Congratulations to Patty Rudd, Special Education teacher and Erin Grubb, Language Arts teacher at West Oak Middle School. Mrs. Rudd and Ms. Grubb was recently nominated and presented with a Diamond Award at the November 16th and December 14th Board of Education meetings.

Mundelein Coat Drive

D76 successfully closed out our Mundelein Coat Drive on Friday, 11/19 at The Chapel where we were able to provide up to 400 free coats to families in our district with D73, 75 & 120 thanks to Operation Warm, our Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (BPAC) members and our D76 PTO for providing hats, gloves and scarves.

Now, we have our 2021 Holiday Gift Drive where we have D76 identified families who would benefit from this event. If you would like to "adopt" a family, please click here: 2021 Holiday Gift Drive to view the kids' wish lists, drop-off information and dates.

The event is scheduled to take place on Friday, 12/17 from 5-7 PM at The Chapel parking lot. Our families are genuinely thankful for this community opportunity. We thank all of our staff and community as well for your support in going above and beyond for our students.

Teaching and Learning

This December students in 1st - 8th grades will be taking the Star Benchmark Assessment in reading and math. These assessments will allow teachers to evaluate student growth and academic attainment within the first four months of this school year. The Star Assessment results will also be shared with both students and parents who will be able to gauge performance against grade level standards and set goals for the Spring Star Assessment. If you have any questions related to your student’s Star reading and/or math assessment scores please reach out to your student’s teacher.

Facilities

Our Food Services Department held a student tasting event at Diamond Lake School providing a variety of food options for students to sample. Students shared their feedback on each new meal option to assist in the development of expanding meal options in the upcoming months.

Finance

2021 Tentative Tax Levy

At their December 14th Meeting, the Board of Education approved the 2021 Tax Levy. The 2021 tax levy is $15,431,500 (exclusive of Bond and Interest). The increase is based on 1.4% for existing property (the 2020 CPI) and an additional 14% to capture new construction and remodeling.

Instructional Technology & Communications

During the week of December 6th - 10th students at Diamond Lake District 76 participated in the “Hour of Code” yearly event. The Hour of Code began as a one-hour coding challenge to give students a fun first introduction to computer science and has become a global learning event, celebration, and awareness event. Each grade level utilized various coding resources found on the Coding Dashboard and participated in various events exploring the world of Computer Science while providing students with soft skills learning experiences of problem solving and perseverance.

Learning how to code doesn’t have to end in December. Students can access our free fun and engaging coding activities listed on the Code.org Coding Dashboard at any time.

STUDENT services

On December 8th and December 16th, Dr. Olsen, Mrs. Kazuk, Ms. Pentz and Ms. Harmon hosted two Parent Universities.

  • December 8th the presentation will focus on developing a collaborative and positive environment for completing homework at home.
  • December 16th the presentation will focus on building positive behavior supports at home.

Both of these presentations will provide a great opportunity to learn about positive strategies to support our students at home with behaviors, routines, and schedules. To attend please check out the District 76 Parent University webpage.

In December, Diamond Lake School held Operation Snowball events that had a theme of “What Makes You Different, Is What Makes You Beautiful”. All Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students had the opportunity to spend the day completing a variety of activities to celebrate our differences, including a presentation from GiGi’s Playhouse on Down Syndrome.
