Scripture: Hebrews 10
The old system of atonement
Hebrews 10:1-5
- Adam and Eve brought sin into the world by disobeying God
- Blood sacrifices were used to atone for the sins daily, weekly, monthly, and annually
These repetitive sacrifices, the blood of bulls and goats, were impossible to take away sins (Heb 10:4)
Requirement for the new system
Perfect Obedience
Then I said "look, I have come to do Your will, O God - as it is written about me in scriptures" (v7)
- Before our sacrifice can be anything to God, obedience must come first
- God desires perfect obedience, and obedience count as righteousness (Deut. 6:25)
- A sacrifice made from righteousness is pleasing and acceptable unto God
- God found perfect obedience to His will in the person and work of Jesus Christ
Sacrifice
To accomplish the will of God (for man to be blameless and to have a relationship with their Creator), Christ had to die in the flesh as a blood sacrifice
- Jesus is the word of God and God's word cannot die, therefore, God Himself prepared a body for Christ.
- He provided the lamb just as in Abraham's faith sacrifice.
- The only pleasing sacrifice is the one God Himself provides.
John 1:1 -In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God; 14 -So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son
The significance of Jesus's sacrifice
Sanctification (v10-14)
We are made Holy upon belief, but to continue staying holy is a process (v11)
- The act for us to be made sanctified is completed, but the sanctification itself is progressive (v14)
- Progressive sanctification without the repetitive act of sacrifice
New Covenant (v15-17)
- I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds
- No longer need for more sacrifices as sin offering (v18)
Access to God (v19-21)
- His death opened up the way into the presence of God.
- The moment He died the curtain to the Most Holy Place was torn from top to bottom, and there is no longer any veil between God and His people (Matt. 27:51)
§ 19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God…..
Cleansing through Relationship (v22-36)
- Draw near to God since nothing prevents us anymore
- Jesus is the High Priest who cleanses by sprinkling our hearts (with blood NLT version - Leviticus 4 -5 The high priest will then take some of the bull’s blood into the Tabernacle, 6 dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the Lord in front of the inner curtain of the sanctuary. 7 The priest will then put some of the blood on the horns of the altar for fragrant incense that stands in the Lord’s presence inside the Tabernacle. He will pour out the rest of the bull’s blood at the base of the altar for burnt offerings at the entrance of the Tabernacle)
- And washes our body with pure water (the word - Ephesians 5 -25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[b] her by the washing with water through the word,)
- To be able to obtain the qualities of God's Spirit, and become more like Him
The Return of Jesus as the sovereign king of glory (v36-39)
He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await Him" (9:28)
