S C I L ' s Travel Club April 2022 Virtual Christmas in Branson, Missouri - PART 3

Welcome back to SCIL's Travel Club Virtual Christmas in Branson Adventure - Part Three

PART ONE --- CHRISTMAS IN BRANSON

Recap ~ Day One

Let's go over what we've seen so far. We flew into Branson, Missouri with our Trips Inc. group leaders, Danell, Ed, Amy, and David!

Trip Inc. Travel Agency
Then we checked into the rustic luxury of the Big Cedar Lodge...
Big Cedar Lodge Site Map
We stayed in the Valley View and the Falls Lodge both located next to each other up on the ridge.

Uncle Buck's Fish Bowl & Grill

After settling in at our hotel, we went to Fun Mountain to have dinner and go bowling at the under-the-sea themed restaurant, Uncle Buck's Fish Bowl and Grill.

Day Two

Silver Dollar City

We spent the entire day at Silver Dollar City! A 100-acre theme park that has the look and feel of an 1880s Ozarks mountain village. It offers rides and attractions, historical buildings, heritage craft demonstrationslive entertainment, and so many food options it made our heads spin!
We were fortunate to be at Silver Dollar City during their 'An Old Time Christmas' holiday event. We saw the musical production of the Dicken's Christmas Carol, we drank hot mugs of Wassail, we saw the eighty-foot Christmas tree, we watched the Christmas Light Parade, we listened to Victorian Christmas carolers, and we were surrounded by 6.5 million lights and endless Christmas decorations!
After a full day of fun at Silver Dollar City, we waved goodbye to Santa and went back to Big Cedar Lodge where we fell asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillow!

PART Two --- CHRISTMAS IN BRANSON

Day Three

Breakfast in the Governor's Suite

We met in the Governor's Suite in the Valley View Lodge, where some of our group were staying. Because of the size of the living and dining areas, we set it up as our SCIL Travel Club Clubhouse. so it was a perfect place to meet for an early breakfast.
We had a twenty-mile drive to get to our destination so we occupied ourselves by singing along to camp songs like 'Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah' on the entertainment monitors in the Trips Inc. ADA vans.

Dogwood Canyon Nature Park

We started our adventure at Dogwood Canyon Nature Park which is an outdoor Ozark Mountain paradise featuring 10,000 acres of natural beauty and rugged scenery.

Tram Tour

ADA Accessible Open-air Tram

Amy, one of our Trips Inc. travel guides, had made prior arrangements for us to have an ADA accessible open-air tram tour of the Dogwood Canyon Nature Park.

Our knowledgeable tram tour guide, Blake, took us on a 2-hour tram ride through the nature park showing us towering cliffsides, majestic waterfalls, scenic creek beds, handcrafted bridges, lush landscape, and native wildlife. He also told us about the history of the area as well as many other interesting stories. He even showed us all the best fishing spots!
Blake showed us the Arkansas State line and explained that Dogwood Canyon is so big, part of it is in Missouri and part of it is in Arkansas! We see sites like the Hope Wilderness Chapel, the Treehouse Masters' treehouse built by Pete Nelson and his crew, and the park's largest inhabitants, the bison, elks, and longhorn cattle!
After our tour and some free time to explore the park, we had lunch with at the Dogwood Canyon Grill.

Followed by a trip to the...

Wonders of Wildlife Museum and Aquarium

We spent the second half of our day at the Wonders of Wildlife (W.O.W.) Museum and Aquarium.

Johnny Morris’ Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium spans 350,000 square feet, has more than 1.5 miles of trails through the exhibits and displays which feature 35,000 live fish, and more than 800 different species of mammals, reptiles, birdsamphibians, --- such as frogs, --- and birds. and takes you on a journey through amazing 'habitats' that entertain and educate while sharing the story of America's most significant conservationists throughout history and today.

The Aquarium

There was so much to see at the aquarium! We saw life-sized replicas of historic fishing boats like the one belonging to Johnny Morris (the founder of W.O.W.). We saw amazing aquarium habitats like the three-story saltwater Great Barrier Reef aquarium filled with Maori wrasse, potato cod, Queensland grouper, & moray eels, the two-story circular Shipwreck Tank with the open Stingray aquarium at the bottom where we were able to pet the stingrays, and even the 'Marvel of the Deep' --- the walk-through 300,000-gallon open ocean habitat with zebra sharks, leopard rays, and sea turtles.

the Out to Sea Shark Dive

We also saw the all-new 'Out to Sea Shark Dive' that takes people under water inside a metal cage to come face-to-fin with sand tiger sharks, brown sharks, barracudas, and Atlantic goliath groupers. The state-of-the-art air helmets allows people to breathe comfortably underwater without having to be a certified diver! We also visited the swamp area to check out the Alligator Pit and we used the 360 degree pop-up observation bubbles in the Amazon Rainforest to feel like we were in the tank with the red-bellied piranhas!

Conservation & Global warning

Tropical rainforests are often called the 'lungs of the planet.'

