REstoring power safely
We do our best to avoid power outages, but there’s no way around it; they occasionally happen. So when the power goes out, how do Central Georgia EMC (CGEMC) crews know where to start working?
When the lights go out, and it’s safe for our crews to begin the restoration process, they start by repairing power lines and equipment that will restore power to the greatest number of people in the shortest time possible.
This process typically begins with repairs to larger main distribution lines that serve a greater number of homes and businesses. Next, crews work on the lines that deliver power to transformers. Finally, individual service lines that run between the transformer and home are repaired.
A proactive approach to maintenance helps minimize the chance of prolonged outages. This is why you see CGEMC contractors trimming trees and clearing vegetation near power lines. In addition to managing vegetation, we regularly inspect utility poles, power lines, and other critical equipment to maintain a more reliable system.
Mother Nature can be unpredictable, but as a member of CGEMC, you can feel confident knowing we are standing by, ready to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. If you do experience an outage, you can report it using our mobile app, on our website at www.cgemc.com, or by calling 770-775-7857.

Notice of capital credit assignments
Central Georgia EMC (CGEMC) announces that the capital credit assignment for 2021 is 3.32%. In an electric cooperative structure, like CGEMC, each dollar paid in excess of the cost of providing service is an investment in CGEMC by its customer-owners.
At the end of the year, after all expenses are paid, any remaining funds are assigned to customer-owners’ accounts. CGEMC’s margins are used as capital until they can be returned through a general refund without impairing the cooperative’s financial condition.
Your capital credit assignment is calculated by multiplying your total electric bill for the year, minus the sales tax and any miscellaneous charges times the 3.32%.
- If your annual bill totaled: $500 x .0332, your assignment is: $16.60
- If your annual bill totaled: $1,000 x .0332, your assignment is: $33.20
- If your annual bill totaled: $1,500 x .0332, your assignment is: $49.80
- If your annual bill totaled: $2,000 x .0332, your assignment is: $66.40
Note: Assignments do not include Central Georgia EMC large power accounts.

Understanding your cGEMC bill
Central Georgia EMC (CGEMC) wants to help you understand how your bill is calculated. The three main components of a CGEMC bill that nearly all members have in common are Usage, Wholesale Power Cost Adjustment, and Taxes. The Usage category is comprised of the applicable monthly service charge (to cover account administration, power distribution, capacity, and other related expenses), plus the appropriate charge per kilowatt-hour of energy.
The Wholesale Power Cost Adjustment is designed to recover excess costs associated with generation fuel and ultimately the cost of electricity delivered to CGEMC members. CGEMC delivers energy that is generated using a variety of fuel types. The price of some of these fuels is usually low and consistent, while the remainder varies in cost (similar to other commodities). The Wholesale Power Cost Adjustment listed on your bill may vary in response to power cost fluctuations.
No one enjoys paying taxes, but they are necessary in today's world. Energy sales are taxed at the local and state levels. Local tax rates vary by the county in which electric service is delivered, while the current state tax rate on electricity sales is 4%. Taxes are itemized on your CGEMC bill by type.
In addition to the components described above, your CGEMC bill may have line items for other products or services like yard lights, surge protection, or participation in Operation Round Up. If you ever have questions about your CGEMC bill, our friendly customer service team is available to serve as your trusted energy adviser.

Give Your smart home the access it deserves
You are all set to turn your house into a smart home, complete with smart locks, lighting, speakers, cameras, and other features. But, before you buy anything, make sure the most crucial component of your smart home is up to the task.
The internet powers a smart home, and without a robust, fast Wi-Fi connection, everything might come to a standstill. Here are a few simple changes that will allow you to use your smart bulbs and watch Netflix at the same time.
- Check your equipment. Modern, up-to-date routers and modems are essential in the smart home because newer equipment can handle multiple devices and support faster speeds.
- Give your smart devices a dedicated network. Most routers allow you to split your incoming Wi-Fi into more than one channel. Fiber services, like Conexon Connect, let you set up the same controls through your online account. By allocating a separate amount of the bandwidth to your smart home devices, you minimize lagging caused by activities such as streaming or working from home.
- Check to see that your router is in the correct location. Interference is your biggest enemy when it comes to a strong Wi-Fi connection, and if that signal needs to penetrate solid objects like walls, books, or wood, will weaken it.
