Grand Haven wrestling goes two for two on Bucs pride night By Riley Vining

WHAT HAPPENED:

The wrestling team competed in their annual Bucs pride meet on Wednesday, Dec. 15. The Bucs wore purple singlets to honor those who have beaten cancer, those who are currently fighting cancer and those who have passed away from the disease. They played two matches and secured a close victory in the first with a score of 34-33 on top of Forest Hills Northern. The second match resulted in a blowout victory with a score of 66-12 over the South Haven Rams.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN:

These are the first dual meets of the year for Grand Haven, making their record 2-0 on the season.

KEY PLAYERS:

  • Junior Dylan Cummings performed well throughout his matches, coming away with two victories. He offensively could not be stopped, with eight takedowns and one reversal on the night.
  • Junior Logan Vining led the team points with a total of 12. He won both of his matches, leading the team in pins. His opposition could not stop him, pinning both within the first period.

THEY SAID IT:

  • “We had a couple of tough matches because there were a couple of good guys on their team,” senior captain Aiden Pike said. “But, we’ve been training pretty hard and I think it reflected pretty well on the mat”
  • “Overall it is nice to get a win,” coach Vince Gervais Said. “I think we have things to work on. We will add them as point of emphasis to improve on for the next time. As long as they are trying to get a little bit better every single day we are doing the right things.”

WHAT'S NEXT:

The wrestling program will have a J.V. match at home on Friday, Dec. 17. at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity team will have a individual wrestling meet at West Ottawa on Saturday, Dec. 18. at 9:00 a.m.
