Corruption in Football

An insight into the dark arts of the footballing realm

By Thiseas Zabetakis and Shane Fahy

Corruption in FIFA ( Thiseas Zabetakis )

Football is the biggest sport and sports industry in the world and at the head of it is an organization by the name of FIFA.

Founded on the 21st May 1904, FIFA was first thought as a non-profit organization created to promote the game of football.

One of the first glimpses of corruption and controversy in FIFA was when João Havelange was president.

João Havelange brought a lot of good but will be forever linked to corruption. To help him win the election to become FIFA president rumors spread that he sent brown envelopes to the football executives of many of the African countries bribing them and promising to them to develop football in the 3rd world countries. When he won the presidency election immediately FIFA started selling rights to sponsors including Adidas, Coca Cola and many more. FIFA used this money to develop football in the 3rd world and grew the game massively. The 1978 World Cup was filled with controversy. Argentina was recently taken over by a military dictatorship. There were huge riots and movement to boycott the games but in the end no country ended up following through with their threats. The final was held in River Plate's Monumental Stadium only a mile away from the infamous Higher School of Mechanics of the Navy which held concentration camp prisoner's captive who reportedly could hear the roars of the crowd from the stadium.

For the 1982 World Cup in Spain Adidas ensured all rights by paying large sums of money and Adolf Dassler, owner of Adidas, was paying Havelange private payments, in other words bribing him.

Sepp Blatter( and no not where your urine is stored) was appointed as FIFA’s general secretary in 1981. His dream was to once take over as president of the organization. As Havelange lived in Brazil he would only fly over and checkup once every 6 weeks. This meant Sepp Blatter could do whatever he liked. One day one of Adolf Dassler’s private payments to Havelange ended up going to Sepp Blatter instead. This was the evidence Blatter needed to be able to blackmail Havelange into stepping down from President.

Havelange announced that he would step down from presidency in 1998. This was Sepp Blatter's opportunity to fulfill his dream. He had to make sure he won the next election.

A key man in the FIFA elections was Jack Warner. He was President of CONCACAF, The Confederation of North, Central American and Carribean football. Each country gets one vote in the election and due to all the Caribbean countries, if u want to win the election you have to win CONCACAF.

All the Carribean islands listened to Jack Warner as he had developed football greatly in the poorer regions. Sepp understood he had to win Jack Warner over if he had any chance of becoming president. Sepp ended up bribing Jack Warner for him to vote for Blatter in the election.

A few months before the election Blatter and his team realized he is still very far behind Lennart Johansson and still needed to win over many countries. Sepp targeted Africa next in his search for more votes. Another way to bribe people instead of cash in hand is to promise them something in return. Sepp Blatter promised South Africa a World Cup in return for all of the southern African countries’ votes.

Just a few dates before the election Johansson was still very confident in winning as he still thought he had CONCACAF and the south of Africa behind him.

Blatter had a massive lead after the first count of votes in which Johansson then withdrew knowing full well he was fighting a losing battle. Blatter became president of FIFA and gave Africa their promised World Cup.

Since then there have been many cases of corruption in FIFA including the two most recent World Cups held in Russia and Qatar. In 2015 seven then-current FIFA officials were arrested on the 27th of May in Hotel Baur au Lac in Zurich. The U.S. Department of Justice disclosed a 47-count, 164-page criminal indictment charging seven FIFA executives with having received $150 million in bribes over a period of more than two decades. Sepp Blatter got banned from any FIFA activities and will remain banned until 2027.

