National Hazing Prevention Week

National Hazing Prevention Week

National Hazing Prevention Week is here, and the ECU Well-Being Collective is gearing up to spread awareness of this issue that sweeps across college campuses every year. September 19-23rd we will turn our attention to hazing prevention in our community.

Hazing is the use of harassment, abuse, or humiliation to initiate a person into a group. It commonly occurs in a wide range of groups: athletics, the arts programs, clubs and organizations, fraternities, sororities, honors societies, etc. This can leave the Hazed with the same feelings that arise from being bullied. In extreme cases it can lead to physical injury or even death. Beginning on September 19th we will turn our attention to Hazing Awareness Week to encourage our pirates to help prevent events like this from ever occurring.

How Can I Help?

It takes a village to eliminate hazing, but small acts of kindness and being aware of your actions can go a long way towards contributing to the cause. Strive to be an active bystander and lend a listening ear to those who need support to help while trying to find community at ECU. Find alternative ways to build unity in your student clubs and organizations that could serve as learning opportunities for students such as team building exercises or healthy collaborative competition. Lastly, seek out resources on campus for those looking to report acts of hazing or help cope with the experience of being hazed.

To be a part of Pirate Nation means to help develop future leaders and inspire positive change. Creating and inclusive and supportive culture while taking the extra step to support our fellow pirates is crucial to building a strong and successful community. This week, be open to speaking with other students about their experiences, seek to learn more about the topic, and join us in pledging against hazing.
