The CallowAy Dean’s Memo.03 September 12-16

The Calloway Dean’s Memo serves to provide community wide updates, events, and student highlights at your fingertips. There will be follow up communication from our administration team to reinforce community commitments and expectations.

On behalf of the Cab Calloway School of the Arts community, we take this moment to honor and remember the heroes and families impacted by the events of 9/11/01. We will take a moment of silence to remember all of those impacted but specifically we’re residents of Delaware:

  • Jon Richard Grabowski
  • Davis Grier Sezna Jr.
  • Matthew Flocco
  • Robert John Fangman
  • Robert Peraza
  • Richard Stewart Jr.

iReady Testing

The iReady diagnostic test in Reading (Grades 6-9) and Math (Grades 6-8 and Grade 9 Algebra) will take place the week of September 6th. Testing sessions are approximately 30-minutes in length over two class sessions.

What is i-Ready?

i-Ready is an online program that will help determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows teachers to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform instruction. Culture and Climate Updates

From the desk of Dr. Dawn Downes

Last week all students attended and Expectations Assembly with Dean Bolden, Dr. Warshany, and Dr. Downes. During the assembly, we shared this slide deck. After sharing the Cab Calloway vision, mission, and core values, we shared our expectations with students regarding our most common discipline infractions from last year – students being late to class and students with other attendance issues (such as skipping class or loitering in unauthorized areas).

In addition, we reviewed the new dress code guidelines from the Red Clay School Board, and the cell phone policy. Our intention was to share expectations so that our community starts strong with the same expectations that are understood by everyone. Click on the link below to review expectations and Calloway Behavior Matrix.

In addition to the Red Clay Student Handbook and Code of Conduct, students also reviewed the Cab Calloway Student and Family Handbook. It reviews information specific to Cab Calloway School of the Arts. If you have questions, please direct them to Dr. Downes or Dr. Warshany.

Student Extracurricular Activities

Clubs and after school activities will be starting up over the next two weeks. The current list of activities is at the link below. The administration will be working with club advisors to finalize meeting days and times, so check the list often as it will be updated daily as we receive confirmation from club advisors that the club will continue to meet this year and the schedule is created.

If parents are not able to provide transportation home for students after and after school activity, we do have an after school activity bus that will pick up students at 4:30 PM and take them to hub stops throughout the district. If your student needs to ride the activity bus, review the bus stops at this link. They will not be the same bus stop your child rides to and from school, and your child needs to know which activity stop they will use when they get on the bus at 4:30 PM.

Additionally, the time that the student arrives at the hub stop depends on how many students are riding the bus and if any stops may be skipped.

We have many opportunities for parents to make Cab a Community of Care.
