Superintendent's Summary DR. JACK PARKER ~ 2.28.23

With the winter season beginning to transition to spring, we will soon start to see tulips and lilies emerge from their winter slumber and provide that pop of color on our landscape. This time of year is also very energizing for our schools as we see students' eyes light up and display additional learning growth. I am currently working my way through the schools serving as a substitute teacher for a day and being able to directly work with the great students and staff in Mt. Vernon is a highlight of my year. Working with our students is energizing! I can directly see the things they are learning and each time I am with our students, I am amazed at what they’ve learned and what teachers have done to get that accomplished.

Keep up the great work MV! With only a short time before our spring break and a return for our final quarter, there is still much to do. Please take the time to visit school through an activity whether it be athletics, performing arts, or another event. You too will be amazed to see what our students can do!

"Kids Riding Bikes" Program

"Kids Riding Bikes" Sponsored by the Community Foundation of Hancock County

A bike safety initiative from the Town of Fortville developed into an engaging learning experience for all of Fortville Elementary students. After the Community Foundation of Hancock County chose to pilot and sponsor the bike safety program, Fortville Elementary School (FES) partnered with Nine13Sports to bring their “Kids Riding Bikes'' program to Mt. Vernon for the very first time. This program aims to teach students how safely riding bikes can be beneficial in many ways, by giving them a fun and engaging experience right in their own gymnasium!

Hancock County Promise Breakfast

A breakfast event was recently held to celebrate the Hancock County Promise. The Promise program aims to foster a community-wide culture where all students have the opportunity to open a CollegeChoice 529 Direct Savings Account at an early age.

At this celebration, six kindergarteners from Hancock County were randomly drawn and awarded $250 for their CollegeChoice 529 Direct Savings Accounts.

The Mini-Marauder Preschool students also paid a visit to sing and act out a few special songs, including the rain washing away the "Itsy Bitsy Spider." The attendees loved the energy (and cuteness)!

The Hancock County Promise program strives to ensure every student believes they can have a post-secondary education and has their community’s support.

Kindergarten Roundup 2023

It's time to mark your calendars for Kindergarten Roundup! Visit the Mt. Vernon elementary school your child will attend on Tuesday, April 4 or Thursday, April 6 between 3:00 - 6:30 p.m.

It is imperative to have all Kindergarten students attend so the schools may employ enough teachers to keep the class size low. MVCSC will have full-day kindergarten only and students eligible for kindergarten registration must have attained the age of five (5) on or before August 1st.

For more information, including an appeal process, click here.

Mini-Marauder Preschool Enrollment Opens for In-District Residents

Vernon's accredited preschool for the district and provides services for children who are ages 3-5. Mt. Vernon’s Mini-Marauder Preschool has once again achieved the accreditation of a Level 3 Paths to QUALITY™ Program which is Indiana’s statewide quality rating and improvement system for early care and education. The Mini-Marauder Preschool open enrollment period will run through May 19. Students are enrolled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Preschool enrollment is only open to in-district residents, currently enrolled Mini-Marauders or siblings of a student currently attending a Mt. Vernon School.
