Note from our Head

Dear Oakfield families,

In a week of competitive contests for Oakfield in netball, football, skiing(!) and on the cusp of the RBC 2022: Virtual Race for the Kids (see below) I wanted to touch on Sport in my message this week.

Sport and physical exercise was one of the activities hit hardest by the pandemic. It has been so fantastic to see sport squad matches return in 2021 and continue the brilliant momentum in 2022; from matches against local schools on our own playground or Rosendale Playing Fields to ISA and National Championships in places much further afield.

Thank you to our Sports Department and also the Oakfield parents and carers who make such an incredible effort to get the children where they need to be, keep them motivated, cheer them on from the sidelines, and congratulate their efforts whether it be in victory or defeat.

Have wonderful weekends,

Moyra Thompson

U9 Netball with Eaton House and The Manor

ALL of our Year 4 girls enjoyed playing their first match for the season. After a rainy start the sunshine broke through and the play heated up and read the excellent match report from Dani below!

RBC 2022: Virtual Race for the Kids.

This term we have decided that Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity will be our chosen charity. To help support the amazing work they do, we will be taking part in the RBC 2022: Virtual Race for the Kids.

Next week children in Years 1 - 6 will be running in their PE/Games lessons as our way of taking part, and staff will also be getting involved!

YEAR 6

In Year 6 Science, we have been learning about how light travels. We experimented with convex and concave lenses, as well as using pin hole cameras to show how our eyes really see images upside down.

YEAR 4

This half term, Year 4’s learning focus is on colour. They are exploring primary, secondary and tertiary colours and discovering tints and tones. What better artist to study than Friedrich Stowasser, (1928 – 2000), or Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser as he is better known. Hundertwasser was an Austrian artist and architect, whose love of colour and exploration of form is legendary.

The children began this project by creating their own colours using powder paint. The Art Studio is like a science laboratory at the moment, with children mixing and stirring and exclaiming in joy when they discover a new colour. This has sparked new conversations about which colours ‘go together’ and an introduction to the term ‘complimentary colours’ that really ‘pop’ when placed next to each other. It has been fun making up new names for the colours the children have discovered, they can’t quite believe it is even possible to make so many!

YEAR 3

Year 3 have been exploring the art of the Russian artist, Wassily Kandinsky. Did you know the shapes and colours in Kandinsky's work represent sound? Once the children had used tools to draw their own abstract shape pictures, we decided to combine our shapes, colours and sounds using Chrome Music Lab! I wonder what Kandinsky would make of our compositions?

YEAR 2

BBC watch out!

Year 2 became interviewers for the morning. They posed questions to characters from Alice in Wonderland.

The practised the skill of open-ended questions.

‘White Rabbit why were you late for the tea party?’
‘What did you do when you fell down the dark hole, Alice?’
‘Why do you have that cheeky grin on your face, Cheshire Cat?’

In Science the children sorted natural materials into groups and understood that some natural materials are altered and changed.

Year 2 worked collaboratively during Maths to understand Place Value. The children had fun using concrete materials to represent 2- and 3-digit numbers! Super work Year 2!

In Humanities the children used an atlas to find countries and their capital cities.

‘Wow, Miss Duncan, look at all the blue, there is so much water!’ Scarlett

YEAR 1

1SP were excited to go to the brand new Pre-Prep Library this week and found lots of great books and places to sit among the forest!

And do check out 1SP's song on online safety on our Oakfield Prep Instagram page!

In English, the children have been learning what a question is and how to use a question mark correctly. We read the story ‘How the Elephant got his trunk’. The children were encouraged to think of questions they would like to ask different animals and practise writing them. e.g. Why does the Hare have long ears?

UPPER FOUNDATION

The children were so adept at using the iPads this week to supplement their learning and boost their digital skills.

LOWER FOUNDATION

Within the classroom we have lots of activities linking to the colour monster including exercises around pencil control. The children were so much more confident with the tripod grip by the end of the exercise. Well done!

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

LEGO Club

This week in Lego Club we had fun making Robots.

Everyone's Robot had a different job. Some cleaned the house and some made the bedrooms untidy!!!

Great perseverance Lego clubbers!

Drawing in Early Birds Club

A fierce start to the day! An excellent drawing of a dinosaur enjoying its breakfast done in Early Birds Club this week. Get your skills started early and come to Early Birds Club from 7.40am at the Prep Hall.

COMPOSER OF THE WEEK

Dear musical (theatre) musers,

This week's Composer of the Week requires little in the way of introduction, as they are right at the top of their game. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a Hollywood powerhouse, composing works for over 50 soundtracks. He's most famous for his hit musical, 'Hamilton', and his contributions to the Disney canon. Whilst Hamilton is PG in its lyrics and subject matter, so won't be shared below, his soundtracks to both Moana and Encanto are irresistible; their lead songs being earworms of the highest order, especially a certain unmentionable song about a character that we don't talk about. Some of the highlights are the quieter moments, when Miranda tugs a the heart strings, lending weight to whatever scenes his melodies accompany.

Enjoy some clips below of his compositions and/or performances, and remember: you're never too old to sing along.
