Campbell Law celebrates Black History Month
To kickoff the monthlong celebration, students were encouraged to take a walk through history by visiting BLSA's "Black Voices in Law" display in front of the Commons. BLSA also hosted a kickoff cookout that included dancing to a drum circle, among other events. Campbell Law’s competitive trial advocacy program has once again been graded as one of the best in the country by preLaw Magazine in its Winter 2023 issue. The accolade marks Campbell Law’s sixth consecutive appearance on the annual list since 2017. The law school received a graded score of A again this year and is the only law school in North Carolina to make this year’s list. Learn more at this link.
Four Times a Charm: Campbell Law advocates win ACB 4th Circuit Moot Court Competition
For the fourth year in a row, Campbell Law advocates have won the American College of Bankruptcy (ACB) Fourth Circuit Moot Court Competition. The team, proudly coached by Margaret Westbrook and Anna Osterhout, will compete in the 31st annual Duberstein Moot Court Competition on March 4-6 in New York. Campbell Law advocates sweep regionals, advance to 48th annual National Trial Competition (NTC)
After sweeping the National Trial Competition (NTC) – Region V, which was hosted by Campbell Law and sponsored by by Ward and Smith PA, Poyner Spruill LLP and Hutchens law firms, two teams of Campbell Law advocates are advancing to the 8th annual National Trial Competition (NTC) on March 29-April 2 in San Antonio, Texas. Campbell Law advocates win NBLSA Regionals, head to national competition
Campbell Law advocates are heading back to the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) competition after winning the final round of the BLSA Constance Baker Motley Regional Mock Trial Competition in Orlando, Florida. The team of third-year law students Tiqeece Brown, Sarah Mills, Niayai Lavien and Nikkia Jacques will compete in Washington, D.C., at the end of March. Mary Ann Matney ’17 named new director of Competitive Advocacy Program
Mary Ann Matney ’17 has been named the new Director of Competitive Advocacy for Campbell Law School, Dean J. Rich Leonard has announced. Matney, a well-decorated advocate, will take over Campbell Law’s award-winning program, which is currently being run by Interim Director Dan Tilly, who also serves as the law school’s Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Campbell Law again ranks among most devout Christian law schools
Campbell Law has been ranked once again among the most devout Christian law schools in the nation by preLaw magazine, a National Jurist publication, in its Spring 2023 edition. Every two years, preLaw magazine spotlights the country’s “Most Devout Law Schools.” Campbell Law, which is among the 46 law schools in the U.S. that have ties to faith, has been ranked 16th in recognition of its devoutness, which is determined by how much emphasis a school places on religion in its curriculum, faculty makeup and daily campus life. 2023 Spring Fellows chosen for ABA Legal Education Police Practices Consortium
Campbell Law students Sarah Varela ’24 and Jaden Grimes ’24 have been selected as the school’s Spring 2023 Fellows for the ABA Legal Education Police Practices Consortium, Dean J. Rich Leonard announced. The Consortium is a collaborative effort between the American Bar Association (ABA) and 60 accredited law schools to gather data and evaluate the evolving nature of police work in the United States. Professor Rick Glazier honored by NC Bar, joins PBS NC political show, State Lines
Campbell Law’s Blanchard Community Law Clinic (BCLC) newly appointed Director Rick Glazier was honored by the North Carolina Bar on Feb. 19 for his service to the N.C. Justice Center. As part of Campbell Law‘s Pro Bono Project efforts, members of the Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project (IRRP) partnered with the North Carolina Asian Americans Together (NCAAT), Muslim Women For and Montagnard Human Rights to help host a citizenship clinic on Feb. 25 in downtown Raleigh. Blanchard Community Law Clinic hosts expunction event
Campbell Law’s Blanchard Community Law Clinic (BCLC) served 46 residents of Wake County at a free expunction event on Saturday, Feb. 25. In an effort to provide residents with a second chance, law students and their supervising attorneys met at the Wake County Courthouse in downtown Raleigh to work with clients to help expunge charges from their criminal records. Attorneys at the clinic, run by Clinical Professor Emily Mistr, included Tolu Adewale, BCLC Director Rick Glazier and Quisha Mallette of the N.C. Justice Center. Also at the clinic for discussions with staff and students were Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman, Founder and Executive Director of Community Success Initiative (CSI) Dennis Gaddy and members of his staff and staff and board members of Step-Up Ministry, a valued community partner. The petitions are being entered into the E-file system this week in Wake County and other counties as required, Glazier said. Learn more at this link.
Campbell Law hosted a session of the North Carolina Court of Appeals on Monday, Feb. 27, in the Boyce Courtroom. The presiding judges for this session were made up of Campbell Law alumni — Chief Judge Donna Stroud ‘88, Judge John Tyson ‘79 and Judge Michael Stading ’06. Learn more at this link.
Campbell Law is competing in the 2023 North Carolina Legal Feeding Frenzy — a “food and fund” drive competition among all North Carolina law firms, law schools and organizations to assist Feeding The Carolinas’ Food Banks that runs from March 1-31. “Campbell Law is the reigning champion, and we will be competing to hold that title for the third consecutive year,” says Pro Bono Council Director Brigitte Kelly ’23. Campbell Law Review will host its annual symposium, “The Chilling Impact on First Amendment Rights and #MeToo after Depp v. Heard,” on the evening of Thursday, March 30. The 2023 symposium, which will be held at Jitti in downtown Raleigh, will focus on the legal and cultural implications of the Depp v. Heard defamation trial, according to organizers.
