Storyteller News from the school of communications, media, arts and design at centennial college

Winter 2022

Dean's Message

Happy New Year! I realize it is February already, but with this being the first newsletter of the year and the first opportunity for me to connect with our students, graduates, faculty and staff, I felt I couldn't let the opportunity pass.

I am excited for the year ahead. The past two years have been full of ups and downs, but it has been a time of learning, reflection and growth for us as a school. It is hard to believe that we will enter year three of the global pandemic next month. Our plans to welcome more students back to campus were stalled recently, but as I write this, it appears we will soon be able to lift some restrictions and provide more in-person learning once again. The College, from day one, has been focused on the safety of our community, and I want to assure everyone that they will continue to lead us forward with safety as the guiding principle.

This edition of Storyteller, like all of the others before it, brings a big smile to my face. We have been doing this for long enough that I shouldn't be surprised by the accomplishments of our graduates and students, but each issue highlights so many new stories that I can't help but be amazed.

We have many outstanding graduates. This issue has incredible graduate stories that continue our terrific "Where Are They Now" series. It is exciting to read about Chaeyeon Lee's success in the Animation industry working at Pixar and Emmy-nominated Children's Media graduate Brandon Lane's success as a producer. Public Relations graduate Justine Jones is working for the Toronto Raptors and Jaclyn Desforges, whose latest poetry collection landed on CBC Book's Best Canadian Poetry of 2021 list.

It is not just our graduates that impress though. We also feature some excellent student and faculty news, including Jennifer McIlroy winning a prestigious college award, a Music student starring in a new TV series, a graphic design student winning an RGD award and Broadcasting program coordinator Karen Shopsowitz's documentary about Elwy Yost premiering on TVO.

I hope you all enjoy this edition and find some inspiration in these articles as I did. I am, as always, proud to be a part of the School of Communications, Media, Arts and Design community.

Where Are They Now? Storyteller Edition

Catching up with our grads for our Where Are They Now? series created an outstanding digital space to discuss different industries and what roles within each industry might look like on a day to day basis. The series also unlocked the opportunity for our grads to give advice to those interested in following similar career paths as them. This has been an invaluable addition that we are thrilled current and prospective students can turn to.

While the series is set to start back up soon, we want to share a bunch of amazing grad stories with you in the meantime. In each profile you will find out more about each grad, what led them to their program here at the Story Arts Centre, and their advice for those in their field.

Be sure to follow our Instagram @storyartscentre to follow along with our series!
