Sustainable Nitrogen Resolution
On 2nd of March 2022, during the second part of the 5th United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA5.2) UN Member States made an historic commitment in Nairobi by adopting the second Resolution on Sustainable Nitrogen Management (UNEP/EA.5/Res.2).
This second Resolution is important because it includes both an ambition to “significantly reduce nitrogen waste globally” and also a timeline “by 2030 and beyond".

Open Call for International Nitrogen Assessment (INA) Peer Reviewers
The INA chapters are now nearing completion, and we are entering the peer review stage. We want to ensure that the INA chapters are high quality, comprehensive, clear, scientifically sound, and robust. To that end, we are seeking a diverse range of peer reviewers with nitrogen expertise.
The INA summarizes the key findings from the International Nitrogen Management System project. The book is made up of 29 chapters that are organized into 5 parts:
- The global nitrogen challenge: Problem definition
- Foundations for assessing the nitrogen cycle
- Global integrated assessment across the nitrogen cycle
- Nitrogen challenges and opportunities for key world regions
If you are interested in being a peer review for one of the INA chapters, please email inms@ceh.ac.uk by 1st of June 2022.

World Water Day 2022
Nitrogen is everywhere and invisible, including having an immense impact on our water systems.
Currently global-economy-wide nitrogen use is very inefficient, with a large proportion of anthropogenic reactive nitrogen lost to the environment. This excess nitrogen has severe impacts on species composition in terrestrial, freshwater and coastal ecosystems, with cascading effects on biodiversity, soil, water and air quality, ecosystem function and human well-being.
Protecting our groundwaters starts with Nitrogen.

The XXI International N Workshop
24th - 28th October 2022, Madrid
The ambitious goal of halving nitrogen waste by 2030 requires important coordination of many actors: multidisciplinary scientists, farmers, industry, policy-makers, NGOs, and consumers. The XXI International N Workshop will contribute to this challenge by welcoming contributions dealing with different spatial scales (from the plot to global) and system scopes (crop, livestock, agroforestry, forestry, urban and agro-food systems).
Special sessions include:
- Policy strategies for reducing N waste
- Remote sensing for N optimization and precision agriculture
- Costs and benefits for halving N waste by 2030
- N and circular economy - The role of affected stakeholders
Abstract submission closes June 20th.