One of the most incredible things we learned about was the tropical rainforests being the 'lungs of the planet.' The rainforests generally draw in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. But the amount of carbon dioxide they absorb depends hugely on the climate. It was sobering to learn just how vulnerable the rainforest is to climate change.

mOST IMPORTANTLY we learned we can make a difference!

Ten Tips to help stop Global Warming

1) Reduce, Reuse, Recycle --- 2) Walk or Bike instead of Drive --- 3) If you have to drive, buy a fuel efficient car like a hybrid or an electric car --- 4) Take the train, a bus, or carpool --- 5) Plant a tree --- 6) Think about using Solar or use less heat and air conditioning --- 7) Clean or replace dirty air conditioner filters as recommended --- 8) Use LED light bulbs --- 9) Buy local goods and products --- 10) Check your tires monthly and keep them inflated.

The Museum

We explored the amazing exhibits in the Wildlife Galleries that featured some of the most extreme wildlife habitats in the world. State-of-the-art 4D 'dioramas' were created with careful attention to detail. Each environment included incredible realistic wildlife, massive hand-painted murals, native 'vegetation,' and special effects --- like sound, smells, and temperature. There's nothing like walking into the chill of the Arctic Circle or the dry heat of Africa.

Wildlife Habitat Exhibits

Wildlife Habitat Exhibits. We saw all kinds of animals from foxes to zebras and everything in between!
We saw the Native American Hall, Theodore Roosevelt's Cabin, the Lewis and Clark Collection, the National Park exhibit, Boone and Crocket exhibit, Sheep Mountain, Bucks and Bulls, and the Game Birds exhibit.
We saw a recreation of a historic 1920's safari campsite. While the campers were relaxing comfortably inside their tent, 'nocturnal' animals like lions, were creeping about outside! And, lions weren't the only animals lurking around out there either!
We saw the animals of the north and south poles at the Polar Expedition exhibit! We even saw the northern lights!
At Penguin Cove we watched the Gentoo Penguins swim and play in their habitat.
We also saw the re-creation of the original Bass Pro Shop where Johnny Morris first started selling bait and tackle out of his dad's Brown Derby Liquor Store!

DINNER AT HEMINGWAY'S BLUE WATER CAFE

The perfect ending to our very busy day was spent at Hemingway's Blue Water Café for a delicious dinner across from the 60,000 gallon freshwater aquarium built by the team of "TANKED," the popular tv show on Animal Planet!

PART Three --- CHRISTMAS IN BRANSON

Day Four

Now, we can relax!

We had such an action-packed day yesterday, we're taking things at a more 'leisurely' pace today.

Breakfast

BiG Cedar Lodge Style!

Anyone who was interested, received a light 'Continental Breakfast' delivered to their room at a time of their choosing between 6 - 8 am
Then, at 11:00 am we gathered back at our "SCIL Travel Club Clubhouse" in the Governor's Suite. for 'Brunch!'
We walk into the SCIL Travel Club Clubhouse and can't believe our eyes!
Laid out on the sideboard and dining room table is a 'lavish' feast fit for a King --- or Queen --- and a PERSONAL CHEF is standing behind the kitchen counter ready to prepare food just for us!
Chef Jean-Paul
Comfort food is sort of like a hug that tastes good.
We help ourselves to yummy platters of hot carved meats,
and platters of sliced cheeses,
and a variety of salads like potato, macaroni, and coleslaw.
Not to mention trays of fresh fruit,
breakfast pastries,
and mini quiches.
Chef Jean-Paul does a cooking demonstration for us to show us how to make a quiche. He even gives us the recipe so we can make it when we get back home!
We get to decide what he puts in it... Meat, or vegetables, or both, or maybe just cheese? What do you think we should pick?
The chef tells us he can create 'made-to-order' breakfast sandwiches for us if we want!
He'll even make them with crispy waffles instead of bread!
Or he can whip up something sweet for us, he said, like strawberry crepes with powdered sugar!
'Crêpes in the City' is a casual French-inspired crêperie (which is a small restaurant that serves crepes) located outside of Cleveland, Ohio.
Or, if we want to splurge, he'll make us make something special like a Monte Cristo!
Oh, boy! THAT'S what I think I'm going to have!

dID YOU KNOW?

Scrumdiddlyumptious” is now recognized as a word in the Oxford Dictionary and was made famous by British novelist, Roald Dahl, who wrote children's books like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Gremlins, and Matilda. The Oxford Dictionary definition of scrumdiddlyumptious is: “extremely scrumptious; excellent, splendid; (especially regarding food) delicious.”

AND, DID YOU KNOW?

