SCHOOL COUNCIL The September meeting of School Council is scheduled for next Tuesday, September 13, commencing at 7.00pm SHARP in the staffroom. Documents will be emailed out to all Council members by Friday and also available on our shared drive.

FATHERS DAY STALL Many thanks to the wonderful mums who organised the Father’s Day stall last Friday. There were many excellent presents for sale and I hope all of our dads were truly spoiled on Saturday. There was also again another stall from the Grade 4 entrepeneurial group ‘Life Indoors’ who donated all profits to the school so thank you to them as well.

END OF TERM The final day of term is Friday of next week – September 16. School concludes at 2.30pm with students dismissed directly from classrooms. We will continue with our morning assemblies next week – Grades 3 to 6 on Monday at 9am and Grades Foundation to 2 at 9am on Fridays and will advise if there are any changes to these arrangements as Term 4 unfolds and COVID numbers continue to decline. With brighter weather, we may revert to outside assemblies on the Tiger Turf enabling all students to be in attendance at the same time.

WORKING BEE There was another good turnout for a working bee last Saturday with further excellent progress made on our new vegie patch. Thanks again to the work crew whose labour of love will help us produce a wonderful vegie patch that we should all be proud of – some work in progress photos attached.

STUDENT DISCO Tomorrow night will be a special night for our students as the Parents and Friends hold a student disco night in the gymnasium. The place will be rocking!

That’s it from me. I hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

Kind regards,

Bill Kersing

Principal

The Student Wellbeing Hub https://studentwellbeinghub.edu.au/

Wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. When your child feels connected to their family, peers and teachers they feel secure in the knowledge that they will be supported throughout their learning journey.

The PARENTS EXPLORE tab will take you to a space, where you can find information and advice about important topics like bullying, online safety, communicating with your child and the school, and much more, to help you make your child’s learning journey a safe and positive one.

You can also help your child find out more about wellbeing using the STUDENTS EXPLORE tab. Help them find out how to keep healthy, happy and get the most out of school. They can explore topics and student learning resources on things like dealing with bullying, how to be smart online, and lots more as well as games, videos and websites just for kids!

Parenting Seminars with Berry Street Family support agency Berry Street, are offering two further online programs for our school community:

1. Supporting Children with Anxiety – 12 October

We know that many children are experiencing anxiety at the moment. Individual and group evidence based parenting support is available to help parents/carers support their children (aged 6-14) around anxiety through the Fear-Less Triple P Group. This can be particularly helpful whilst on the waitlist for psychological services.

2. Parenting With Confidence – 19 October

Join the Berry Street Matters Family Therapy team for a friendly discussion about the challenges and opportunities of parenting.

Registrations must be completed by 5th October.

Please click here to see the Berry Street Seminar Flyer for further content and registration details.

Thank you to all the parents and carers who tuned into the programs on offer last term.

Have a great week.

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) The 2022, Year 3 and Year 5 individual NAPLAN results have been sent to the school and will be distributed to families before the end of term. This year, all assessments were completed online, except for Year 3 Writing. Currently, we do not have access to how we went compared to State or National results in 2022 (however, these are relatively stable year-to-year). The below table shows results from 2022 compared to State 2021 results. These are NOT the same cohort of students. Once known, we will communicate this to you.

While we have exceeded the 2021 State results, care must be taken until we know the 2022 State results. Regardless, we are very proud of all our Year 3 and Year 5 students (and the staff who administered the assessments) for how they conducted themselves back in May. As a ‘heads-up’ to our current Year 2 and Year 4 parents, NAPLAN will be completed in the second half of March 2023.

School Disco The Disco is tomorrow (Friday 9th) evening! We have had approximately 520 responses that have indicated that students are attending or have declined the event (out of approximately 640).

In an effort to mitigate any virus risk at the moment, we will have at least 4 air purifiers turned on in the gym. Hand sanitiser will be available, and mask wearing is encouraged (any masks will need to be provided from home). Attendees are asked to bring their own (named) water bottle and we will have a ‘chill out’ zone available. The windows will open and close automatically. While we know that your child/ren will be disappointed if they can’t attend, please keep them at home if they are unwell.

All volunteers at the Disco (BBQ, inside supervising, packing up etc) MUST have a current Working With Children Check. Volunteers will be required to sign in on one of the school iPads which will be located at the gym. If you have signed in before and set up a ‘Quick PIN’ this will take less than one minute. If you have not signed in before, or set up a Quick PIN, this will be a lengthy process. You must bring your WWCC with you, enter the details, and have it sighted.

Parents and Friends Our last meeting was on Tuesday 30 August. We finalised plans for the very successful Father’s Day Stall and did some forward planning for Friday’s Disco. Without the time and effort put in by the organising committee, many of the events that the students look forward to, could not happen. Our next P&F meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 4th October at 7:30pm. This meeting will be held online in an effort have as many parents attend as possible. A Webex meeting link will be forwarded to all families on Monday the 3rd October. The final meeting of the year will be a dinner meeting on Tuesday 15th November at a local venue (yet to be determined).

Social Media As happens every year at this time, we have had an influx of families reading the Viewbank Voice (this newsletter). This is primarily due to next year Foundation enrolments and new enrolments - welcome to our school! So you are aware, the school has five communication channels to share information with you:

  1. Viewbank Voice Newsletter http://www.viewbankps.vic.edu.au/newsletters
  2. Compass https://viewbankps-vic.compass.education/
  3. Website http://www.viewbankps.vic.edu.au/
  4. Facebook https://www.facebook.com/viewbankps
  5. Instagram @viewbankps

Compass, Viewbank Voice and the website are your first ‘port of call’ for school information, and Facebook and Instagram are more so for snapshots of some of the daily school events that occur.

SunSmart Policy - Hats Each year in August, we make a decision regarding hat wearing that is in line with our SunSmart Policy. http://www.viewbankps.vic.edu.au/s/SunSmart-Policy-9rp9.pdf. Hats will be required to be worn daily from Monday 29 August until 30 April. All students must wear a sun protective hat that shades the face, neck and ears for all outdoor activities.

Have a great weekend.

Patrick

LATE ARRIVALS Please ensure children who arrive late go straight to the office to be marked as present. If the child does not come to the office for a late pass a text message will be sent to the parent/carer notifying that the child is absent. Late arrivals can only be time stamped at the office. When Parents/carers record the late arrival in Compass it provides us with the explanation but does not mark your child as present. When your child presents at the office, staff will record your child’s actual arrival time which updates the class roll.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK (WWCC) A ‘Working with Children Check’ is just one part of creating and maintaining a child-safe environment. It is a requirement that all parents/careers who wish to volunteer or participate in school activities have a current WWCC. https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/

Kind regards,

Lucy Addati

School disco helpers needed. We are in search for some helpers to set up the bbq area from 3.30 to 4.30 the day of the disco. Kids can be there and have a play on the playground while the adults get it set up.

We are also in need for some BBQ helpers between 4.30-7.30 if anyone is free. They are in hour blocks or feel free to do a couple of hours, we will appreciate anything that you can do.

Parent helpers at the disco are required as well. The tasks include supervising all doors (so no students can leave), supervising the toilets and drink tap area, signing the students in and out when parents arrive to collect them as well as monitoring student behaviour. And just general looking out for students that may have a question or need some help with their dance moves!!!!

We have a few names down and we thank you for that but we still need more. Jump on the compass site and book in for a time that suits you.

Please note all parents must have a working with children check prior to the event and they need to be registered at the school office prior to the night.