Corruption in UEFA ( Shane Fahy )

During the sports existence the game has developed into a completely new sport. New teams, tactics and most importantly competitions have been added to the modern game. The biggest of these competitions are the Champions League and the international tournaments of The Euros and the famed World Cup. Apart from competitions, football leagues for each respective country also bring in insanely large amount of revenue and viewers from all over the world, the biggest of these leagues being the Premier League (England), La Liga (Spain), Bundesliga (Germany) and the Serie A (Italy). These leagues host the biggest and most successful teams in the world and due to their success, the Champions League was formed. The Champions League was created for all the best teams in the top 6 leagues to battle it out to become champions of Europe. This has led to some of the most memorable moments in football history and due to the success of the competition it was bound to have an ounce of Corruption in it from the beginning. All the teams that play on this competition make hundreds maybe even a billion euros per season due to merchandise sales, ticket sales, sponsorships and competition progress. Teams are paid money for qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and The Conference League. Champions League paying the most and the Conference League paying the least. Although it would seem that the large amount of money per season spent by UEFA on the teams would be a loss but instead it makes them millions. When clubs with bigger fanbases play each other in the Champions League, the clubs and UEFA make more money from streaming rights, sponsorships etc. Not all games in the Champions League are blockbuster games and UEFA supposedly add a hint of randomness to the R016 draws which is the stage after the group stage but it can very clearly be seen as some as match fixing to have big teams play each other to make UEFA more money. For example, Real Madrid and Liverpool are easily two of the biggest if not the biggest clubs in their respective leagues and in the past 3 years Liverpool have drawn them twice in their RO16 draws, this can either be told as bad luck or match fixing. Another reason this statement could be supported is how the lower quality teams in the Champions League such as Club Brugge this season drew Benfica. It leaves a fair amount of suspicion that all the big teams in the competition such as PSG and Bayern Munich drew each other, Dortmund and Chelsea, AC Milan and Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid and Liverpool. This is either complete coincidence but these types of draws have been happening for some time. Another reason that this case may be true is that the upper management of UEFAs hands are not very clean, in 2021 ex FIFA bosses Platini and Blatter were charged with corruption charges, although they were both found not guilty it does beg the question do any of the other higher-ups in UEFA and FIFA also commit scandals.

Europa League Knockouts

A biased United fan's take on Thursday nights

By Jack Hannon

Last 16 Play Offs

Manchester United v Barcelona: Game of the Tournament

Manchester United came out on top in a close two-legged game. They won 4-3 on aggregate after a 2-2 draw at the Camp Nou and a 2-1 win at Old Trafford. Marcos Alonso gave Barcelona the lead in the first leg before Marcus Rashford and a Jules Kounde own goal gave Manchester United the lead. Manchester United looked set to take a 2-1 lead back to Old Trafford before a Raphinha wonder strike drew Barcelona level. The second leg kicked off after Barcelona were awarded an early penalty, which Robert Lewandowski calmly put in the top corner. Barcelona went into half time with a 1-0 lead, and a 3-2 overall. Manchester United started the second half strong, with Fred striking a volley to level up( and not level up in Super Mario) the tie again. They looked set for extra time, when Antony smashed a volley into the back of the net to give Manchester United the win. Manchester United will now face Real Betis in the last 16 of the competition.

Sporting CP v Arsenal

Arsenal are favourites for this game as they are on top form and sit top of the Premier League, compared to Sporting who sit fourth in Liga Nos.

Union Berlin v Union Saint-Gilloise

Union Berlin are favourites for this game as they are having one of their best ever seasons and are currently third place in the Bundesliga, just 3 points off top, compared to Union Saint-Gilloise who are 10 points off the top in the Belgian Pro League.

Bayer Leverkusen v Ferencvaros

Bayer Leverkusen are favourites for this game as although ferencvaros are 16 points clear in the Hungarian league, Leverkusen should be too much for them to handle.

Roma v Real Sociedad

This is the tightest contest of the lot, but Real Sociedad will be slight favourites for this tie. They sit third in La Liga while Roma are fifth in Serie A.

Shakhtar Donetsk v Feyenoord

This is going to be another tight game, but Feyenoord will be slight favourites going into this game. They sit top of the Eredivisie compared to Shakhtar, who are 2nd in the Ukranian Premier League.

