The George C. Marshall Foundation 2022 Annual Report
Dear Friends,
Throughout this report you see an ascending George C. Marshall Foundation. Emerging from the pandemic, we embarked on our strategy of demonstrating the continued relevance of one of the twentieth century’s most important figures. We welcomed people back to conduct research and be enlightened by first-rate speakers. Not relying solely on traditional programs, we offered events across Virginia and in the new world of livestreaming. Similarly, even as we hosted scholars in our beautiful building, we made significant strides to make our research collections available to a global audience through our new website. In everything we did in 2022—from our publications to our awards gala honoring Condoleezza Rice and Ken Griffin—we used the 75th anniversary of the Marshall Plan to bring attention to the achievements and example of George Catlett Marshall. In a year that saw a land war break out in Europe, the legacy of the architect of victory in the last such conflict and of the peace that followed for 77 years is more relevant than ever.
Last year was an unqualified success. But for us at the Marshall Foundation, past is only precursor. We look forward to 2023 with great excitement. Even as we continue our recent progress, we plan new initiatives including a summer teachers institute to help inspire the next generation with the Marshallian example.
Paul A. Levengood, President
Research Library
After two years of limited access, in 2022 the library reopened to researchers, visitors, and volunteers.
Worldwide access
Our project to make digital images of the Marshall Papers available online got underway in 2022. We led off with the core of the collection, Marshall’s Pentagon correspondence, consisting of thousands of fascinating documents. In addition, library volunteers like Rachel Rowland (right) are engaged in a project to scan our rich photographic collections for use by scholars and students around the world.
Cutting-edge scholarship
Researchers flocked back to the library, including Lt. Col. Thomas Arnold (right), a U.S. Army Goodpaster Scholar and PhD candidate at the University of Virginia. Arnold is researching American perception of the army as well as its public relations effort the leading up to U.S. involvement in World War II.
Our expertise
Word has clearly reached the media about the treasures in the Marshall Foundation’s archival collections. In 2022 staff participated in newspaper, radio, television, and documentary film productions on subjects from the Marshall Plan to codebreaking.
Programs
Saluting America's best
On November 17 we recognized Dr. Condoleezza Rice, 66th U.S. Secretary of State, and Kenneth Griffin, founder and CEO of Citadel, at the George C. Marshall Foundation Awards ceremony in New York City. The evening was part of an ongoing celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Marshall Plan.
A recording of the event, with remarks by Dr. Rice and Mr. Griffin, can be viewed here.
Compelling speakers
After two years of digital events, The Marshall Foundation resumed its popular Legacy Lectures series in-person with nine fascinating talks, viewable at the links below. Established 2015, the series was generously sponsored by Dominion Energy in 2022.
The Pennsylvanian: George C. Marshall and VMI, by Bradley L. Coleman
Against All Odds: Ultimate Courage and Sacrifice in WWII, by Alex Kershaw
Frank McCarthy: The General Who Won an Oscar, by Lt. Col. Jim Dittrich
Marshall and the Birth of the Modern American Battle, by Dr. Mark Grotelueschen
"An Army on Alert": The Cold War Army in Occupied Germany, 1945-55, by Ashley Vance
The Doolittle Raid and Justice for Axis War Crimes, by Michel Paradis
Code Name Arcadia: The First Wartime Conference of Churchill and Roosevelt, by Gen. John F. Shortal
The Christmas Truce from the Men Who Took Part, by Mike Hill
Marshall on the road
We hosted two discussions on the Marshall Plan and its current relevance with President Paul Levengood and Marshall biographer and Foundation trustee David Roll in Richmond and Arlington, Virginia. A recording of the Arlington event can be found here.
Dedication Day
We marked the 58th anniversary of the dedication of the Marshall Foundation building in May with an informal afternoon of activities, including tours of the archive, a trivia contest, and a lecture on “Marshall Man” Frank McCarthy.
Streaming options
In October, we held our first livestreamed event, for the first time making our in-person programming instantly available around the world. Retired professor Frank Settle and Marshall Foundation Communications Director Glen Carpenter discussed the impact of the atomic age on popular music from 1945 to the present, available here.
Giving
2022 was a remarkable fundraising year for the George C. Marshall Foundation with financial support coming from 602 individuals and organizations, including 145 new donors. It’s gratifying to note that the total revenue raised in 2022 represented an 11-year high for the Marshall Foundation. These results were underpinned by a strong annual giving effort and the Marshall Foundation Awards in November.
The revenue raised in 2022 was used to fund the exciting programs included in this annual report and to support our plans for the year ahead.
Our staff and Board of Trustees are tremendously grateful to all our donors for their support (please see a comprehensive donor list below). Whether you are a long-time supporter or new to the Marshall Foundation family, we sincerely appreciate your gifts. With your support, we can continue our mission to preserve and promote the legacy of George C. Marshall.
Donor Spotlight
Paul and Joanne Robblee have given to the Marshall Foundation since 1996 and offered the following thoughts on why they support our important work:
President Harry S. Truman urged the establishment of the George C. Marshall Foundation so that the world would not be permitted to forget the legacy of America’s first five-star general, General of the Army George C. Marshall, VMI ’01, the selfless architect of victory in Europe and Japan in the Second World War. Later, as one of the nation’s greatest statesmen, he would propose what became known as the Marshall Plan for European recovery which prompted the creation of NATO. No less a legacy for future generations are words which General Marshall penned only three months after the end of the war. There he expressed the necessity that America’s young be educated, made “fully informed citizens,” this as essential to ensure “the peace and prosperity of the world.” Indisputably, the breadth of General Marshall’s legacy is of profound importance to the present. This is the work of the Foundation. For us, it is a privilege to be a small part of that worthy endeavor.
Giving Tuesday
The Marshall Foundation had a highly successful #GivingTuesday campaign on November 29, 2022, which included a $10,000 matching gift challenge from Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Robins, Jr., of Richmond. At the conclusion of this effort, 47 donors gave $26,787 to the Marshall Foundation in support of its programs. This was the highest #GivingTuesday total achieved since 2016 when the Marshall Foundation began participating in this annual day of giving campaign.
Grants
In 2022, the Marshall Foundation received grants from six organizations in support of its ongoing capital, programming, and general operating support needs. These competitive grants provided much-needed funds for, among other things, critical repairs to our thirty-year-old roof and to support the ongoing digitization of our collections.
