Nakara Preschool Offering Full Days in 2024
This message is for all families who may have a child entering Nakara Preschool in 2024, or who know someone who is thinking of enrolling their child at Nakara Preschool.
2024 will see a change to the way Preschool at Nakara Primary operates.
Currently the Preschool runs 2 morning groups and 1 afternoon group where the children come for 3 hours, 5 days a week.
This gives them the 15hrs a week of Preschool instruction mandated by the Department of Education.
There is a great deal of research which indicates that this is not the ideal format to provide the best learning outcomes for Preschool students.
To provide optimum learning for the children, attending for full days is considered best.
This is the format used by most, if not all, Preschools in Darwin.
From the beginning of Term 1, 2024, Nakara Primary school will use the following format (this may change slightly due to numbers attending):
Rick Collister- Assistant Principal
Welcome Back Lauren Erichsen

Mars Marvellous Market
Thank you to everyone who helped-out and supported the Mars Marvellous Market today. It was a huge success, raising around $900 to go towards our excursion and art supplies.

Track and Field
Last Thursday a team of 26 students travelled to Arafura Stadium to compete in the Darwin Region Track and Field Carnival. All our students put in some amazing performances and did their school proud. Mitchell (pictured below) broke the 800m record for the U10 boys. A huge effort the day after returning form Year 4 camp! Nakara Primary School were crowned Track and Field champions at the end of the carnival.

"Wild At Art" Threatened Species Art Competition
Wild At Art is Australia's biggest wildlife art competition for kids.
It's an opportunity for children unleash their artistic creativity while learning about Australia's threatened animals and plants – and the threats facing them.
Wild At Art Competition Details
About the competition
Wild At Art is Australia’s biggest wildlife art competition for children aged 5-12. Right up until Threatened Species Day on Thursday 7 September, children from across the country are invited to create an original artwork of one of Australia's many threatened native animals or plants, along with a short written component on their chosen threatened species.
It’s a fantastic opportunity for primary school children to unleash their artistic creativity while learning about Australia's threatened animals and plants – and the threats facing them.
ARE THE KIDS OK?
Parents of kids ages 6-17yrs are invited to participate in the online Australian Kids’ Mental Health & Wellbeing Services Study. Parents from culturally and linguistically diverse families are especially encouraged to participate.
Many parents don’t feel confident they could recognise if their child needed external help to cope with the stresses of childhood, realise their abilities, learn what they need to, and contribute to their community.
Undiagnosed and untreated childhood mental health issues can lead to preventable health and mental issues that persist into adulthood, disruptions in education and employment in adulthood, family and relationship breakdowns, stigma, lost opportunities and loss of life satisfaction. Yet many Australian children and teenagers do not access the mental health and wellbeing services they need.
Parents are invited to participate in this anonymous online survey (~45 minutes; the kids are worth it!) asking about their experiences, knowledge, beliefs and opinions of child mental health and wellbeing, and associated services.
The study aims to:
1: Explore how stoicism, emotional self-control, child mental health literacy, and immigration experiences of parents, affect kids engaging with child mental health services; and
2: Identify ways to get kids the mental health and wellbeing services they need, including helping them manage difficult emotions with less shame or stigma.
After participating, parents will be taken to a free online child mental health checklist that can be used to proactively monitor child mental health, including receiving a score, an explanation of what it means and next steps to take.
Parents can participate and get more information here.
