This seminar session bought together two very different research topics: Video Games and Sustainability; Climate Change, Ukraine, Economics. The diverse range of research present at this one hour seminar, yet both with such a relevance to sustainability and Sustainable Futures justifies the work of Sustainable Futures to promote and celebrate interdisciplinary research across The University of Manchester and beyond. This seminar demonstrated how wide reaching the areas of sustainability research can be.
Dr Stephen Lowe, Research Associate at the Henry Royce Institute, was the chair of the event.
Professor Ricardo Climent, Interactive Music Composition at The University of Manchester, spoke first on "Video Games and Sustainability" in a collaboration project with Creative Media.
Professor Climent presented their Resourceful.World video game trailer (in Collaboration with Creative Media at the event. The game is still in development but is strongly informed by academic research and will function as a tool for public engagement in sustainability research, with a target audience of those age 10 to 25.
Professor Climent ended their segment by participating in a live Q&A session with the attendees.
Professor Mat Paterson, International Politics at The University of Manchester, spoke next on "Climate Change, Ukraine, Economy".
Professor Paterson's talk covered how the four following intersecting crises have impacted on climate action in their six chosen case study countries (UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Germany and India). The crises are as follows: COVID lockdowns; COVID recovery; natural gas-fuelled inflation; and Russian invasion of Ukraine. The findings presented in the talk were that there is no overall evidence of large-scale backtracking on climate action. There is, if anything, a modest increase in climate ambition across most countries analysed - with Japan being a major exception.
At the end of their presentation, Professor Paterson answered some questions from the attendees, joined by Dr James Jackson (Post-Doctorate Research Associate who worked alongside Professor Paterson on this research).
