Week 3

Times Tables - Near the end of the year, the children will take part in their times tables test. We have made sure we keep some time each day to practise these. We do this by singing them, chanting them and answering times tables questions. The past two weeks we have focused on our 8 times tables. We play ‘Around the World’ where the children compete against each other to answer questions the quickest in order to be the winner.
Music - This week, we have been learning to play the glockenspiel. The tune we play on the glockenspiel will pair with our singing as we have also been learning to sing ‘Rock Around the Clock’
Maths - This week in maths, we have been learning to round to the nearest 10, 100 and even 1000! This is a very tricky concept, so we used the whiteboards to support us. For example, if we had to round the number 37, we drew a number line and wrote the 10 before and after the number before deciding which 10 the number was closest to.
Geography - This week we have been learning all about volcanoes and earthquakes. We looked at how volcanoes are formed and the pros and cons of living near a volcano. We then looked at how earthquakes happen and designed earthquake proof homes.
On Friday, we created our own island that had its very own volcano, which we decided to call Mount Sunrise! We worked together to create different things on our island such as a farm for crops, houses, a school and lots more. Our volcano had recently erupted and caused lots of damage. The children drew something that was affected by the eruption such as a damaged home and wrote a few sentences describing how they felt that their home had been destroyed.
The children were super confident in playing their roles in front of each other!
It has been so lovely to see the children taking their learning outside of the classroom! They came to show me some volcanoes they had made at lunch time out of sand 🌋

Thank you for reading our class blog 🙂
