Principal's Message
Kia Ora Koutou
This morning I received this Official Notification from PPTA to confirm Industrial Actions ahead. I sent you detailed information via email this morning about the differing parts of these actions however I have put below some of the basics:
The strike actions will begin at 7:00am on 12 June 2023 and will end at 11:59pm on 30 June 2023. All strike actions include work that would otherwise be undertaken on, or away, from the school site.
Relief ban
PPTA members will not provide relief cover during their entitled non-contact periods. PPTA members will only supervise, not teach, normally scheduled classes if students from other classes are included because relief teachers cannot be provided. This strike action will be continuous for the period stated above.
Work outside of school hours
PPTA members at St Matthew’s will not work outside 8:10-4:10. This strike action will be continuous for the period stated above.
Rostering home
On the days notified below, students in the named year level, will not be taught or supervised by PPTA members. Teaching and supervision of other year levels not subject to the strike action will continue as normal.

NCEA change programme ban
PPTA members that are not part of the pilots will not undertake any work related to preparation for NCEA changes. This includes professional learning and development and engagement with Ministry of Education and NZQA related to the preparation for NCEA changes.
This strike action will be continuous for the period stated above.
NCEA concerns for students
I want to acknowledge your communications following my letter regarding continued industrial actions.
I write here what I wrote to a member of our community today “Teachers are ensuring students are fully cognisant of work ahead. Rostered home days can allow students to complete assigned work. I can guarantee that the teachers are also ensuring academic programmes can be fulfilled.”
We all look forward to a timely and fair resolution.

Boarding Note
The Year 13 Leaders Apartment in Main House is proving to be a positive experience for both junior and senior boarders. Not only does it provide opportunities for the girls to connect across year groups, but it also provides leadership experience for all Year 13 boarders rather than just those who are prefects.
A perk of being in the Leaders Apartment is the grocery voucher the girls receive each week if they are completing their duties to a high standard. This photo was taken earlier in the week when the girls had just been supermarket shopping with their vouchers. Pictured below are Sophie Smith and Annabel Barnsley two of the five current leaders.
Finally a few reminders:
- When your daughter is absent from school please ring either Main House or Hampton House. That way we know who is absent from boarding and we can then let school know as the roll is sent through each day by the Matron on duty.
- With the strike action continuing, permanent part time boarders are able to switch nights to suit. If you are able to email through your chosen nights by Sunday night it would be much appreciated.
- This Sunday there is a boarders activity to Clip and Climb so both boarding houses will be closed between Sunday 8.30am until 4.30pm.
Have a great weekend.

Wairarapa Times-Age Sports Awards
The Wairarapa Times-Age Sports Awards were held in the Carterton Events Centre last night. Congratulations to the following finalists from St Matthew’s Collegiate:

Emma McLeod won the Youth Sportswoman of the Year. Emma represented New Zealand at the U19 Cricket World Cup Tournament in South Africa. Emma then went on to win the Supreme Champion Award - this is the first time a winner of a Youth Award has done this.
Special Character
The Trinity Schools Trust Board undertook a very specific piece of work in 2022, we asked ourselves what it means to be Anglican Schools and what Special Character looks like worked out in each of our unique but diverse spaces. Students, staff, chaplains, principals, and each board were invited to contribute. Together we have come up with a Trinity model for each of our schools to utilise, in order to uphold our Christian tradition in a unified way.
- As you can see from the model, we look up, Tuia ki te rangi; how do we unite with God who is unchanging?
- We look in, tuia ki roto; how are we working together as one body for the best of our students and our schools?
- We look out, Tuia ke te hapori whanui; how do we unite with our communities?
In the foreseeable future, together as a community, we will work this model out. We hope to ensure that we hold well to our Kaupapa, bringing our schools together and holding firm to the Christian traditions that have held us so well for these many years. From St Matthew’s Collegiate’s perspective, as part of the Trinity, Special Character is where we Look up, Look in, and Look out – we do this by Telling, Teaching, Tending, Treasuring, and Transforming with Compassion, Inclusivity, Respect, Integrity, and Commitment.
Year 7 / 8 Speech Finals
On Wednesday our Year 7 / 8 school finalists competed in the Masterton competition. This competition was to find the speakers to go through to the Wairarapa Finals. Charlotte Johnson competed in the Year 7 section with her speech on “Vegetables”. Although a very interesting hilarious speech she was unplaced. Zena Cole competed in the Year 8 group with her speech on “ChatGPT” and was placed second. Zena will now compete in the Wairarapa Finals on Tuesday 20 June at Greytown School. We wish Zena the best of luck for the next part of her public speaking journey.
Dunce Cup
Always a highlight of the hockey season is the annual battle for the Dunce Cup between St Matthew's Collegiate and Wairarapa College, a game that is always played with incredible spirit and camaradarie. Both teams put in a huge effort, with our 1st XI girls coming out on top 3-0. Well done to all involved.
Staff vs Student Volleyball
Staff vs Student Volleyball was held yesterday at lunchtime. Batten were the overall winners beating the staff in the final (easily). There was plenty of fun and laughs had.