The 'Monte Cristo' sandwich originated in France and got it's name as a tribute to the French novel The Count of Monte Christo by Alexander Dumas. The traditional Monte Cristo is a quick and easy sandwich with ham, turkey, and swiss cheese slices, dipped in an egg/milk mixture and fried to a golden brown. This hot sandwich is often served with berry jam on the side.
The French novel, The Count of Monte Cristo was made into a movie in 2002. Did you see it?
After thirteen terrible years of being wrongfully imprisoned in the island prison of Chateau d'If, Edmond Dantes escapes and comes back as the Count of Monte Cristo to take his revenge on those who put him there.
It's nice out and the view is spectacular!
So, we eat brunch outside on either the large deck on the third floor or on the second-floor balcony off of the Master bedroom.

After one, or two (or even three in some cases) trips to the buffet we all have the same idea...

Time for a little snooze...

Afternoon Activities

As our food comas have finally worn off, we are starting to think about wanting to see something besides the inside of our eyelids.

Activity Options: Mini Golf

Some of us went to play a little Mini Golf.

Included with our stay at Big Cedar Lodge is a nine-hole putt-putt course where we can put our 'putting skills' to the test and enjoy a friendly competition with our fellow putters.

We can even take a shot from inside the large-mouth bass.

Activity Options: Pickleball & Horseshoes

Ridge Top Pickleball Court

The brand-new Ridge Top Pickle Ball court is now open and available to guests staying at Big Cedar Lodge! So, some of us picked up a racket and pickleball at the Registration Building and headed off to the Ridge Top Pickleball court for an exciting game of pickleball!

Some played a fun game of horseshoes. How close can you throw a horseshoe to the metal 'spike?'

Volleyball & shuffleboard

Beautifully landscaped with a fantastic lake front view, the Sand Volleyball court offers many hours of fun in the sun for the guests at Big Cedar Lodge. So, some us spent some time there watching a game or two of volleyball!
Next to the Sand Volleyball court is the Shuffleboard court. Some of us checked out some shuffleboard equipment at Guest Services and learned how to play the game of shuffleboard!

ACTIVITY OPTIONS: Cedar Creek Spa

Cedar Creek Spa & Salon is a world-class, 18,000-square-foot salon and spa.

Due to the generosity of our wealthy benefactors, we have the option to visit the spa if we want to.

And, some of us did just that!
Cedar Creek Spa features hand-hewn timber ceilings, natural stone floors, handcrafted stained-glass accents and antique-style chandeliers to create a luxurious and relaxing environment for a day of pampering.
The grand, double staircase leads up to the eleven luxurious treatment rooms.
Each treatment room has its own cozy fireplace.
The technician works on your feet as you relax in one of the massaging pedicure chairs.
You can also sit by the fire while you get a 'manicure.'

Those over 18 have access to the indoor grotto pool, sauna, steam roomopen-air shower, and ice room as long as they are booked for a massage or facial.

The Grotto Pool is softly lit with candles lining the rustic stone walls and features underwater lounges, full-body massage jets, and secluded coves.

You can experience the contrast of hot and cold by combining the soothing heat of the pool, steam room, or sauna with the refreshing cold therapy of the ice room.

Even the hot tub has a fireplace!
Or, you can sign up for the 'Ozarks Rain Experience' which is Big Cedar Creek's version of a 'vichy shower.' The result is part water therapy and part scrub-massage.
They also have a full-service salon, so you can make an appointment with one of their licensed salon stylists to give you a whole new look!
You can get a 70-minute facial which includes neck, shoulder, head, and hand massages.

Talented, licensed 'estheticians' provide custom-designed facial treatments using the best product lines to meet each person's individual needs.

Facials are not just for the ladies either!
You can get a 60 to 90 minute massage treatment which includes a consultation with your therapist to design the perfect combination of techniques to give you the best massage.
From deep-tissue massages to pedicures, and haircuts, Cedar Creek Salon and Spa offers a variety of massages and treatments for men.

ACTIVITY OPTIONS: CEDAR Mountain Stables

Cedar Mountain Stables offers a variety of activities and events including: pony rides, horseback rides, carriage rides, campfire wagon tours, & holiday light tours.
You can saddle up and go for a ride...
or, just go and meet the horses, like Patches the pony!
The horses are always happy to meet new people!
One of them might even give you a hug!
You can enjoy the scenic beauty around Big Cedar Lodge in a horse-drawn carriage...

Did You Know?

The newest member of Cedar Mountain Stables, is a 4 year old Clydesdale called "Table Rock Tim!" Tim's job is to pull the carriage around the Big Cedar grounds. He is a very friendly and loving horse and very popular with all the guests!

... or go for a wagon ride!

ACTIVITY OPTIONS: Bent Hook Marina

Bent Hook Marina is a full service marina that offers boat and watercraft rentals, water sport equipment rentals, fishing services and guides, not to mention their famous lake tour, "Goin’ Jessi."
In the summer season there are a lot of activities you and take advantage of the seasonal lounge chairs and beach umbrellas on Bent Hook Beach, across from the marina! They even have an outdoor shower there!
Also in the warmer months, Big Cedar Lodge has an ice cream 'truck' called "Frosty's." It's actually a vintage Airstream trailer that makes the rounds throughout the property. Frosty's provides one more snack option as well as ice cream, fruit smoothies, and other seasonal treats.
In addition to the Bent Hook Beach, guests can enjoy the four seasonal heated outdoor swimming pools, the three hot tubs, the kiddie pools, a waterslide, and the lazy river on the property. The pools are kept at a toasty 80-84° F

But not all lake activities are just for the summer months. Some of us decided to try fishing!

