Hosted by the San Diego Polymer Guild
A Zoom course
September 10th, 2022
One of the most fantastic attributes of polymer is its willingness to accept a vast array of different media, either mixed in or applied to the surface. This makes polymer even more of a chameleon material and creates huge opportunities for those who enjoy experimenting!
But perhaps with all this freedom comes a little uncertainty about where to begin? And how to make certain that what you've applied is permanent or at least - not likely to peel off? This course will give you some absolute basics about surface applications and how to mix media on the surface of your polymer work.
We'll be covering what can be applied to the uncured polymer and then what can be applied the surface after the curing process.
We'll also cover how to properly seal your surface once you're finished.
We'll be taking a look at acrylic water based finishes including all kinds of acrylic paint and ink, acrylic pastes including Inka and others, glass paint, and acrylic paint pens. We'll talk about mica products. Definitely there will be talk about pastels - particularly my favorites, Pan Pastels! We'll talk about alcohol inks in all forms and a few solvent based media plus anything you're curious about that's not mentioned here.
One of my goals in teaching this course is to give students a real sense of adventure and comfort with experimenting with the media they have - and to give them the confidence to try anything and see where it leads. AND REMEMBER, please don't buy every product on the optional supply list. If you like what I demo you can get it later!
And after talking about products that can be used I'll be demonstrating several of my favourite veneers to make! We'll use these veneers to create some simple components - pendants, simple earring sets and hollow beads. Samples of these can be seen in the next photo grid. I know you'll also be excited to use some of these veneers in your own work as well!
The following slide show will give you some closeups of some of my favourite surfaces. I will be showing you how to make several of these as well as covering the basic principles to guide you. You will receive a PDF at the end of the class which will remind you of the basic steps and principles involved.
As a registered particpant you will also be invited to join a Facebook group I've created to follow up on the course for 6 weeks. You can post questions at any time and post what you've made (if you want to). I will answer those questions as I can, but will also be having 'office hours' - Tuesday and Thursday, 6-8 PM. Pacific Time, of course! During that time I will answer your questions live. The Facebook group will end on October 22, 2022