Champions League Predictions

A Chelsea man's views on the games to come

By Calum Brewer

With the draw of the champions league now completed here are my predictions for how the Quarter Finals will turn out.

Benfica vs Inter Milan: My prediction for this game is that Benfica will come through victorious after a class performance against Club Brugge scoring 7 goals over two legs. Milan have looked shaky( and no not a protein shake) so far in the competition after only scraping a 1-0 win against Porto which is why my prediction is a 3-1 win to Benfica on aggregate.

Bayern Munich vs Manchester City: After a stunning performance by Manchester City in the Ro16 its hard not to see them qualify for the Semis although Bayern Munich just beat the competition favorites 3-0 making it hard to count them out. My prediction for this game is 4-3 to Man City.

Napoli vs AC Milan: Two Italian giants playing each other but Napoli have the edge as they won 5-0 in their last game and are cruising to league success in the Serie A. AC Milan have the better European record but my prediction is 3-1 Napoli.

Real Madrid vs Chelsea: Real Madrid are the new favorites for the competition and are on incredible form after dismantling Liverpool in the Ro16. Chelsea scraping a narrow comeback against Dortmund has given fans some hope for the next round. I do not think Graham Potter has the skill needed to knock out European Giants Madrid and see the game finishing 4-2 Madrid.

Easter Eggs: A Review

Chocolate connoisseurs rank Easter Eggs

By Jack Hannon and Calum Brewer

Cadbury – Cadbury originated in 1824 and has mastered the art of the Easter Egg. Other companies such as Mars and Nestle do not even come close to Cadburys, especially the Mini Eggs Easter Egg which I have crowned as the number 1 egg of all time. Cadburys also have created masterpieces such as Twirls, Crunchie, Oreo and many more making Cadbury in my opinion the company with the best Easter Eggs ever.

Nestle – Nestle are not considered a top dog competitor when compared to Cadburys with its only strong contenders being Milkybar and Smarties. Although I do think the Milkybar egg outranks any egg Mars has to offer, which some may disagree with, but those people are wrong.

Mars – Bounty, Malteser, M&M’s, Mars, Snickers, Twix and Galaxy are all eggs that are made by Mars. With Malteser being an iconic egg and Bounty being one of the most underrated eggs, Mars has a strong selection of eggs. Mars chocolate is noticeably different from its strongest contenders Cadbury. The Mars chocolate is thicker with a more chocolate taste than Cadbury, which can be very thin and milky. The scrumptious taste you get from eating a Mars easter egg is unmatched by any other brand and is the best tasting chocolate egg on the market.( and not the fifa transfer market)

Kinder - Kinder is an iconic brand and makes great tasting chocolate, but they have never really been considered as an Easter egg. Even though the Easter egg is a good tasting egg, it doesn’t really give you what you look for in an Easter egg. When you think of an Easter egg, you think of a hollow, milk chocolate egg and this isn't what Kinder gives you.

Final Ranking:

  1. Mars
  2. Cadbury
  3. Kinder
  4. Nestle

Events of the match:

PBC started the game off with a first minute try from their winger Tom Coughlan who broke through Munchin's backline to score a try to the left of the posts.( and no he is not a postman) Ben O'Connor was able to convert making the score 7-0 for a good start for PBC.

At the midpoint of the first half PBC took a quick tap penalty and were able to get the ball through the hands and Gene O'Leary was able to find a gap in the Munchin's defence and score a try, with Ben O'Connor's conversion to make it 14-0 in the first half.

Munchin's replied with a needed try from Matt de Pou. With a beautiful chip over a PBC defender and kicking the ball back up to score a try in the corner. Unfortunately Cillian O'Connor was unable to convert the try as his kick drifted wide.

From a 50:22 kick PBC got a lineout in a good position and were able to score another try by PBC center breaking tackles and getting through to score a try and for Ben O'Connor to convert.

