Cabarrus County 4-H

2022 Friendsgiving

We had a wonderful time this year at our annual Friendsgiving. The event was hosted by the South Central District Officers located in Rowan County.

We had three of Cabarrus County youth in attendance.

They enjoyed fellowship and working on some community service. The group helped to make warm fuzzies and ornaments to donate to local hospitals.

Next teen event will be Winter Enrichment on January 14th 2023 in Union County.

Winter Fest 4-H After-school Event

What a way to wrap up 2022 with 4-H after-school teachers than to have a Winter Fest event! Forty-one after-school teachers enjoyed a morning of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities. They created beaded snowflakes with great math concepts for children, tested their engineering skills by making a snowball launcher and learned a unique way of painting called Pointillism which uses dots of paint to create a captivating scene. After-school teachers also loved making Van Gogh paintings and used baking soda and glue to enhance snowy scenes. The morning ended with a baked spaghetti luncheon to thank the teachers for their continued support of 4-H after-school.

Planning for 2023

Cabarrus County Extension and Community (ECA) Officers

Cabarrus County Extension and Community (ECA) Officers met recently to select program topics for the 2023 year. ECA members have selected a wide variety of program topics for 2023 that will interest ECA members and Cabarrus residents.

S.O.A.R

This year our NC Cooperative Extension/ Cabarrus County Center Staff has had the opportunity to share monthly, hands on educational programs with the S.O.A.R Program participants at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. Skills, Opportunity, Awareness, Readiness ( S.O.A. R) is a community college program designed specifically for adults with intellectual disabilities and are 18 years of age and over. Extension educational programs focus on "hands on learning" opportunities that give each student an opportunity to explore some of Extension's key programs.

Hands on learning in the area of Family and Consumer Sciences often focuses on foods and nutrition - always a favorite topic! May's FCS topic was "All About Strawberries" and sampling strawberry smoothies was a "hit". The December 1st program was another tasty treat . Participants used measurements -teaspoons, tablespoons and cups to prepare their own individual instant hot chocolate mix using "recycled" pint canning jars. Each jar included directions for making the hot chocolate at home and students left with the jars in gift bags ready for the holidays!

Following the program, Coordinator Dianne Shepherd expressed how beneficial it was for each student to have the opportunity to do measurements!

If you have any questions about nutrition, health, food safety or food preservation please contact Extension Agent, Family and Consumer Sciences Pamela Outen or call 704-920-3310.

Be sure you sign up for our email updates to not miss any of our future events.

Cabarrus County Agriculture

Regional Cattle Working Contest

Congratulations to Mt. Pleasant High School FFA. Their team placed 1st in the Regional Cattle Working Contest this December!

This competition asks students to take the Beef Quality Assurance certification test, identify equipment, feedstuffs, and breeds in the skill-a-thon and work two cows through a chute where they administer vaccines and ear tags.

We wish them the best of luck at the state contest!

Cabarrus County Cattlemen's Association

Barry Howard from the Law Office of Barry R. Howard, PA gave a wonderful presentation regarding wills and land transfers at our December cattlemen's meeting. Our County Extension Director Tracy LeCompte also gave a interesting presentation on "Visit NC Farms" app.

For more information about Cabarrus County Cattlemen's Association, please contact Extension Agent, Agriculture - Livestock and Field Crops Mackenzie Hall or call 704-920-3310.
