Teachers of Quality Academy 6.0

On September 15, 2022, the Teachers of Quality Academy (TQA) program welcomed their sixth cohort of 34 scholars from ECU Health Physicians, ECU Health, and Eastern Radiology. TQA is led by Dr. Mary Catherine Turner, Department of Pediatrics, and is jointly sponsored by ECU Health with Vice President of Community Hospitals Lou Reida serving as the executive sponsor for the program. Jenna Garris, Office of Medical Education, has served as the Administrative Director since 2015 and is responsible for program operation and administration.

The program, which began in 2014, is a professional development program designed to provide health professions clinicians and educators with the skills necessary to practice, model and teach the new competencies of Health Systems Science: patient safety, quality improvement, systems thinking, population health and team-based care.

2022-2023 Cohort

Participants in TQA are competitively selected based on individual applications and their potential to become change agents in these competencies. TQA provides advanced training toward achieving a greater capacity to design and implement quality improvement activities and to apply these skills across the health system. Additional training in leadership of self, others, and leading change are included so participants can continue to advance the culture change needed to transform the delivery system.

The sixth iteration of the program is comprised of 12 half-day sessions alternating concepts of Health Systems Science and Leadership Development. The program also includes a new Wellness Thread woven into each learning session where participants engage in supplemental activities to further enhance the experience of life while at work. The concepts are taught in an authentic setting using an experiential design. By designing experiences that span the continuum of professional development in the context of clinical microsystems with other health care professionals, learning is augmented, and participants are better prepared to meet real-world challenges.

“TQA is a great example of ECU Health promoting the Quintuple aim for clinical leaders in the healthcare system. This is truly an interdisciplinary cohort from across the healthcare system. Our current scholars are building relationships with each other as they explore their own leadership style and implement QI projects in their clinical areas, with support from prior TQA graduates serving as small group coaches. Our TQA 6.0 scholars are well positioned to promote positive change as we move forward together as ECU Health!” - Dr. Mary Catherine Turner

Dr. Skip Cummings was awarded a contract by PCORI for a 5- year, $5.6M pragmatic clinical trial in patients with uncontrolled hypertension in partnership with UNC and numerous other health care partners across North Carolina.

ECU will lead the five-year randomized clinical trial aimed at improving blood pressure control in rural and urban patients using targeted home-based monitoring.

The strategy includes an ongoing at-home blood pressure monitoring portion of the study and a pro-active health care provider team to provide patient-centered blood pressure management.

“The intent is to study how well this new strategy for improving blood pressure control works in high-risk populations compared to usual care.” - Dr. Skip Cummings

Assistant Professor in Public Health Dr. Sinan Sousan was awarded a Fall 2022 Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (URCA) award to support student research in respiratory illnesses.

The research aims to determine the accuracy, precision, and calibration of a low-cost aerosol sensor (AirBeam) by comparing its data to a real-time reference aerosol monitor.

The Airbeam, if proven reliable after calibration, would be an economically friendlier option for aerosol monitoring.

The AirBeam and reference monitor will be evaluated at the intersection of Greenville Blvd and Charles Boulevard due to its proximity to a busy traffic intersection.

This research and data are important to those living with respiratory illnesses and will help affected populations make informed decisions about their health in their microenvironments.

Assistant Professor in Public Health, Dr. Rashmita Basu, achieved "Quality Matters" certification for her course MPH 6800, and she was awarded a "course buy out" Faculty Service and Reassignment Award award for spring 2023.

"There is a clear need to understand and improve health and economic outcomes impacted by the pandemic, especially among Black and Hispanic/Latino groups who experience significantly greater negative consequences than their White counterparts.

The overall goal of this project is to examine the impacts of the pandemic on health and economic well-being and if these impacts vary by race/ethnicity of study participants. We expect our findings will inform NC state policymakers regarding specific support services including economic and healthcare services for older adults, particularly for vulnerable populations.

If our anticipated findings targeting vulnerable older adults are fully implemented into policy actions, this will result in a direct positive effect on the health and economic well-being of more than 30% of NC residents aged 65 or older who are in minority groups, low-income groups, and/or who have a disability." - Dr. Rashmita Basu

DEI Efforts

in the Marcé of North American Perinatal Mental Health Society (MONA)

This symposium brought together five speakers from across MONA to detail efforts towards increasing DEI both within and outside of the society. Clinical Assistant Professor from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, Dr. Karlene Cunningham, discussed the importance of identifying strategies to increase inclusivity that fully center on marginalized groups and described how identifying who is missing from the conversation is the first step towards achieving this goal. Those who attended this symposium gained a greater understanding of strategies to increase DEI in the clinic, at the organization level as well as the national level.

"Just like us, bacteria are social organisms that live in complex communities. These bacterial communities, called biofilms, can have a major impact on human health outcomes. In a biofilm, bacteria are highly tolerant of antibiotic treatment and cause serious issues in the clinical setting." - Dr. Morgan Milton