Just before half time Fionn Roussel was able to score another against the Munchin's defence to add insult to injury.

After half time PBC thought they had won the game after their fifth try from Ben O'Connor and he was able to convert it to make the score 35-10.

Later on in the half Munchin's started to gain momentum and were able to score 3 tries in the second half getting them back into the game and making the score 35-29 with 7 minutes left.

Munchin's looked like they were going to score a try to win the game but they were stuck on PBC’s 5 meter line and couldn’t get the ball over the line. Unfortunately PBC won a penalty which secured their win over Munchin's.

Tragedy at Thomond

A perfect start comes to a disappointing end for the Junior lads

by Adam O'Donnell and Tadhg Mullane

Lineups:

St Munchins: Ryan Angley, Adam Naughton, Adam McGlynn, Brendan Minogue, Alex Quinn, Oisin Madden, Darragh Dillon, Calum Kirwin, Adam O’ Shaughnessy, Donnacha Colgan, Cillian McGrath, Eoin Coughlan, Ciaran Howard, Paddy Dowling, Dan Foley

Match Overview

Munchin's got off to a fast start after a great run from Alex Quinn saw Munchin's gain an early 5-point lead after a difficult conversion was put wide by Oisin Madden. Munchin's continued to apply pressure, but PBC were holding firm and were holding Munchin's up over their own line to stop a second try.

Towards the end of the first half PBC received a yellow card and soon after Alex Quinn went over in the corner for his sides second try of the day which was converted brilliantly by Oisin Madden this gave Munchin's a 12-0 lead at the break.

At the start of the second half Munchin's were denied a try by a last-ditch( and no not a ditch) tackle from PBC but minutes later Alex Quinn scored his 3rd try of the day.

Then all of a sudden, the game went PBC’s way, PBC got a much needed try before a block down saw them get a fast second try and then with just a little over 5 minutes left, they got another try which was converted and gave PBC the lead with a score of 21-17. Munchin's kept on pushing for a late winner but nothing came of their attempts.

Munchin's were very unlucky to lose the game especially after the lead that they had in the first half, but it was an amazing display of rugby from the Munchin's boys.

GAA Referee Abuse

A GAA man's take on Referee Abuse

By Tadgh Mullane

GAA president Larry McCarthy insists actions need to speak louder than words when it comes to respecting referees following recent incidents of abuse at officials at club games.

A referee was assaulted by a mentor in a Roscommon minor match and there were two similar incidents of physical abuse highlighted in Wexford in a junior a football match and junior B hurling.

In Waterford, an U12 hurling match had to be called off after a spectator was abusive and in Kerry, an U13 football match was abandoned following an incident where a supporter in a incident were a spectator threatened the referee.

McCarthy was speaking at the launch of GAA referees respect day, which will take place across the weekend of 22 and 23 October to coincide with a few county finals

The campaign aims to raise the profile of referees and bring awareness among GAA members about the level of respect expected to give match officials.

“ As we head towards the end of our first designated club season, there's no denying that the club championship has been a fantastic opportunity for clubs to take centre stage” said McCarthy.

The campaign promises to review the rules concerning infractions against match officials and look at how serious infractions against them are processed within the Association.

SEKIRO: Shadows Die Twice Review

A look at an open-world historical epic

By Rory Specht

Before the release of Elden Ring, FromSoftware’s most recent hit game, they developed and released a game called SEKIRO: Shadows Die Twice in 2019. That year among the releases of many new and popular IP’s, Sekiro was still nominated and won the Game of the Year award. FromSoftware is famous for their unique game design, resulting in a subcategory of videogames to be labelled “soulsborne,” which is derived from the names of FromSoftware’s two most iconic games for this type of gameplay, Dark Souls and Bloodborne. But the point isn’t that this game excels as a soulsborne-type game, it’s that it is able to stand on its own. SEKIRO is a bit of an outlier. It’s combat while different, retains that feel you get of Fromsoftware’s difficult, unforgiving, yet fair and balanced style of gameplay. SEKIRO’s unique combat and game design has actually made it a favourite among many FromSoftware fans despite it being left out of online discussions about FromSoftware’s games more than their other creations. So, let's get into this game which many refer to as a masterpiece.

