Spanish Visa Workshop Steps to secure your student visa

Reminder: Always refer to the Spanish Consulate website for the most up-to-date and accurate information.

The Spanish government can change requirements at their own whim. Do your best to stay on top of the requirements throughout your application process!

Do not make international travel plans for the break! You will likely not have your passport back by then.

Visa Requirement Checklist ( > 90 days)

  • 2 copies of the Spain Student Visa Application, completed correctly and entirely
  • Original passport and photocopy of passport photo ID page
  • 2 copies of driver’s license front and back on one page – Must be notarized
  • 2 passport size photos (can be purchased at the UNM Passport Center in the Bookstore)
  • 2 copies of Lobo ID card front and back on one page
  • Original and a copy of acceptance letter from host university in Spain
  • Evidence of funds (2 copies) – If providing bank statements, 2 copies per month – three recent months.
  • Proof of health insurance (2 copies)
  • Original Letter to Consulate from UNM (provide at your paperwork drop-off appointment)
  • Money order for $160 payable to the Consulate General of Spain
  • Pre-paid USPS Express Mail Envelope
  • Request to return visa by mail letter

Studying longer than 6 months?

  • You will need all the above, plus:
  • FBI Background check – must be apostatized and translated into Spanish
  • Medical Certificate (must match specific wording or it will be rejected)

Spain Student Visa Application

  • Find on the Spanish Consulate website under: study visa
  • Fill it out legibly & mind your dates (day/month/year)
  • Put N/A in boxes that do not pertain to you
  • Box #23 (Applicant’s Address in Spain) – if known, fill in. If unknown write “See #28”, which is your Host University information
  • Fill out one form and then photocopy it

Original passport and photocopy of passport photo ID page

  • Must be valid for at least one year after you plan to return from Spain
  • Make sure your passport is signed by you
  • Must have a blank page to attach the visa
  • Include a photocopy of passport photo ID page in addition to original passport.

Proof of your permanent residence in NM

  • 2 copies of Driver’s License or Voter Registration Card
  • Copy of front and back on one page

Proof that you are a student at UNM

  • 2 copies of your Lobo ID card
  • Copy of front and back on one page

2 Passport Photos

  • Attach one to each copy of visa application
  • Have your photos taken a the UNM Passport Center in the Bookstore!
  • GLUE one to each application. Do NOT staple or tape.

Acceptance Letter from Host University in Spain

  • Original and a copy!
  • These can be the emailed version of the original acceptance letter but we need them in print form and 2 copies!

Original Letter to Consulate from UNM

  • GEO will provide you with this letter addressed to the Consulate.

Evidence of funds (2 copies)

  • You must show that you will have at least €579.02 per month that you will be in Spain.

For example, if you will be there for 6 months, you need to show that you have €579.02 X 6 months available. €579.02 X 6 = €3,474.12. €3,474.12 converted into U.S. dollars on 5/24/2022 is $2,656.13.

  1. You can use your financial aid/scholarship awards. Ask Financial Aid for a letter stating how much aid you have been awarded for the term(s) you will be abroad. Please note: If your financial aid/scholarships do not cover $621/month, you will need to show your financial means through personal or parental funds
  2. You can provide your most recent three (3) bank statements, showing that you have enough money in your account(s). Must provide three months’ worth of bank statements and two copies of each.

If your parents or family will be supporting you, you must include:

  1. A copy of their photo ID
  2. Their most recent three (3) bank statements, showing they have enough money to meet $579.02 /month. Must provide three months’ worth of bank statements and two copies of each
  3. A notarized letter from your parents stating that they will be supporting you during your stay in Spain.

Proof of Insurance (2 copies):

  • UNM's mandatory CISI insurance will cover this requirement! Just be sure to purchase the policy for students who need a Spanish visa ($14.03 per week)

You must provide two insurance consulate letters with your name, passport number and dates of travel. This will be sent to you after you purchase the insurance!

Important: Your coverage dates must cover the dates of your acceptance letter. You are required to have insurance from the day you depart from the US until the day you return! If you are traveling before or after your program, your insurance must cover those additional time periods.

  • Just match your insurance coverage to your flight dates!

Original Letter to Consulate from UNM

  • GEO will provide you with this letter addressed to the Consulate.

Money Order or Cashier's Check for $160

  • Payable to "The Consulate General of Spain"
  • Must be a money order! Not cash or check
  • This can be done at , the Post Office, your bank, a grocery store, a convince store, and other locations

Pre-paid USPS Express Mail Envelope (if needed)

  • Ask for a “Pre-paid Express Mail Envelope” at the post office.
  • It should cost about $25. If you pay less than that, you are probably getting the wrong envelope.
  • Put your address in both the “TO” space and the consulates address in the “FROM” spaces.
  • Do not seal the envelope!

Request to send visa by mail.

  • Must be notarized!
  • We can notarize this for you during your paperwork drop off appointment.
  • Acknowledgment of university representation (also notarized).

Additional requirements for students studying for 6 months or longer:

Medical Statement

  • Must have a doctor’s statement dated within 3 months of Visa Application.
  • Find the template on the Spanish Consulate website
  • Must be signed by an MD.
  • Can be completed at UNM’s SHAC (Student Health and Counseling Center).
  • Must be printed on the doctors letterhead and have their signature.

Criminal Record Check Certificate

1. Order your FBI background check - https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/identity-history-summary-checks

2. Send the background check to the U.S. Department of State for an Apostille - . https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/records-and-authentications/authenticate-your-document/apostille-requirements.html

3. Take the Apostilled FBI background check to be interpreted into Spanish by an official translator.

Final Steps:

  • Gather all materials and documentation and take them to your appointment with your study abroad advisor
  • Material drop off and notary dates TBD, sign-up for drop-off time will be on LoboAchieve
  • Batch processing waits for no one! Have your materials perfectly completed by the deadline.
  • Patiently wait for your visa
  • Enjoy the fruits of your labor
