The content and information within this Social Toolkit is designed to support the release of the Shark Conservation Fund (SCF) Five Year Impact Report during the 7th Our Ocean Conference and the amplification of SCF’s key achievements and commitments by SCF’s founders, partners and grantees.
The report and SCF’s Our Ocean Press Release are under strict embargo until April 13th, 2022 at 00:01 PWT.
Assets, documents and social media posts related to SCF’s Five Year Impact Report should not be shared publicly until the embargo lifts.
The web address for the report and SCF’s Our Ocean Press Release will be added to this toolkit shortly before release.
ABOUT THE IMPACT REPORT
For the past five years, SCF has utilized a science-driven strategy to achieve real conservation outcomes focused on solving the shark and ray crisis. The release of the SCF’s Five Year Impact Report released at the 7th Our Ocean Conference in Palau is part of the announcement of a new commitment from SCF to contribute at lease $25 million over the next five years to the improvement of ocean health and biodiversity through sweeping shark and ray conservation.
As outlined in the Five Year Impact report, SCF’s 2022 Our Ocean Pledge builds on 5 years of successful collaboration dedicated to maintaining the vibrancy of the ocean by halting the overexploitation of sharks and rays through strategic grantmaking.
We are now ready to share our results. As we look to the next five years and beyond, our strategy will help shape and inform future ocean conservation actions. As an umbrella species, saving sharks will help save the ocean.
FIVE YEAR IMPACT IN NUMBERS
$23 million awarded to build NGO capacity around the world and advance shark and ray conservation.
Key achievements include:
- Securing full legal protection for approximately 20% of all shark and ray species in key countries.
- Establishing 207,185 square kms of of shark and ray beneficial MPAs, with an additional 504,238 square kms under development.
- Adoption of new shark and ray management measures in 19 countries.
NEXT FIVE YEARS OF IMPACT
At least $25 million awarded to achieve the following:
- Expand additional Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to benefit sharks and rays.
- Protect more shark and ray species.
- Ensure the trade of sharks and rays is sustainable and regulated.
- Establish stronger fishing regulations.
To be announced during the 7th Our Ocean Conference in Palau, 13-14 April.
