Star Board Term Four Week Two

Principal's Message

Accord Teacher Only Days November 21 and 28

To meet the needs of the learners and to prepare for the NCEA changes ahead, as already advertised, we have two more Accord days this year.

November 21 will see teachers gathering to understand the impact of the NCEA changes on their pedagogical content knowledge, such as:

  • Curriculum design thinking
  • Impact of mātauranga Māori on course design
  • Understanding subject-specific foundational literacy and numeracy
  • Understanding the new assessment materials

The NCEA Learning Area Leads (LALs) from the Ministry will be holding workshops to support the Accord Days for the Wellington region on Monday 21 November. There will also be subject facilitators gathering locally to perform the same function.

The 28th will see school’s focusing on their own contexts. St Matthew’s will be focusing on mātauranga Māori, Cultural Competency and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Events ahead

It is a short term and a busy term. Parents and caregivers, please make sure to calendar the significant dates ahead so you are able to join us.

Boarding Note from Jo Booth

With less than six weeks to go until the end of the term, a few boarding reminders -

  1. Study leave begins for all Year 11-13 students on Friday 4th November. Please ensure Orah passes are submitted early so we can avoid wasteful catering.
  2. There are no more exeats this term, so the boarding house will be open each weekend until the end of the school year.
  3. Boarding houses will remain open on the two Teacher Only Days scheduled in November. At the moment we are in the process of planning outings on these days. More information to come.
  4. Please note the date of the legendary Boarders Christmas Dinner on Thursday 1st December as we would like all boarders to attend.

Thank you.

Jo

Congratulations to our 1st XI Cricket team

A great win by our 1st XI Cricket team against Waicol yesterday afternoon see them progress to the Central Districts final to be held next Thursday. Emma McLeod opened the batting and ended up 115 not out.

Shout out to Alexandria (Poppet) Anstis

Poppet won NZ Mounted Games u15 National Individuals Championship 2022. This is the 3rd time she has won this NZ title (which is unprecedented in the juniors). She is really in great form after her European trip; where the u18 NZ team competed in France and came 7th in the world, and then Poppet also competed for NZ in u15 pairs in Ireland and finished 4th in the world (the highest placing any NZer has ever come on a borrowed pony in Mounted Games).

Intermediate Department Emergency Services visits

This term the Year 7 / 8’s Inquiry Unit is “Emergency 111” where we are looking at the Fire service, Ambulance and Police. This week we were fortunate to have the St Johns and Police visit the school and we visited the Fire Station. Each service spoke about their jobs and they received many questions from the girls. This will now lead into looking at the services available and how they can be used.
