Since August 2020, I got involved in my boyfriend’s company “Bella Ciao Ciao” Being involved in his business and attending farmer’s markets on a weekly basis gave me the idea for my Senior Project. I wanted to find a new idea to innovate promotions for small businesses and a new way to modernize farmers’ markets. I noticed a lot of problems involved with farmer’s markets. There was a lack of promotions within the small businesses and the markets themselves; additionally, a decline in people going to farmer’s markets.
The Problem
Many vendors don’t have the expenses to buy a custom tent with their logo on it. Many of these tents vary from $500 - $1000 and many have to pay tent insurance which is roughly $300 a year. There is an increase in farmer’s markets “Nationwide, the number of farmers' markets increased from 2,000 in 1994 to more than 8,600 in 2019, which led to a major problem” (NPR). Weather is also a major factor in why people go to Farmer’s Markets.

“I paid $800 for my tent and it just broke the company is not giving me a new tent or even fixing it for me” - The Pudding Lady
“I have to go to the factory at 5 AM and the van’s battery wasn’t turning out so that's why I’m late today” - Horman’s Best Pickles
“I did a pop-up market and there were 6 other cookie companies there, I am never going back to that market” - Sweet Lady J
“I just did a market in East Hampton and no one was there and no one made their goals” - New Light Breads
The Disadvantages of Selling at Farmer’s Markets
• You need a vehicle to transport your products to the market.
• Farmers’ markets require a lot of labor time
• There can be a lot of competition in the market.
• If you do not like talking directly with customers you will not like selling at farmer's markets.
The Struggles Vendors Have
• Inconvenient market hours
• Limited Transportation
• Not guaranteed on making your goals
• Even if the weather isn't great out the market doesn't cancel and you still have to be there
