It was simply down to a roll of the dice…
We had the final walk planned for today, but as we had a spare day up our sleeve we wanted to pick the best day for viewing the Dolomites from the largest European alpine plateau, The Alpe di Siusi. But both days had less than desirable weather forecasts, so we decided to stick to the original itinerary and go today!
Without knowing too much about what the day entailed, We were expecting to see the Dolomites up much closer and were bracing for disappointment as at breakfast Sam pulled up one of the live webcams that showed zero visibility through dense cloud cover high up on the Siusi plateau.
After a bus and then a cable car ride we were effectively at well over 2000m. Visibility wasn’t great but we commenced the 14km loop circuit that would take about 4hrs to complete.
Within the first hour we had our socks blown off! This was going to be a fitting finale to such a spectacular walk we had completed over the past week. The clouds lifted revealing the Dolomites and stayed mostly sunny until we had completed the loop before the clouds started to descend and the first spots of rain appeared. But we had witnessed the magic and we were happy with the decision to come up today!
Best day ever!
