Principal's Message
Kia Ora Koutou
First up I want to thank you for your support in our drive to help others in our local and regional community. Your generosity has allowed us as a St Matthew’s whanau to assist in Tinui, and in the Hawkes Bay. We continue to find ways to give service so thank you for helping because every bit helps.
Now a few formalities.
Policies and Procedures
Our school has been working with SchoolDocs to create a website for our policies and procedures. We are excited to announce that the site will soon be live and available to our school community.
The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies, which have been well researched and align with the National Education and Learning Priorities. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc.
SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. Our school board has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on them before they are implemented. We will advise you when policies are up for review and how you can take part in the review.
We will soon invite you to visit the site.
Complaints to the school
Where appropriate, we try to deal with concerns and complaints informally in the first instance. If you would like to raise a concern with us, please follow the steps below. If you believe your concern cannot be resolved informally, it may be appropriate to make a formal complaint.

Boarding Note
No power… no dinner! On Tuesday night the power went out before dinner was cooked so the boarders were treated to fish and chips on the chapel lawn. It also just happened to be our first Boarders Chapel for the year, which was pancake making on homemade mini ovens- rather convenient timing with the power cut. Well done to this group of boarders who managed to make the best looking pancakes. Great teamwork girls.
On Thursday the Main House boarders visited Hampton House to watch the Year 12 and 13’s depart for the dessert Dance at Senior College. Thanks Miss McCoy for these gorgeous photos.

Year 7 & 8 Parent Information Evening
On Wednesday at 5.15pm a group of parents met with Doug, Georgie and Alison for an information meeting to explain the Year 7 / 8 Curriculum and school expectations. We went through the Curriculum and Student information booklets outlining what is offered and how the Year 7 / 8 year operates. Booklets were also sent out to the parents who were unable to attend.
While this was happening, the Year 7 / 8 students met up with the school Prefects at 3.30pm who had organized an afternoon of activities, a swim and a sausage sizzle. This was a great afternoon for the Prefects to get to know the younger girls and chat to them about their start at St Matthew’s. The afternoon finished with a sausage sizzle before the girls met up with their parents. The girls then took their parents down to look at their classrooms before departing for home.
Many thanks to our parents who were able to attend, hopefully we will me up with others at a later date.
St Matthew's Equestrian event
Another successful St Matthew's Equestrian event was held on Monday. Well done to all competitors and organisers.
Year 7 & 8 Camp
Last week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday the Year 7 / 8 Department went on their bi annual camp to El Rancho at Waikanae. We travelled by bus over to Waikanae stopping at Maidstone Park for lunch and a play on the new playground. We arrived at camp at 1.30pm, unpacked the bus and then started our first activities at 2pm. After completing three different activities it was time to move into our cabins and a short rest before dinner. After dinner we were given our phones for half an hour to call home or play some games. After we handed our phone back, we had some indoor games until supper time and then bedtime. One of the games was making a marshmallow tower with 25 wooden skewers and 25 marshmallows. We had to make the tallest tower we could and it had to stand up for a minute before collapsing. During the games there was a massive earthquake and we all scrambled under the tables that were around the room. When it had passed we all settled back to finish the games. Everyone was given a chocolate fish before bed for being very brave and supporting each other.
The next morning, we were up at 7.30am to get ready for breakfast. After breakfast we cleaned our rooms and prepared for the long day ahead. This day we were all going to do six different activities.
It rained most of the day but we were still able to complete them all. The activities finished at 5pm we had quick showers in time for dinner at 5.30pm. After dinner we had our phones for another half hour and then had another night of indoor activities. Everyone was quite tired after their big day so fell asleep very quickly. After breakfast on Friday, we packed up our cabins and put all our bags in the hall before taking a leisurely walk to the beach. The weather was fine, so we were able to have our sand sculpture competition. We worked in our cabin groups to create amazing sculptures. When the sculptures had been judged we walked back to the camp in time to have our lunch at camp before the bus arrived to take us back to Masterton.
The best sand sculpture was won by Cabin 2 and the tidiest Cabin was won by 5.
Thank you to Mr Davidson and Ms Goulding for organising the camp and thank you to Ms Glass, Mrs Hepburn, Ms Goldsworthy and Mrs Wasson for coming along to assist.
PE
Y8-9s didn't let the weather stop them practicing for next week's athletics today! All Pe classes had a go at our events for next week, indoor styles! Followed by a game of bench ball.
Perfect practice makes perfect and being the best we can be!
Friends of St Matthew's AGM

Community News and Events
It is with pleasure that St Matthews Collegiate is hosting an event for parents of toddlers to teens about Raising Body Confident Children on Thursday, 16 March at 7.30 pm.
Emma Wright is an internationally recognised expert on how to raise children to have a healthy relationship with food and their body. Having worked with hundreds of parents in her coaching practice and online programs, Emma has proven that conventional methods to prevent body image issues are flawed and offers a powerful new approach to those who are worried and frustrated.
In a world where many of our young people are bombarded with distorted images of perfection, Emma’s toolkit of proactive strategies is particularly relevant. This event is open to all, so please share with friends and families inside our Wairarapa Community.
At this event you'll learn how to:
- - nurture a positive relationship with food,
- - deal with sugar so they don't sneak it, or eat without being able to stop,
- - promote body diversity,
- - body-positive social media use & screen contracts,
- - what to say if your child says they hate their fat body,
- - support a child who has been 'body' bullied,
- - prevent eating disorders
When: Thursday 16 March, 7.30 pm–9 pm
Where: St Matthews School Auditorium, 33 Pownall Street
