The House in the Desert
Located in the heart of the Gorafe desert, this unique building in perfectly integrated in this extraordinary natural environment.
A fully glazed and self-sufficient design means this home can withstand the large thermal variations that can reach 30º in a single day, thanks to its thermally insulated windows that prevent heat or cold from passing through, offering a comfortable place from which to enjoy the striking views of the desert and the stars.
A fully equipped home in the middle of the desert to disconnect.
The glass house, one of the attractions of the Gorafe desert, whose 1,400 square kilometres are five times the size of the better known Tabernas desert (Almería), is available for rent. It is located within the Geopark of Granada, declared by Unesco in 2020 and which includes 47 municipalities in the north of the province.
It is thus a fully self-sufficient and eco-friendly home.
The LAYOUT
It comprises 20 square metres distributed in 3 glazed modules.
Along the entire perimeter of the house, there is a small verandah that provides shade and is ideal to sit outside on summer nights and take in the panoramic view of the sky.
One of these modules comprises the bedroom with a large double bed, the second module includes a spacious shower and access to the bathroom which is situated in the centre, and the third module includes a small rest area with a pair of designer armchairs and the entrance to the house.
The glass house was inaugurated in 2018 after being built by Guardian Glass to demonstrate the ability of its glass to regulate temperature even in extreme environments, as the region is characterised by harsh summers and winters.
It was located on the edge of a large gully, overlooking a desert of spectacular scenery in an area famous for a very different way of building: dwellings within the earth, the famous cave houses of nearby Guadix and Gorafe itself.
However, the new owner, David Martinez, has decided to relocate it about two kilometres away from a public road that impeded the privacy of the tourists who rented it.
Among the singularities of the Geopark are the Hoyas de Guadix and Baza, large depressions where these localities are located; offering a record of sediments and fossils from the last five million years, especially from the Quaternary; and the highest concentration of dolmens, a total of 272, in the same area of Spain.
The arid nature of the region, with little vegetation cover on the slopes of the valleys, favours the observation of the main geological values.
Thanks to the deep erosion of the rivers, all the geological periods, with their respective epochs, from the Triassic to the Quaternary, have been exposed in the valleys of the Geopark.
“LOS COLORAOS” GORAFE DESERT
This desert is unique for its striking beauty, scenery and geology, full of colours, gullies, fairy chimneys and deep ravines. It’s ideal if you want to take spectacular photographs and enjoy the silence. You can explore it by bicycle or 4WD vehicle.
