Photography 2 Portfolio Sylvan Prey-Harbaugh

This course consisted of a lot of different and new techniques for me. I'm not usually someone who likes creating more artsy and abstract stuff but thats what this course demanded from me a lot of times. I learned how to create beauty and was able to apply that to my independent projects towards the end of the course. The independent projects I did was more photojournalism centered and mostly required me to leave my comfort zone.

PHILLY LOVE - I asked 24 people walking on the streets of Philadelphia to tell me about something they love while I took portraits of them. I had never done anything like this before and it taught me a lot, not just about photography but mostly about people.
SENIORITIS BALLS - The feeling/stages of senioritis expressed by a bocce ball that I tossed around and drew on in photoshop. I used color and focus to get across the feeling of disassociation from everyday life.
FIREFIGHTERS IN TRAINING - This is the coolest shoot personally that I've ever done. It gave me a newfound respect for what my brother and his friends do at the fire company.
HAVEN HEARTTHROB - Lightroom's new "denoise" tool is the reason these photos look as crisp as they do, without it they were really grainy. Haven heartthrob was a once in a lifetime experience and I'm happy I was able to get some flics of it.
FLOWER LAB - I love the colors in this photo and the floating flower. I like that though there's heavy backlight, the front of the flower is still clear and not too dark. With a lot of the flower lab photos, I turned up the texture and clarity to make the petals pop.
SHUTTER SPEED GHOSTS - I like how the subject has a faint trail behind them, an effect that we spent a good amount of time trying to get. The white sheet's varying opacity and smooth color contrast with the chaotic dark background.
TOY PHOTOGRAPHY - I like how the puppy's head is tilted slightly to the side. Something that I've been experimenting a lot with recently is the wider lens. The wide angle makes the hallway seem gigantic compared to the dog. I also like how the selective focus blurs the lights.
TOY PHOTOGRAPHY - Dr. Seuss's book, Yertle the Turtle, inspired my thinking behind this. I like how the selective focus blurs out the rest of the dinosaurs. The wide angle adds to the power dynamic between the high-up dino and those below.
FREEZING TIME - The water looks smooth on the hands, and the droplets are floating in midair and splashing into other parts of the arm. I turned down the saturation of every color but the yellow and green to selectively color the photo. It also made it so that the background really contrasts with the lightness of the fruit and hands.
SINGING VALENTINES - These are my favorite shots color-wise I’ve ever taken. It was my first time using a full-frame and now I can't go back.
AT THE HALF-PIPE - I took my DSLR on a bike ride to the park. At the pump track, I had conversations with the riders and got to observe how they ride in a way that I normally can't when I'm riding beside them.
OFF THE WALL - My brother has always loved to do flips so I asked him to do some so I could capture photos for a weekly practice. I love how majestic he looks in the frozen action.
SOMETHING FROM NOTHING - I like how these photos look otherworldly. To create one of these textures, I repeatedly poked the tip of a pair of scissors through the paper.
SWINGING INTO ACTION -My brother and his friends love to do parkour on the playground sets. This photo was catpured using a wider lens and a low angle.
SPRINGIES - The assignment was to capture photos the represented the season of spring around our school. I love the texture I was able to get in these.
HOME BASE - My Nana's house has been the most constant place in my life. Her kitchen hasn't changed since I was born.
ON THE WAY - My mom's car is somewhere my sister and I have spent a lot of time. These photos are meant to point out the little things you notice when you've been bored in the car for a long time.
THORNY, PURPLE, ROCKET - The subject of the left photo is a skinny rocket I found on the ground then positioned through a chainlink fence. I love the shallow depth of field in this photo and how the sunlight highlights one side of the rocket.
EYE EYE CAPTAIN - I love this photo because of the amount of detail you can see in it. You can see the many colors in her eye, the texture of her skin, and her windswept hair so clearly and vibrantly.
BLOWN AWAY - Georgia attempts to blow bubbles on a sunny day during photo 2. I like how you can see the different natural tones in her hair due to the extreme sunlight.
