Term 1, week 7

PE: VR dodgeball
On Tuesday, we had a really exciting PE lesson! We had a special visit from staff at NUFC to deliver a virtual reality dodgeball session. The children played in groups of three and battled against one another on a virtual dodgeball game. The rest of the class were able to watch the game on the screen. It was great fun, even Mr Walker and Mr Gray had a go!
Art: Mixed media cave painting
As part of our drama for learning, we created a cave painting of our journey from Doggerland to Skara Brae. This was competed as a mixed media project because we explored different materials to create our final piece.
Firstly, the class used charcoal to create a background in their sketchbook. They had to grind the charcoal up into a powder and then spread it across their page.
After, we went outside to explore the different colours that we can make using our natural surroundings - just as they would of done in the Stone Age!
We came back inside and recorded the different materials we used to create our colours.
The next lesson, everyone spent time using paint and oil pastels to create natural colours. This was an experimental process to see what worked well as a background colour.
Then everyone made the background for their final piece, using natural colours of chalk. We held the chalk sideways and rubbed it against the textured paper to create the best effect.
While we let our backgrounds, the class drafted their cave painting story in their sketchbook. Everyone followed the story of our journey but could put their own spin on it!
Finally, everyone used charcoal to draw their draft story onto the background they had created. This required a lot of concentration to use the materials correctly. The final cave paintings were fantastic!
Use and apply: Maths and science
From our science experiment in the previous week, we created a table of results. This is a tricky skill to learn and we will continue to practice throughout the year.
Use and apply: English and science
As part of our English lessons this week, we were learning about recount writing. By the end of the week, we wrote a recount of our most recent science experiment. Firstly we wrote one as a class in third person. Then the children worked in different groups to rewrite the recount in first person.
Drama for learning: History and science
On Friday morning, we had a carousel of activities relating to our history and science topics. We were archaeologists who had discovered some artefacts and fossils at an excavation site in northern Scotland.
The excavation site had been laid out for the class for when they came back from break time. They firstly had a little explore of the site on their own, using the magnifying glasses. There were some fantastic conversations occurring as they investigated. We then came together as a class to go through the different activities.
This activity was sorting different resources. The children had to decide if they were either primary or secondary sources. They then had some time to look at different books about the Stone Age.
For this activity, the children had to sort different rocks and fossils into the layers of soil.
One of the most popular activities was our fossil digging! The children worked in pairs and used special tools to try and find their own fossil - it was a lot harder than it looks!
Working in smaller groups, the children got to explore the excavation site in greater detail. They had to sort the fossils into their different groups and discover which were just rocks.
Three tables at the back were for the children to complete an activity of ordering images and writing how fossils were formed. We had all watched a video about this process and it helped support the children’s understanding while completing the other activities.
