Spring & Summer Grocery Shopping By Juliana Anderson

After three months of root vegetables, it’s finally time for the return of bright fruits and vegetables, popping with flavor and summertime nostalgia! Eating seasonal fruits and veggies is the best way to ensure your food is at it’s peak flavor and freshness. Fun fact, it is also cheaper to buy in season!

The best fruits to buy now are kiwis, honey dew melons, cherries, strawberries, pineapple, grapefruit, apricots, lemons, and rhubarb! Most of these fruits are great for making a refreshing spring-time drink, baking, or to snack on during a beautiful afternoon.

The best vegetables to buy right now are beets, asparagus, carrots, artichokes, herbs, peas, fava beans, green garlic, morel mushrooms, peas, and a variety of greens! You can make a beautiful salad, or use these vegetables paired with a yummy spring fish such as salmon or trout.

Another great way to ensure the freshness and flavor of your fruits and vegetables is by buying them form your local farmers at a farmers’ market. Not only are you getting the “best for your buck” with produce right off the farm, but you are also supporting local businesses. Listed below are a few farmers’ markets in Greenville!

Leroy James Farmers’ Market – Country Home Rd

Farmers & Makers Market – Dickinson Ave

Umbrella Market – W 4th St

Briley’s Farm Market – Old Pactolus Rd

Try incorporating some in-season fruits and vegetables into your meal plan this week to change things up. You might be surprised at how much better your meals are.

Happy grocery shopping, Pirates!