The fish are always biting at Table Top Lake!

Professional Fishing Guides

Did you know?

You can hire one of the professional fishing guides who have years of experience and they'll take you to all the best fishing spots on Table Top Lake!

Some signed up for the private 1-hour Goin' Jessi Table Rock Lake cruise.

"Goin’ Jessi," an exact replica of a 1934 Chris Craft, named after Waylon Jennings's wife, Jessi. The "Goin’ Jessi" will take passengers on an hour-long cruise around the 43,000-acre Table Rock Lake.

The Lady Liberty Yacht is docked at Camp Long Creek just south of Bent Hook Marina and offers sunset dinner cruises around Table Rock Lake.

ACTIVITY OPTIONS: A nice stroll around the grounds

The scenery is breathtaking everywhere you look at Big Cedar Lodge!

aCTIVITY OPTION: sTROLLING AROUND THE GROUNDS

There are many winding paths and walkways throughout the Big Cedar Lodge property.

Some decided to take a 'leisurely' walk around the grounds. There is so much to see at Big Cedar Lodge, such as:

The Garden Chapel

Located along the rolling hillside is the charming Garden Chapel with its circle drive, fountain, and whitewashed 'lap siding.' The country chapel seats up to 80 guests and has floor-to-ceiling windows with handcrafted shutters and vintage hanging lanterns.

Devil's Pool Springs

This beautiful area in the Ozarks was once home to the Osage Indians and at the base of this ravine, there was a natural spring named Devil's Pool. The pool's name comes from the Indian term, "Mnicapi Mahetuya" which means bottomless pit.

The deep spring flowed through the Big Cedar Hollow until 1958, at which time, the river was damned to create Table Rock Lake and the spring pretty much disappeared. Devil's Pool served as a primary source of water for the Indians, trappers, early settlers, and the Simmons homestead which still exists on the property.

Devil's Pool Swinging Suspension Bridge

This is a short 'suspension' bridge connecting the Devil's Pool Restaurant and their parking lot.

There many beautiful waterfalls and bridges on the Big Cedar Lodge property!
Particularly the Devil's Pool Amish Bridge

Did you know?

The new Amish hand-crafted bridge located by the Devil's Pool Restaurant was completed in two weeks...not bad considering it was constructed without power tools!

There is incredible handcrafted Ironwork throughout the property to see. The most common detail is the Big Cedar logo (top middle).
Some just went exploring to see what other 'accommodations' were available at Big Cedar Lodge.
Like the private log cabins across the lake,
and, the quaint single family cottages.
There were cabins down at Camp Long Creek.
and plenty of awesome Glamping Tents!
There were also some exclusive accommodations available like the Spa Cottage (top) and the Carriage House Cottage (bottom).

ACTIVITY OPTION: Keeping warm by the fire

Some took the Fireside Yoga class.

All through the fall and winter months Big Cedar Lodge offers an unique fitness class called Fireside Yoga! This is a calming 90 minute session of nutrition education and yoga instruction. And, beginners are welcome!

Others preferred to find a cozy seat by the lobby fireplace and just do a little people watching.
A few of us spent time at the gaming tables in the lobby. One had building logs and the other had a community puzzle anybody could work on.
Most of us stopped into the gift shop.
It was a good place to pick up some souvenirs and do a little Christmas shopping!

Afternoon Refreshments

Truman's cafe

No matter which activities each of us chose, we all stopped by Truman's Café at some point in the day for a little refreshment.

The Truman Café and Coffee Bar opens early for muffins and pastries, biscuits and gravy and other simple breakfast pleasures. It's a great place to grab a quick and healthy lunch too. they have lots of soups, sandwiches, salads, and wraps on the menu. When the café closes mid-afternoon, it's still the perfect place to stop for ice cream, frozen fruit drinks, and other yummy treats.

Some of us sat inside, some sat outside, but everybody took a few minutes to relax at Truman's Café!
Soooo good!

The Showboat Branson Belle

After our various afternoon activities we go back to our rooms to relax for a bit then get ready to go out to dinner...

...dinner AND a show, that is, on the Showboat Branson Belle!

All performances aboard the Showboat Branson Belle Christmas Dinner Cruise are family-friendly and suitable for all ages. It's an entertaining way for the whole family to spend time on the lake, and it’s a lake adventure that comes with an exciting variety show filled with music, comedy, dancing, magic, and a sensational 3-course meal! The Christmas Cruises are scheduled at 12:00 noon, 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., from November 6 through December 23. We are attending the 8:00 p.m. show and arrive, as requested, 45 minutes before showtime.

