Public symposium “Future Action of Science and Policy on Global Chemicals Management towards 2030 Agenda and Beyond”

The public symposium “Future Action of Science and Policy on Global Chemicals Management towards 2030 Agenda and Beyond” was organised in Toyama, Japan on June 13-16, 2022, by three Societies on Environmental Chemicals, Japan Society of Environmental Chemistry (JEC), Japan Society of Endocrine Disruptors Research (JSEDR), and Japan Society of Environmental Toxicology (JSET).

The WSSD 2020 Goal “…by 2020, … chemicals are used and produced in ways that lead to the minimisation of significant adverse effects on human health and the environment, …” set at the World Summit for Sustainable Development 2002, Johannesburg, has long been an ultimate global framework for the management of chemicals in the environment.

Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity

(Stockholm+50) is an international meeting convened by the United Nations General Assembly to be held in Stockholm, Sweden, from 2-3 June 2022.

It commemorates the 50 years since the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, which made the environment a pressing global issue for the first time. Some 122 countries attended, and participants adopted a series of principles on the environment, including the Stockholm Declaration and Action Plan for the Human Environment. UNEP was created as a result of the conference. Mr. Maurice Strong, Secretary General of the 1972 event, said the lasting message from the event was a "realisation that man has come to one of those seminal points in his history where his own activities are the principal determinants of his own future."

NOWPAP presents in the 22nd Global Meeting of the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans

The 22nd Global Meeting of the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans was held in a hybrid format on 25-27 May 2022 in Mahé, Seychelles. Eighteen Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans including NOWPAP and global Multilateral Environmental Agreements representatives attended the meeting.

The meeting was opened by Ms. Susan Gardner, Director of the Ecosystems Division of UNEP, Mr. Flavien Joubert, Minister of Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment, Seychelles, and Mr. Rolph Payet, Executive Secretary of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions. Ms. Gardner highlighted that the meeting provided an opportunity for Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans to exchange views on how to strengthen ocean governance, including contributions to biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ), blue economy, the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework under the CBD, and the UN decade of Ocean Science.
