Hello, my name is Emily. I'm a 16 year old who has lived in Colorado since 2010, and moved to Colorado city in 2020. In my free time I love snowboarding, playing guitar, and eating food. Photography has been fun because I learned a lot about taking more than a "snapshot." Thinking about the angle and composition, making photos a lot more appealing to look at.
Pet photos
My dog Skye has a lot of personality, and I thought that it was important to capture that in the photo that I took of her for this assignment. I wanted to capture her unrelenting desire for attention as well as her I-have-to-much-energy look in her eyes. I wanted to make sure that she was the main subject and that everything else in the background was blurred, so you could take in every single detail of her.
Conceptual self-portrait
This photo was taken for conceptual self portraits, and I was honestly just looking for an excuse to take a picture of a candle, and so i seized the moment. I wanted the candle to be the only thing that you could see, being a light in the dark. I tried to use a real candle but my camera is low quality so I had to use a fake candle, something that wouldn't move. I am pleased that it turned out in the way that it is the only thing you can see in the dark, adding an ominous look.
Homecoming photos
It was no secret that the homecoming game was freezing, and that presented the perfect oppurtunity to take this picture. It looks very creepy in a way, and I wanted to make sure to get it when there was no one on the field. All you can see is one person with the purple umbrella and the fog and cold highlighted by the huge floodlights. It adds to the post-apocalyptic look.
lighting
Flower pictures are always a good idea, so when I saw these flowers, I couldn't pass up the chance. I love how the river is flowing and sparkling behind the vibrant purple flowers. I wanted the flowers to be the main subject but the rest still visible.
Composition photos
This photo was taken when I was first starting out in photography, so I wasn't really paying attention to photography elements, I just wanted to find something that looked good. I saw the fine on the fence and thought that if I took the photo at an angle, then it would highlight the green against the steel color of the fence. It worked.
Aaron Siskand
I'm not sure why I took this photo in the first place, but I thought that it would turn out cool once I took it through the curtain. I wanted the sun to shine through the thin black curtain, like a big ball of light that isn't overwhelming. I liked how the light almost "melted" down from the actual sun through the curtain.
Zoo photos
At first I couldn't see the lizard when we were at the zoo, although given the colors it does not exactly blend in. Once I did see it though, I thought that it's vibrant colors would make a great picture. I wanted to capture the lizard in particular, which worked out because you can see all of its scales and colors, even if the picture isn't right up to it.
Texture
I thought that everything about this simple post that is covered in random metal objects...was just cool to look at. I wanted to capture every single nail and staple while still highlighting the color and grain in the wood. It turned out really good, because you see all of the details, and the glare of the sun blocked out the background and any other distractions.
grand landscape
I took this picture when I was on a hike with my family, and I wanted to capture every single detail that there was. We were positioned in an area where it almost looked like there was valley below us, so the small details managed to stick out, ecspecially given the fact that a lot of them were brighter and darker colors, so they contrasted from each other. In the end, was able to capture the landscape in full.
composition
I thought it would be cool for the leaves of this tree to stick out part of the way from the right, but I didn't want it to be the only thing taking up the picture. I positioned the camera to where it would capture the leaves, and even highlight some of them with more of a neon/pale color than the rest of them. The bright blue sky sprinkled with clouds also highlighted the tree. In the end I was happy with this picture and accomplished my goal.
Toy pictures
This picture was really fun, because I was able to climb up to the top of the announcers box, and even though I almost slipped and died, I had a good time setting this picture up. I wanted the knight to be the only thing that stuck out. His armor was gold so that worked out, given the fact that everything in the background is silver or white. I got to give him a heroic look, like he was staring death in the face.
composition photos
The coolest thing about this picture is that the words are burned into the wood, and I tried to take the picture at an angle to where you can see the depth of them. I also liked how the background, was split. On the left it was green, and on the right it was blue.
Toy photos
Along with the knight picture, I wanted to give the toy photo a heroic look, like he was riding into war, but he doesn't have his commrades. I put him in the snow to give him more of a look of having a difficult time though. I wanted to makes sure he was in front of the rocks, that way it appeared that he was in a battle somewhere foreign.
conceptual self-portrait
i stumbled upon the shattered tree behind the football field, and felt that it could represent impulsiveness. You can see every splinter and broken piece of wood. The contrasting colors of the wood also adds an effect of being damaged.
lighting
I took this picture before I came to school one morning, and the colors were not something that I could pass up. The thing I wanted to capture the most, was the colors that the sun painted on the clouds and ground. The rocks on the ground are blue, so that highlights against the dull, pale, concrete. The orange also shines through the tree, and every single color sticks out
Progress and favorite assignment
I have to say that my favorite assignment this semester was the toy pictures. I would say that this was my favorite because I was able to arrange the picture how I wanted. I chose toys that I could make into a funny or "dangerous" way. I was able to make the colors contrast and everything like that. I have also progressed in this class in two main ways. I pay more attention to the angle and color of a picture. The angle ecspecially makes me pay more attention now. I have enjoyed this class and hope to carry what I have learned when I am taking pictures in the future.