The Showboat Branson Belle is docked at White River Landing on Table Rock Lake. It's about 15 - 20 minutes away from Big Cedar Lodge.
The view of Table Rock Lake and the Showboat is spectacular from White River Landing. In addition of the Showboat Branson Belle being docked there, there are also two retail shops and landscaped walkways on White River Landing.
The Showboat Branson Belle is an impressive 700-passenger riverboat! It is 78 feet wide265 feet long, and weighs 2,500,000 pounds making it very stable. In addition, Table Rock Lake is very calm and winds are minimal so there is very little movement on board the vessel as it travels through the water so you can leave your 'Dramamine' behind!

Having the nostalgic appearance of a yesteryear riverboat --- like the kind of vessels that were once plentiful along the Mississippi --- the Showboat Branson Belle is an 1890s style paddle wheeler, which is a majestic site on beautiful Table Rock Lake. In addition to an incredible dinner show, guests aboard the enormous showboat can enjoy the panoramic views of the lake and Ozarks hills from the boat’s 360-degree views and multi-level decks.

Did you know?

The Showboat Branson Belle was launched from her lake side shipyard August 13, 1994, using two tons of bananas as a lubricant for the nine second slide into the water. She traveled 14 'mph' during the launch, faster than she'll ever travel on water. It's peak speed is 11 'mph' and averages 6 'mph.'

Each cruise includes deck time to explore the ship and enjoy the beautiful scenic views of the lake and the surrounding Ozarks from all exterior decks of the Showboat Branson Belle. The main exterior deck is on the very top of the ship, where the captain's wheelhouse is located.
Guests are invited explore the three upper decks of the ship, and visit the Captain in his pilot-house, which features the vintage captain’s wheel which was restored from the C.C. Slider towboat which operated 1928 - 1952

Did you know?

The captain's wheel is 10 feet, 2 inches in diameter and made of solid maple wood!

The Showboat Branson Belle is an ADA Accessible vessel.

The Showboat Branson Belle accommodates guests with disabilities by providing wheelchairs to transport them to and from the ship and allow them to board the ship among of the first groups of guests. This avoids them from having to dodge people who do not have mobility challenges and makes navigating down the ramp so much easier. There are also elevators on board with access to all three levels and an EMT aboard for every cruise.

The Showboat Branson Belle’s 'atrium'-style dining theater area has three levels, all of which provide excellent views of the stage. The lowest level of the ship has the engine room and kitchen.

Showboat Branson Belle’s 2.5 hour Christmas Cruise features popular music from the sensational 60s to today’s hits, delightful soundtrack favorites from major movies, with a sprinkle here and a dash there of your favorite Christmas songs! A fantastic four-piece live band backs up incredible singers who display impressive vocal ranges and tight harmonies. Laughter and a generous dose of magic come courtesy of the ship’s master of ceremonies, and the Showboat Dancers with entertaining displays of rhythm and fancy footwork! And, or course, there’s a scrumptious three-course meal freshly prepared in the ship’s galley, ensuring the guests have an unforgettable holiday cruise!

The Showboat Branson Belle is fully decorated with Holiday Cheer!

Seating

All of the tables are "Dixie Stampede" style which means all seats face the stageOur seats are in the first row of the balcony --- Row FF. This is considered 'The Captain's Row' and has a great 'unobstructed' view of the stage. There are 24 seats in our row so we are all able to sit together. All meals are served directly to each table. There are no self-service buffet lines, salad bars, or beverage counters on the Showboat Branson Belle. We have Tiffany as our server tonight. She's super friendly and very attentive.
Our Showboat experience includes a delicious 3-course meal, prepared right there in the ship’s 'galley' and served in the ship’s atrium-style dining theater prior to settling in for the show. Our dinner menu offers several options.

The Showboat Branson Belle sure knows how to put on a show! Their Christmas show features music from the 1960s to today, great movie soundtrack moments, as well as Christmas favorites sprinkled in throughout the show, performed by five-star entertainers with powerhouse vocals and tight harmonies backed by the four-piece Belle band! Plus, Christopher James --- the master of ceremonies --- entertained us with his magic and comedy! Of course no show would be complete without the must-see spectacle of rhythm and footwork from the toe-tapping Showboat Dancers!
We just had the BEST TIME EVER!
When we get back to our rooms at the Big Cedar Lodge we find that the 'Cookie Lady' has been there!
Every night we find a Pepparkakor cookie and a recipe card waiting for us on our beds. On the back of the card is the story about the Pepparkakor and about the old Swedish custom related to them.