SEKIRO follows a story set in Japan during the Sengoku period. Unlike other FromSoft games where the player plays a character they create, SEKIRO has its own protagonist, the man known as Wolf. He was found and adopted by Owl, who taught him the ways of a shinobi. Just to clarify, a shinobi is an agent or mercenary who specializes in stealthier offense. Wolf serves a Lord, Kuro who has a special blood which makes him immortal. The main plot of the game revolves around Wolf trying to rescue his lord from the antagonist, Genichiro who wants to use Kuro’s blood to create an immortal army and rescue his own land from the brink of collapse. That’s the general basis of the games story without diving into major spoilers for the events later on in the game. It is a rich and lore-filled world with almost endless secrets and smaller stories to uncover.

The player’s journey begins without any weapons and they must use stealth to get past enemies, a mechanic never seen in previous FromSoft games. This sets the player up with one of their most important tools to play the game efficiently. Then the player must do some platforming which introduces the player to all the extra exploration mechanics such as jumping, wall hugging, corner peeking, ledge hanging and jumping against walls to jump off of then. You’ll meet Kuro and he’ll give you your weapon, a katana which is the main tool of offense. This’ll lead into a short section which helps the player get used to the combat mechanics.

The basic combat loop is blocking and attacking with your katana and occasionally dodging by dashing and jumping around unlockable attacks. You can parry enemy attacks by tapping the block button as soon as an enemy attack lands, this will be to your benefit as I’ll explain later. After losing to the first boss, you encounter in an intended defeat by the developers you will wake up and have access to a grappling hook and a prosthetic arm on your now replaced left arm which can be altered to fit new tools onto it which you’ll find throughout the game, adding more depth and variety to your play style. The prosthetic tool can provide several handy tools for both offense and defense, a long-range extendable spear, a shuriken launcher, a flamethrower or a shield which you can extend from your arm in an instant are just a few examples, not to mention every prosthetic tool can be upgraded to make it easier to settle on a playstyle. These are just some of the options the game offers to add to your arsenal of offensive options, there’s skills which are unique and badass-looking attacks you can perform which do extra damage and posture damage, mikri counters which allow you to counter any thrust attack from an opponent by stomping their weapon onto the ground. There’s an overwhelming number of choices at your disposal to try out for your own and see what works. All these options can be utilized in tandem to help you best the immensely strong opponents you’ll face. But how do we defeat enemies in this game? Well, this is one of Sekiro’s most unique aspects to its gameplay. Both you and the enemies have a health bar and a special bar called posture. Every time you strike and enemy or perfectly parry one of their own attacks, their posture bar will fill up a bit. Enemies parrying your attacks or missing a parry and only blocking will fill up your posture bar. When an enemy's posture bar is full, they become vulnerable to your Shinobi Deathblow which will instantly reduce their health to 0. Some stronger enemies have several lives with which they can take multiple deathblows and still be standing, requiring you to plan around each deathblow. When your posture bar fills up Wolf will stagger and leave you wide open to incoming attacks. Some enemies will have a rapid and powerful offense which may overwhelm the player but as you get used to the mechanics and learn the attacks of an enemy, you’ll find yourself playing far more aggressively and often being on the offensive. Sekiro’s combat loop is one of the best I've ever seen in a game, it is designed to near perfection and takes extreme time and practice to fully master it. And above all else it’s fun, really fun. Sekiro is one of the few games I'd often return to solely to experience the combat again, it’s just that good.

