The mind is an enigma, filled with an accumulation of thoughts, secrets, and feelings that nobody but yourself can fathom. The perplexity of the human mind is something I couldn’t help but explore, instigating myself to dive deep into my own. My mind has always been a muddle of everything, occasionally turning everything I think about into a haze. In To Be Fathomed, I illustrated the dark, murky parts of my mind that couldn’t be explained using writing. By using dramatic lighting, color, black and white, and the overlaying of images, I constructed a sequence that depicts my mind, in the way I perceive it.
About the Artist
Michelle Zhong is a 16 year old Chinese-American artist born and raised in New York City. She is currently a junior attending Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School. Her interest in photography stemmed from her difficulties in finding how to express her art, often feeling bound to the societal norms of traditional art. She wants to pursue photography in the near future, hoping to continue it in her college career. Outside of photography, Michelle has other passions, such as ceramics, interior design, and badminton.
This project was created in Future Imagemakers in the NYU Department of Photography and Imaging at Tisch School of the Arts in Spring 2023.