Chapel of the Ozarks

Historical Concepts, a traditional architectural firm in Atlanta, designed the Chapel of the Ozarks for Johnny Morris. Johnny specifically wanted a chapel for small events and weddings, as well as to create an iconic focal point that would set the tone for the property.
The architects gathered inspiration for this romantic chapel from small, rural churches and historic National Parks structures in the Ozark Mountains, to create the feeling that the chapel had been on the site for generations. This 3-story chapel features European-inspired elements like arched windows, native limestone detailing, and a steeple with a bell tower --- all custom made by local Ozarks artisan craftsmen.
The Chapel of the Ozarks is located high above Table Rock Lake and provides panoramic views of the lake below through an impressive wall of floor-to-ceiling windows.
As you enter through antique pine wood doors, the chapel opens to soaring 23-foot vaulting ceilings with seating for up to 180 guests. The corner fireplaces frame the view of the lake.
The fact that the chapel is perched on the side of a hill actually worked out well because it allowed for two sub-levels below the sanctuary. One level immediately below with 20-ft. high ceilings is the perfect place for wedding receptions, and below that there’s a 'mezzanine' level that can be used as bridal suite with a small space on the ground floor makes a good grooms’ room.
The Chapel of the Ozarks in the fall.
With a view of the Chapel of the Ozarks from the wraparound porch of Jack's Cabin.
The Big Cedar Lodge property has over TEN wedding 'venues' to choose from. Many couples reserve Jack's Cabin for their honeymoon suite because it's exclusive and so unique!

Jack's Cabin

Built in the 1840's, Jack’s Cabin --- named after golf legend Jack Nicklaus --- is an exclusive 1,100 square foot cabin at Top of the Rock.

A brief history of jack's cabin

This historic civil war era log cabin was the home of Daniel Turner and located in Washington County, Missouri along the Old Webster Road that Daniel helped build. It was this road --- later known as the 'trail of tears' --- that southeastern Indians, who were torn from their homes, traveled on. Years later the road and cabin were used by Union forces during the Civil War to retreat from Confederate troops led by General Sterling Price during the Battle of Pilot Knob on September 27th, 1864. The cabin was taken apart in 2011 and moved to Top of the Rock where it was put back together by local Ozark and Amish craftsmen.
This rustic retreat offers amenities like a large copper soaking tub, a king-sized bed, a loft with a second king-sized bed, a wood burning stone fireplace, a wet bar with small refrigerator and microwave, a private outdoor shower with views of the lake, and a wrap-around screened-in porch.

Lost Canyon Cave & Nature Trail Cart Tour

Top of the Rock Ozarks Heritage Preserve Welcome Center

Our Trips Inc. group leader, David, goes into the Welcome Center at Top of the Rock and buys our tickets for the Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail Cart Tour.

Before we know it our Trips Inc. group leaders, David, Darnell, Ed, and Amy, have us buckled into four electric golf carts.
We had such an early start there is no one ahead of us! With Ed's cart in the lead, we promptly drive in single file along the two-and-a-half mile winding path through the Ozarks!
We see SPECTACULAR scenery!
We go across an Amish handcrafted covered bridge!
See AMAZING waterfalls!
And, then we come to the awe-inspiring Lost Canyon Cave entrance!
As soon as we enter the cave, we notice the temperature is getting cooler!

Did you know?

The temperature of a cave is usually close to the average annual temperature for the region where the cave is located. So, the Lost Canyon Cave remains about 60 degrees all year long!

The reason why caves have a constant temperature is because rock is slow to transmit heat. By the time the summer heat on the surface reaches inside the cave, it's already winter!
We drive into the cave and come to the Bat Bar! We all get a refreshing cup of 'Bat's Bite' --- which is strawberry & peach lemonade --- and continue further into the cave.
The centerpiece of this four-story cave is a cascading waterfall surrounded by viewing balconies on all four levels
Looking back, after our hour-long golf cart cave tour, we are so glad we came early! Look at that long line of golf carts waiting to enter the cave! Yikes!
Boy, I'm sure glad I didn't hit the snooze button this morning!

If you would like to join John & Amy from tpf: Trips, Places, and Fun Travel Plus for lunch at the Osage restaurant and go with them on the Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail Golf Cart tour, play the above video!

John and Amy Burton have a travel blog called 'tpf: Trips, Places, and Fun Travel Plus'

Second Stop

Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum

The Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum is a 35,000-square-foot museum filled with Ozarks history. 'Dioramas' showcasing prehistoric creatures who roamed the Ozarks long ago, Native American artifacts and art and an assortment of Civil War 'relics' are just some of what you'll see on a tour through the museum.
As we enter the museum, we're welcomed by a massive wooly mammoth that stands just inside the entrance. Skeletal remains from other large animals that have been recovered in the Ozarks over time are also on display, such as a giant ground sloth, a saber tooth cat, and a short-faced bear (which would have stood much taller than a modern-day grizzly bear!).
Also in the museum, there is a model of the Terror Bird which resembles an ostrich with a more terrifying personality. Scientists believe the bird stood more than eight feet tall, weighed at least 300 pounds and used its heavy beak to take down prey. The Hell Pig, the Bear Dog, and the North American Jaguar are other ferocious animals also shown throughout the museum.
Native American culture is beautifully represented throughout many areas of the museum.
Part of Johnny Morris's personal collection of locally found arrowheads are on display, some of which were found during the building of Top of the Rock. Many are thought to be tied to the Osage tribe, who frequented the White River near what is now Table Rock Lake.
Before the Table Rock Lake Dam was built, archaeologists explored the area, which is shown in a series of photographs in the museum. Much of the museum's artifacts came from that dig, resulting in the uncovering of pottery, weapons, and clothing, all of which you can see in the museum. We even saw pieces of an actual canoe Native Americans once used to travel waterways!
The museum also focuses on the American West and Civil War eras. A large gallery begins with features, photos and details from the lives of figures like Buffalo Bill. The gallery then advances to the Civil War. Cannons, rifles, sidearms, and 'sabers' are on exhibit, along with uniforms, flags, and paintings of several people of influence like President Abraham Lincoln. They even had a small locket containing a strand of Lincoln's hair!

