to be a part of this national observance focused on learning about the latest ways to protect the University, and our friends and families online. Find more information here.
  • Our TAMIU-SBDC will host a free webinar, “Cybersecurity 101 for Small Businesses,” that’s great for entrepreneurs. It’s on Friday, Oct. 28. To find out more and register, click here.
  • TAMIU will host the 2022 Walk to End Alzheimer’s here on campus Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022. Team TAMIU seeks additional members from the University community of students, faculty, administrators, staff, and alumni to join us in this worthy cause that impacts so many. Join Team TAMIU here.
  • COVID-19 is still a threat here, across our State, nation, and world. Recommended face coverings/masks, and rigorous hand-washing can help reduce your exposure risk. Learn more about free on-campus testing.

Let’s all have a great week, and Go Dustdevils!

- Pablo Arenaz, Ph.D., President
