"I had to overcome some major hurdles in my life in the years leading up to making a move to Amherst, NS. I’m not from here originally, but I’ve felt from day one without a shadow of a doubt that I belong. I chose Amherst as my new home in August 2018 and was welcomed with open arms. In early 2018, I hit rock bottom after struggling for so long so I decided to make positive change for myself, make the move and sign up to NSCC. Before meeting everyone throughout my positivity journey, I really thought I didn’t have much to contribute to society. Going to NSCC, making the connections that I did, receiving amazing support, all lead up to me believing in myself and to give the proper effort to know that I had amazing opportunities right in front of me. Applying for the Town of Amherst Award was something I put a lot of effort into not only prove to myself I was on the right track, but to show just how amazing living in Amherst truly was (is) for me. Being awarded the award validated that even more and I will be forever thankful to know that they too believed in me."
- Ariane C., (2019 Town of Amherst Award Recipient), Business Administration, Cumberland Campus
"The award meant a lot to me and helped with a lot of financial struggle I was having during the courses last year. It kept me motivated during the hard times. Thank you for your support and it’s nice to have a town that gives to their community."
- Kaylin T., (2021 Town of Amherst Award Recipient), Adult Learning Program, Cumberland Campus
"I grew up in Amherst all my life, and to see the town be able to give out awards to those who need it and simply deserve it is really nice. This is something you don’t always see in communities. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, as a teenager or someone young with no kids you don’t see that there is any point of being in Amherst because it doesn’t feel like there is much to do. Having this reward shows just how much the town does care for their younger people. I am currently employed at the Shannex in Amherst, I am a CCA and I love my job."
- Kennedy H., (2020 Town of Amherst Recipient), Continuing Care, Cumberland Campus
"I am still a student at NSCC taking my second year of the Business Administration program at the Amherst Learning Centre location. Receiving the award meant a lot to me as it gave me a financial backing, and that the town I live in supports me and wants me to be successful. The award impacted me by giving me the funds to cover my textbooks and printing credits that were crucial to my successful completion of my first year. I think supporting NSCC students is an amazing commitment the Town of Amherst has and should continue to support its residents, and giving them the chance to succeed and eventually give back to the town after their education is complete."
- Paul J., (2021 Town of Amherst Award Recipient), Business Administration, Cumberland Campus
"Thank you for your support of me and others in the community. This award went towards my tuition and textbooks for NSCC. After my time at NSCC, I held a summer position at Jorgensen & Bickerton Inc. as a Junior Staff Accountant. I am now attending Mount Allison University and am pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce with the goal of becoming a Certified Professional Accountant. NSCC is a great opportunity for almost anyone as they have so many great options. I am proud to say I am an NSCC alumnus and am glad I started my post-secondary journey here. I hope you continue to support NSCC as they continue to help others like they helped me."
- Marshall M., (2021 Town of Amherst Award Recipient), Business Administration, Cumberland Campus
