Star Board Term One Week Five

Principal's Message

Kia Ora Koutou

I want to start with a repeated thank you. A call went out for volunteers to help as readers and writers and we were grateful for the response.

On behalf of our SENCO Rachel McKay – thank you.

Are you and your whānau protected from measles?

We are checking our Immunisation register. If you are unsure if you or your children have had any or both doses of the MMR vaccine, check by calling your GP or hauora provider. Alternatively, check your Plunket Well Child Tamariki Ora book.

There are no safety concerns with having an extra dose. MMR vaccines are free at your local health provider and many pharmacies.

As measles still occurs in many countries, if you are travelling overseas these holidays it is worth checking this out.

PPTA partial and full day strike

On 30 January NZSTA advised that the PPTA has issued a notice of partial strike action between now and Thursday 6 April.

The partial strike is undertaken by PPTA member teachers employed under the Secondary Teachers’ and Area School Teachers’ Collective Agreements.

During the strike PPTA members will remain working at the school but will not:

  • undertake internal relief cover during their timetabled non-contact time or
  • provide teaching to a normally scheduled class if additional students from other classes are added to that class because a reliever cannot be provided, however they will provide supervision to that class.

Upcoming full day strike

The PPTA are planning a full day strike on Thursday 16 March of PPTA members covered by the Secondary Teachers’ and Area School Teachers’ Collective Agreements.

On this day there will be no formal instruction.

If you are able to keep your children at home please do so. The school will be open for those families unable to keep children at home and supervision will be provided.

The Boarding house will remain open for boarders.

School will be as normal on Friday 17th March.

Uniform Shop- Position available

Our Uniform Shop manager is soon to retire from this role so we are seeking a replacement. We are after a personable soul who might be looking to make a change of direction. Our current manager Juliet is happy to give on the job training before she departs.

If this sounds like you please send a letter of application to tracey.watt@trinityschools.nz .

As I pen this, I have my eye on the Discus and Javelin. We were compelled to move our Athletics to our postponement day, and it is all going well.

Have a safe weekend.

Boarding Note

Wednesday night was action packed in boarding this week. Many girls were either down at the gym for hockey preseason training; off to cricket at Lakeview ; or heading to Carterton School to play twilight netball. Congratulations to the following players who are boarders from Years 9-11 who won our first twilight netball match! Great effort girls.

(Left to right)- Sal (Umpire), with Maggie, Jorja, Zoe, Maia, Amelia, Rose, Annabelle, Charlotte and Mia.

After netball, the girls leapt in the minibus to get back in time for the boarders Big Splash Competition. Many thanks to Miss McCoy, Mrs Fair, and Hope Eales (our Boarding Prefect) for running the competition, and to our lifesavers Emma Lui, and Hannah Fountain. Here are a few photos from the night.

Please note that next week on Tuesday 7th March all boarders 16 years and over will complete the Census at school in prep time.

Enjoy the exeat weekend with your girls.

DAGATW dresses in Fiji

These dresses were recently distributed to girls in Fiji. How amazing is it to see these dresses made by our students (and Mrs Bucknell) being worn and the huge smiles that they have brought to the faces of these gorgeous girls.

The two orange dresses were made by Mrs. Bucknell and the girls are holding other dresses made by St Matthew’s students.
This dress was made last year by Maddison McKenzie
This is a creation of Penny Noble’s that was made in 2021 and donated in 2022

Aleksandra Domanski and Ruby Matthews

Ruby and Allie are currently competing for the Wellington team at the 2023 Jennian Homes National Athletic Championships. Yesterday Allie’s 4 x 100m Relay team were second, and Ruby ran a personal best in 300m Hurdles. Allie also competed in long jump with steady progress from her last few meets. We wish Allie the best for her 100m races today as well as Triple Jump on Saturday.

Kotahitanga - River Walks

We were pleased the sun was shining this week so we could explore our beautiful Waingawa river during Kotahitanga. Even managed to find a few blackberries, YUM!

SMOSLs action

On Tuesday lunchtime SMOSLs Sophie Williams and Sally Booth ran games for our junior girls at lunchtime. They had great fun with fat mat rounders.

Fashionistas in the making

Some of our Year 7 girls were inspired by Allison MacKay's WOW talk on Wednesday and popped into the soft material's room during lunch time to drape their creations; what very talented student’s – super exciting for the future!

Athletic Sports

What a stunning day to have our Athletic sports after having to postpone them from last Friday. Well done to all of the participants, organisers and supporters who made it such a great day.

Friends of St Matthew's AGM

The Friends of St Matthew's Committee will be holding its AGM on Tuesday 7 March at 6.30pm. The meeting will be held in the Boardroom.

We welcome all and any parents, caregivers and friends of the school to join our committee and help us with fundraising activities throughout the year. We work hard but we also have a lot of fun!

The Friends' committee meets monthly and our meetings are relaxed, informal gatherings where we share ideas and organise ways we can support events to help the school.

Anyone is warmly invited to attend the AGM and join us on the 'Friends'. If you'd like more information, please email sm.friends@trinityschools.nz

Students wanting to come must be accompanied by an adult, within a family, one adult can accompany more than one student. This is an opportunity of a lifetime, so please seriously consider taking up this offer! For more information, see the flyer near the bottom of this newsletter and make contact with Pastor Wendy.