The combat isn’t all that Sekiro has going for it however. The art style and art designs are some of the most unique and memorable I’ve ever seen, as is typical for FromSoft’s games. An immortal headless soldier being puppeted by a parasite, old monks who can barely swing a staff, an enormous snake which looms over an entire area, monkeys with katanas, and highly skilled and equipped samurai. These are just a few examples of the enemy design presented in Sekiro. Every area and enemy are uniquely designed to feel right at home in the world while each being vastly distinct from one another. The breathtaking vistas you’ll witness that’ll keep you invested in the world of Sekiro and is what make it stand above other games.

If you’ve got money you’re spend, I’d recommend Sekiro to anyone looking for a challenge and who wishes to explore a rich and lore-filled world. It is one of the closest things to a masterpiece I’ve witnessed in videogames.

Ant Man and the Wasp Quantumania Review

Marvel is back with a whimper

by Sean Higgins

Ant Man and the Wasp Quantumania is the third film in the Ant Man series and the first in the MCU’s “Phase Five”. Its directed by Peyton Reed who also directed the other two films. It stars Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly as the two mains, with Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer and Kathryn Newton in supporting roles. Jonathan Majors (Creed 3) plays Kang the Conqueror, the films main villian. The plot is what you would expect from Marvel. Ant Man and the gang get sucked into the Quantum Realm and then are tasked with liberating it from the evil tyrant Kang who’s goal is to conquer (hence the name) the whole universe.

It must be noted that Marvel has been on a gradual but noticeable decline since Spiderman Far From Home came out back in 2019. It seems that since 2021 began, there’s been a never-ending output of Marvel TV shows and films by Disney, all with varying standards. Some are good such as Loki, and some are terrible such as Black Widow. Please note however that I have my own personal biases against comic book movies (bar a few exceptions), as I find them repetitive and excessive.

First things first, this is not a good film. It’s the type of Marvel film that goes for a more a comedic approach than a serious one, much like the other two in the series. Only thing is that it’s not that funny. As well as this the story is all over the place and at times is just dumb. Other faults can be found in the abysmal CGI. One character in particular is complete CGI and is probably the best thing in the movie over how terrible he looks (you’ll know when you see him).

Despite all this, I’d be lying if I said that I did not enjoy it. If you go into it expecting a mediocre CGI blockbuster with not much merits and you acknowledge it’s stupidity, you could find some enjoyment in it as I did. However if you’re an avid MCU fan (which I am not) and are expecting Avengers Endgame quality, you will be in for a surprise.

Now for my verdict: I give Ant Man and the Wasp Quantumania a generous 2 stars. It’s far from good, but I did find it enjoyable. Who can know if the MCU will ever make a genuinely great film again. Maybe Scorsese is right. Only time can tell.

Outer Banks Season 3

A review on Outer Banks Paradise on Earth

By Eoin Kirkland and Shane Mcloughlin

Outer Banks is a series set in Outer Banks of North Carolina and entails conflict between two diverse groups of teenagers in search of lost treasure.

The first episode aired on the 15th of April 2020. The island is split into two different sides, the Kooks and Pogue's. The Kooks are the people who live on the North Side of the island which is the rich part of Outer Banks. The Poque's are the “working class” and live on the South side of the island which is also known as the bad side of town.

Season three follows the thrilling end of season 2 where we were left on a cliffhanger where the main character [John Booker Routledge] father comes back from the dead and leaves everyone's jaws on the floor. Outer banks is suitable for kids under the age of 16

Season 3 follows the main cast John B, JJ, Kiara, Sarah, Pope, and Cleo

The third season picks up where the second season left off. The Pogues are Stranded on a Deserted Island that they have named Poguelandia.

The crew dig deeper into the history of the legendary treasure as they encounter new enemies and allies, uncover surprising secrets and face life challenges.

The standout of the new season would be the character development. The main cast all undergo major difficulties and relationship struggles between them. The induction of new characters allows fresh dynamics and interesting situations, which leads to unexpected betrayals and alliances.

Overall this season was a very thrilling watch and I would definitely recommend.
