Extreme Heat this Weekend

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for the Labor Day weekend. This is particularly dangerous for those more vulnerable to hot weather. The best defense against heat-related illness is to stay hydrated, find cool places to spend your days, and wear light-colored clothing if you have to go outside. Consider adapting any plans that have you outdoors during the day.

Also, California ISO recently announced a flex alert. It is likely that there will be more flex alerts during the upcoming weekend. The ISO website is urging the conservation of electricity due to extreme heat. During the Flex Alert consumers are urged to avoid the use of major appliances and turn off unnecessary lighting. Reducing energy use during the critical time period stabilizes the power grid and may prevent emergency measures, such as power outages.

Register for Zotts to Tots Family Fun Run and Bike Race

Back by popular demand, Zotts to Tots will be held on Saturday, September 17 at 10 am, followed by the Town Picnic from 11 am to 3 pm.

Zotts to Tots is a family fun run for runners and bikers of all ages. It starts at Rossotti's Alpine Inn and goes 2.4 miles up Alpine Road, down Portola Road to just before Portola Valley Town Center.

Zotts to Tots has been a Portola Valley tradition for over 20 years. Does anyone remember what it was called before it was Zotts to Tots?

We also still need volunteers along the race route. If you are interested you can learn more here.

Public Open Houses: Hawthorns Area Plan

The Hawthorns Area is a 79-acre property that is part of Windy Hill Open Space Preserve located within the Town of Portola Valley and owned by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen). The property is currently closed to the public.

Midpen is offering both in-person and virtual public open houses this fall to introduce more people to the project. Please drop by either session to connect with Midpen staff and share your input.

In 2021, Midpen initiated a multiyear process to develop the Hawthorns Area Plan, which will establish resource management goals, identify long-term land management activities and introduce ecologically sensitive public access to the Hawthorns Area. Midpen is now collecting information to characterize existing conditions at the Hawthorns Area and hopes to receive public input on key considerations for the property. Based on the information received, Midpen would identify priorities for long-term management of the property.

In the early twentieth century, Portola Valley became a place of small farms and large estates. Immigrants from Ireland, Portugal, Croatia, Italy, China, the Philippines, Chile, and Germany joined the Californios to raise strawberries, herd cattle and cut firewood. The large landowners came from San Francisco to escape the summer fog. A few were year round residents.