Did you know?

There are a total of 33 fireplaces up at Top of the Rock!

Third Stop

Cathedral of nature

Johnny Morris opened Top of the Rock Golf Course in 2014.
A year later, after days of heavy rain, a sinkhole 40 feet deep and 70 feet wide opened along the large putting green.
Johnny Morris, founder of Bass Pro Shops, points to the massive sinkhole. Experts urged the 74-year-old to fill the hole with clay and boulders and move on.
But Johnny has been fascinated with caves for yearshe even discovered the Lost Canyon cave nearly 30 years ago. He was intrigued by the possibility of the sinkhole leading to another unknown cave system  so, he decided against covering up the sinkhole.
Instead of panicking when the massive sinkhole swallowed tons of earth at his exquisite new golf course, Johnny saw it as an adventure worth digging into. "People say I'm crazy but I'm happy about every nickel we've spent down here," said Johnny, who refused to say how much was spent exactly.
The dig uncovered tall limestone formations that Johnny believes are further clues of caverns.
For the self-made billionaire, unlocking a natural mystery by digging further underground is worth it. Johnny has always seen opportunity in unexpected places, and clearly his instincts are good: 'Forbes' lists him as the world's 397th wealthiest person with an estimated net worth of $4.4 billion.
It’s been 7 years since a small sinkhole opened at Top of the Rock. After removing over 72,000 dump truck loads of dirt out of the sinkhole, the majestic "Cathedral of Nature" --- which it is now called --- has become a breathtaking addition to the Top of the Rock property.

Fifth Stop ~ Lunch

Arnie's Barn restaurant

Arnie’s Barn restaurant serves Texas BBQ and Tex-Mex cuisine with magnificent views of the Top of the Rock driving range and the Cathedral of Nature below.
We couldn't pass up the view so we had a late lunch out on the terrace overlooking the golf course.
The food was DEEE-LISH!
And, of course we all had to try an 'Arnold Palmer' which is made up of a combination of half ice tea and half lemonade. --- made famous by the American professional golfer of the same name!
You can roll me out the door now, caz I can't eat another bite!

DID YOU KNOW?

The Arnie's Barn restaurant was named in honor of golfing legend, Arnold Palmer. The beautiful, rustic structure began as an old barn near Arnold Palmer’s hometown of Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The 150-year-old barn was carefully taken apart by Ozark craftsman, Danny Schwartz and his family, transported to Top of the Rock, and rebuilt board by board!

Arnold Palmer was an American professional golfer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most charismatic players in the sport's history. Dating back to 1955, he won numerous events on both the PGA Tour and the circuit now known as PGA Tour Champions.
Johnny Morris and Arnold Palmer

Johnny Morris, founder and CEO of Bass Pro Shops, Big Cedar Lodge, and Top of the Rock Ozarks Heritage Preserve, expressed condolences and shared memories of Arnold Palmer upon learning of the golf legend’s passing on September 25, 2016:

"I am saddened by the passing of Arnold Palmer, a giant of the golf world and a gentleman of the highest order. Arnold and I formed a very special relationship over a period of eight years during the development of Top of the Rock Ozarks Heritage Preserve. Together, we visited his hometown of Latrobe, Pennsylvania and toured a 150-year-old barn we would relocate and rebuild – plank by plank – to create Arnie’s Barn, a restaurant, a general store, and pro shop at Top of the Rock. Part of Arnold’s lasting legacy is here in the Ozarks with the signature driving range he designed at Top of the Rock. I will always look back fondly on the time I spent with Arnold on that range. Arnold had a deep understanding and appreciation for how golf connected people to the landscape and to nature. His passion inspired us to host the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar Lodge, now a premier annual PGA TOUR Champions event that helped make the Ozarks the emerging golf destination it is. Beyond Arnold’s enormous passion for the game of golf, I will remember him for his charisma, generosity, and friendship."
Arnold Daniel Palmer - September 10, 1929 - September 25, 2016
We stopped into Arnie's General Store to pick up a souvenir or two before heading on our way.

