Nitrogen Resolutions on the agenda of recent UNEP CPR-159 meeting

A hybrid meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives took place in Nairobi on the 29th of September. It featured a presentation by UNEP on the progress made so far and next steps in the implementation of the two UNEA resolutions on Sustainable Nitrogen Management (4/14, 5/2).

UNEP will appoint Co-Chairs for the UNEP Working Group on Nitrogen based on the nominations received from Member States. Meetings of this Working Group will be planned in consultation with the Co-Chairs. Member States were also encouraged to nominate national focal points to join the Working Group.

Moreover, Prof Mark Sutton Director of the GEF/UNEP International Nitrogen Management System (INMS) project provided a statement on behalf of UKCEH in which he highlighted the urgent need to accelerate actions for sustainable nitrogen management in the light of the massively increased fertilizer prices, which could strengthen economy and environment at the same time.

Our Phosphorus Future

The OPF report is the culmination of four years of collaboration (from 2017 to 2021) by over 100 scientist and industry experts from around the globe and was written by 40 authors from 17 countries. It is a response to the critical need to progress sustainable phosphorus use and is in support of the call made through the Helsinki Declaration.

Outputs of the project include the OPF Report and additional summary for policymakers. These include the ten key actions to improve sustainable phosphorus management globally and an ‘aspirational goal for phosphorus’.

The OPF report is a landmark publication in the effort to achieve sustainable nutrient management and a huge step forward in addressing the challenges related to phosphorus flows.
