Parkside Primary News Week ending: Friday 22nd July

ENJOY THE SUMMER BREAK

Thank you for all of your support and understanding during the extreme heat we experienced at the beginning of this week. It certainly made for a challenging end to the term! As we arrive at the summer holidays all of us at Parkside would like to say how proud we are of the children for all of their hard work and enthusiasm during this busy school year. It has been a pleasure to see all of their achievements over the year. We have all thoroughly enjoyed seeing the return of larger group activities, school trips and having visitors back in school - all of which enhance the experience for the children.

We hope you all have a wonderful summer - take time to relax and enjoy spending time together. Keep safe! You find lots of information about activities available in the area and safety advice further down this newsletter. We look forward to seeing the children back in school on Tuesday 6th September.

Good luck for the future - we know you will all do brilliantly. We are so proud of everything you have achieved in your time here. We will miss you but you will always be a part of Team Parkside!

Good luck Year 6!

PARKSIDE OUTDOOR READING CHALLENGE

It's really important for children to keep reading over the summer holidays. We have created an outdoor summer reading to challenge to help inspire them.

Click the button below to download the sheet. Children can cross off the challenges that they complete, and we encourage them to take photos or draw pictures of each challenge so that they can create a reading scrapbook of their Summer reading journey!

ECO ASPIRATIONS DAY

We are going to be holding an Aspirations Day in the Autumn Term with an 'Eco' theme. If you or anyone you know has a 'green' occupation or a career in the environmental sector, it would be fantastic if you were able to come in and talk to the children. It really helps to inspire them about the opportunities available to them in the future . If you would be willing to get involved, Mrs Coxon would love to hear from you. Please call or email on parkside.primary@eastriding.gov.uk

PUBLIC HEALTH LETTER

East Riding of Yorkshire Council public health would like to ask parents and carers for support in reminding everyone in their household, both adults and children, to remember the basic steps to help reduce the spread of infection in the community. Current infections circulating in the community and on a national level, particularly in younger children are:

  • Chickenpox
  • Scarlet fever
  • Diarrhoea and vomiting
  • COVID-19

Please click the button below for the full letter.

UNIFORM

We know that as the summer holidays start so do thoughts about getting new uniform for September! Please can we take this opportunity to remind you of the uniform policy. You can view this by clicking the button below.

We would like to draw your attention to the section about earrings. Our policy states that earrings must be completely removed for PE lessons. They cannot be taped over and children must be able to remove them themselves. PE equipment is also used at playtimes (such as bats, balls, skipping ropes, hoops). Children will not be permitted to use these whilst wearing earrings.

Please click the link below if you need a reminder about the new PE uniform. This will be the expectation for children on PE days in the new school year from Reception year upwards. (Just a reminder that Reception children do not usually start PE sessions until after Christmas, so there is no rush to purchase for those children.)

PRE-LOVED UNIFORM

The pre-loved uniform stall went really well on Wednesday. We'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who has donated uniform so far. In the Autumn Term we will be placing some bins in the outdoor classroom for parents wishing to drop off any uniform donations. These will be emptied regularly so we can hold more stalls in future.

We are particularly in need of more items in smaller sizes, so if you have any of those they would be very gratefully received.

Why not have a clear out over the summer? It's a great way to make space at home and help the environment by recycling, as well as supporting other families too.

CROSSING WESTERN ROAD

Over the course of the year we have put a number of reminders in the newsletter about using the pedestrian crossing (zebra crossing) as the safest way to cross Western Road. Please continue to do so and do not take unnecessary risks to get across.

Please can we also remind those driving to school to drive with extreme care when close to the school. Please be particularly aware of young pedestrians and cyclists. Drive with extra caution and ensure you stop at the pedestrian crossing. When near schools, the Highway Code states you should "drive very slowly until you are clear of the area."

Rule 207 of the Highway Code

Particularly vulnerable pedestrians. These include:

  • children and older pedestrians who may not be able to judge your speed and could step into the road in front of you. At 40 mph (64 km/h) your vehicle will probably kill any pedestrians it hits. At 20 mph (32 km/h) there is only a 1 in 20 chance of the pedestrian being killed. So kill your speed.

JUNCTION THEATRE SUMMER SCHOOL

During the Summer Holidays, Junction has organised a theatre summer school for young people between the ages of 5 and 16.

For four weeks, the young people will have the experience to work with a team of professional theatre makers and develop their performing and making skills, together with expanding their social skills and confidence.

The summer school offers two different programmes:

Play In A Week – the young people get to create, practice, learn movement and lines and rehearse a play based on a given script; (ages 11-13s and 14-16s) Shadow Puppetry – a set of sessions where the participants will create their own shadow puppets, learn how to manoeuvre them and create stories around their characters. Two artists from Indigo Moon Theatre will be delivering these sessions, one of which will be an Indonesian artist, Haviel Perdana, who will be bringing the authenticity of the craft into the room; (ages 5-7s and 8-10s)

At the end of each week, the young people will have the opportunity to perform in front of their invited guests on the main stage at Junction.

This project engages with the young people for a longer duration of time (a week), as Junction wants to emphasise the value of the experience and the range of skills that the participants will have after spending a week with the artists.

Junction Summer School has been made possible through funding awarded by the Holiday Activities and Food Programme.

The summer school is FREE to all children aged between 5-16 years old on free school meals, and a FREE lunch will be provided daily. Limited additional places are also available.