Stop Six

Chapel of the ozarks

We go down to the Chapel of the Ozarks and step inside. It was stunning and very peaceful inside. It was also empty so we had the place to ourselves for a while. So, we sat around and talked about our favorite parts of the day.
For me it was being in the Lost Canyon Cave. What was your favorite part of today's adventure?
The sun is starting to go down so we go outside and watch the Civil War 're-enactors' get ready to light the canon!
From behind us, up on the Buffalo Bar terrace, the sounds of the bagpipes playing Amazing Grace filter down through the cool evening air. It sounds so clear, like he's playing right next to us.
As the sun sets the cannon is fired and everyone claps and cheers!
Boy, oh boy, that was terrific!
I don't know about you, but I'm ready for a nap!
We get back into the Trips Inc ADA Vans and return to our rooms at the Big Cedar Lodge for some much needed R&R!
By 8:00 pm we're well-rested and hungry!
We usually meet up in the Governor's Suite in the Valley View Lodge --- or as we like to call it our 'SCIL Travel Club Clubhouse' --- where some of our group are staying. But tonight we all meet in the Lobby of Falls Lodge, where the rest of us are calling our 'home away from home.'
Our Trips Inc. travel guides drive us over to the Devil's Pool Restaurant and Buzzard Bar for dinner. It's located on the Big Cedar Lodge property so it only takes a few minutes to get there.
We find a parking spot near the Devil's Pool Bridge
We were early for our reservations so we go on the bridge to check it out before going into the restaurant.
It was a great view from the bridge but our tummy's were growling and the Devil's Pool Restaurant was calling out names!
The inside of the Devil's Pool Restaurant has the welcoming, rustic setting of a log cabin with a large, woodburning fireplace.
The 'hand-wrought' metal chandeliers cast a warm glow over antique furnishings and their 100-year-old mahogany bar.
The Devil's Pool has an outdoor deck with scenic views of the surroundings, it was too cold to eat outside.
So, we sat at some cozy tables by the big stone fireplace instead.

Dinner

Devil's Pool Restaurant is known for their delicious southern homestyle cooking. Do you see anything you like?
I'm having the Raviolis. What are you having?

Dessert

Save room for dessert!

Anybody want to split a Devil's Pool Sundae with me?

The Devil's Pool Sundae starts with a chocolate chip cookie, topped with an Oreo stuffed brownie, with a mound of vanilla bean ice cream on top of that and then drizzled with both chocolate and caramel sauce, and sprinkled with candied pecans.

Yes, please!

Entertainment in the Buzzard Bar

After dinner we wanted to go downstairs to the Buzzard Bar to see the entertainment. As there are no elevators in the Devil's Pool Restaurant we go outside and take the ramp down and around to the back where there is access to the bar area.
We enter the Buzzard Bar and find that Amy and Darnell have already saved us some seats.
Clay Self, known as the 'Singing Cowboy' is playing his guitar and singing country songs with two other musicians.
Thanks, Woody!
The Singing Cowboy is T E R R I F F I C !!!
As we leave the Buzzard Bar and get back into the Trips Inc. ADA vans, we see Devil's Bridge is all lit up! Beautiful, isn't it?

The history of Devil's Pool

The gate to Devil's Pool.

Every world class resort has a world class restaurant and Big Cedar Lodge is no different. What is different is it's located about 'a stones throw away' from where, centuries ago, the Osage Indians found a spring they believed was so deep that it flowed down to the Devil himself. They named it Devils Pool, and that name that has stuck for centuries.

In the late 1920s, businessman Jude Simmons and railroad executive Harry Worman bought 300 acres of forest to build upscale resort homes at Devil's Pool. Simmons constructed a log mansion, and Worman built a stone and stucco house.

Devil's Pool Ranch.

In 1947, Real estate executive Dan Norris purchased the property added a lodge, swimming pool, and stable and called it Devil's Pool Ranch.

The backside of the Devil's Pool Restaurant and the Recreational Building on Kid's Pond.

in 1958, when the White River was dammed up to form Table Rock Lake, it overflowed Devils Pool. It is now only clearly visible when the lake levels in Table Rock Lake drop significantly. Then you can see that the water coming up from Devils Pool is a different color that the rest of the lake. The name, Devil's Pool, comes from the Indian term, "Mnicapi Mahetuya" which means bottomless pit. Devil's Pool served as a main source of water for the Indians, trappers, early settlers, and the Simmons homestead which still exists on the property.

The Simmons Homestead is now the Devil's Pool Restaurant. Thanks, Johnny!

In 1987, Johnny Morris, Founder of Bass Pro Shops bought the land, and, as part of building Big Cedar Lodge, restored the original Simmons and Worman buildings. As part of this restoration the former Simmons house was renovated and turned into the world class restaurant, the Devil's Pool Restaurant.

.

And, the rest, as they say, is history!

We arrive back at the Big Cedar Lodge and are once again awed by the blanket of stars over head. It sure is beautiful here. Don't you agree?
Good night to all, and to all a good night!
